Republicans Monetize Impeachment

December 17, 2019 · 7:59 am ET · Leave a Comment

Axios: “The Trump campaign and RNC combined took in more than $10m in small-dollar donations last week alone, as the House Judiciary Committee adopted two articles of impeachment, according to a campaign official.”

“In the 72 hours that followed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s initial September announcement that she would move forward with the impeachment inquiry, Republicans raised $15m.”

“Since the impeachment inquiry began, an official said, a quarter of Trump rally registrants are self-described Democrats or independents, and about the same proportion are low-propensity voters.”

Moderate Democrats Take a Leap on Impeachment

December 17, 2019 · 6:51 am ET · Leave a Comment

“A contingent of Democratic House members from Republican-leaning districts announced one by one Monday that after weeks of extraordinary pressure, they have decided to vote to impeach President Trump, as the House hurtles toward historic action later this week,” the Washington Post reports.

“Monday’s announcements dealt a blow to Trump and his allies, who had been encouraging Democrats to defect to bolster their depiction of impeachment as a crusade by extremist liberals.”

Playbook: “There are a few ways to look at this. If you take these lawmakers at their word, they are so disgusted with Trump’s behavior that they need to vote to remove him from office. It’s their duty. And perhaps so.”

“But Congress is a political institution, where even matters of conscience are judged for their political wisdom. First of all, take note that the announcements all came within hours of each other — a sign of unity among a group of vulnerable politicians. They’re leaping together.”

Americans Remain Split on Impeachment

December 17, 2019 · 6:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post-ABC News poll: “On the eve of the House vote, 49% of Americans say Trump should be impeached and removed from office, while 46% say he should not. Those are essentially identical to findings at the end of October, when 49% favored impeachment and removal and 47% opposed. The latest poll also finds that regardless of whether Trump committed an impeachable offense, 49% say he improperly pressured Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son, while 39% say Trump did not do this.”

Fate of Democratic Debate Hinges on Bargaining Session

December 17, 2019 · 6:44 am ET · Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “It’s not often that a small group of food-service workers can dream of exercising power over an American political party. But this week, Los Angeles is getting to see one of those moments.”

“A group of about 150 unionized workers at Loyola Marymount University are headed to a contract bargaining session Tuesday that could determine whether this week’s Democratic presidential debate will happen at the private university’s west side campus.”

A Very Swampy Spending Bill

December 17, 2019 · 6:37 am ET · Leave a Comment

Playbook: “The House is going to vote on a bill today to keep government funded through September 2020, and change a host of unrelated policies. The bill came out Monday. It will get a vote tonight. The number of issues handled in this bill is stunning. It contains major changes in health care policy, extends flood insurance, reauthorizes the Export-Import Bank for seven years, extends the terrorism insurance program and reauthorizes money to rebuild the Kennedy Center, and so much more.”

“And guess what: Late Monday night the House decided to pair a massive package of tax extenders with this bill.”

“Let’s put it this way: If you are a company or an entity with a legislative priority, and you couldn’t get it in this year-end package, call your lobbyist for a chat. Or better yet, look for a new one.”

The Wall Street Journal has more on what’s in the bill.

How Republicans Got a Democrat to Switch Parties

December 17, 2019 · 6:33 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), a key Trump ally, told the freshman from New Jersey that Trump would like to see him become a Republican,” Politico reports.

“Behind the scenes, former New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie spoke to Van Drew about switching parties, said GOP sources. Kellyanne Conway, a top White House adviser who hails from that district, also sought a meeting with the congressman on an unrelated issue, which Van Drew’s aides suspected was a pretense for her to lobby him to switch parties. The meeting never happened, but it was clear the White House was upping the pressure on Van Drew.”

Trump Will Spend Two Weeks at Mar-a-Lago

December 17, 2019 · 6:20 am ET · Leave a Comment

Palm Beach Post: “The president … is expected to spend at least two weeks at Mar-a-Lago with his family for the holidays. Trump made the announcement in a tweet on Dec. 12 in which he also referred to his private club as ‘The Southern White House.’

“The White House has not confirmed the dates of Trump’s trip. He is traveling to Battle Creek, Michigan, on Wednesday – the day the House is scheduled to vote on his impeachment. On Thursday, Democrats have a tentative plan to vote on the trade deal President Trump negotiated with Mexico and Canada to replace NAFTA – leaving Friday open for possible travel to Palm Beach. A Federal Aviation Advisory issued Monday suggests the president will arrive that day.”

Mueller Prosecutor Says Trump Committed Crimes

December 16, 2019 · 10:31 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Andrew Weissmann, one of former special counsel Robert Mueller‘s top lieutenants, writes for Just Security that President Trump has committed several federal crimes while in office.

“We are surely to learn more about the criminality underlying the impeachment inquiry. And whether or not you believe the current evidence meets the beyond a reasonable doubt standard, because it is clear what the President was up to, that new evidence is sure to be damning. Why else would the President be stonewalling its release? When that new evidence comes to light, Senators who have resisted impeachment now on the ground of lack of evidence may seek to cling to that legal argument, but will look darn foolish in the annals of history, when the documents prove up what we all already know to be true.”

Support for Impeachment Dips

A new CNN poll finds support for impeaching President Trump and removing him from office stands at 45% in the new poll, down from 50% in a poll conducted in mid-November.

Opposition to impeachment and removal stands at 47% in the new poll, up from 43% in November.

An Impeachment Alternative

December 16, 2019 · 8:13 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “If the process plays out as everyone believes it will, impeachment will end with an acquittal in the Senate, and the House’s efforts to protect the integrity of the 2020 election will have proved counterproductive: President Trump, claiming a ‘full exoneration,’ could be emboldened to engage in misconduct similar to or even worse than his interactions with Ukraine.”

“But there is a way out of this mess that would let the House impeach him—while allowing the Senate to only censure Trump, rather than having to vote to convict or acquit him. The House could express its disapproval of Trump through an impeachment vote, and the Senate, through censure rather than a trial, could embrace, even enhance, the House’s message. Yes, Trump would stay in office. But because both chambers of Congress would be on the record in officially condemning his conduct, there is a decent chance this approach might deter Trump from similar elections abuse.”

It Was All a Lie

A must-read out next year: It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump by Stuart Stevens.

“Stuart Stevens spent decades electing Republicans at every level, from presidents to senators to local officials. He knows the GOP as intimately as anyone in America, and in this new book he offers a devastating portrait of a party that has lost its moral and political compass.”

Louis Jacobson: “Not a single primary or caucus vote has been cast yet, but it’s never too early to take a look at the shape of the 2020 general election for president.”

“Below is a baseline assessment of the states’ likely preferences for November 2020, at least as they appear right now. The ratings are based on reporting with political observers in the states and a look at historical and demographic data.”

His ratings are nearly identical to my interactive Electoral Vote Map, which shows just five states as Toss Ups.

Beshear Reverses Bevin’s Plan to Overhaul Medicaid

December 16, 2019 · 5:39 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Gov. Andy Beshear (D) ended former Gov. Matt Bevin’s (R) quest to scale back Kentucky’s Medicaid program by requiring ‘able-bodied’ adults to report work hours and other changes critics said would cost up to 100,000 Kentuckians their health coverage,” the Louisville Courier Journal reports.

“By revoking Bevin’s plan, Beshear, fulfilled the last of three actions he pledged to take during his his first week in office to reverse actions of his Republican predecessor — reorganizing the state Education Board, restoring voting rights to some ex-offenders and abolishing the Medicaid plan Bevin rolled out in 2016.”

DNC Tries to Save This Week’s Debate

December 16, 2019 · 4:56 pm ET · Leave a Comment

DNC chairman Tom Perez spent over 20 hours on the phone this weekend trying to save Thursday’s debate from crumbling, Axios reports, after a labor dispute prompted the presidential candidates to threaten a boycott.

“The DNC already switched the venue once because of another labor dispute, and it would be nearly impossible to find a new location now. But internally, Democrats are hopeful a deal will be made today or tomorrow — and some DNC staffers are already heading to Los Angeles this afternoon.”
