Why Is John Bolton Staying Silent?

December 18, 2019 · 7:15 am ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “It’s possible that Bolton can confirm the Republican version, which is that Trump was keenly interested in fighting corruption in Ukraine and withheld the meeting and congressionally appropriated military funding to pressure its government to reform. Maybe Bolton heard Trump talk about Ukrainian corruption in private even though he never mentioned it publicly. Maybe he can explain why, in a crucial call with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Trump talked only about Biden and an absurd conspiracy theory related to the 2016 election. If so, then Bolton is allowing impeachment to go forward despite knowing it’s based on flawed information.”

“Of course, it’s also possible — indeed, more likely — that Bolton can confirm the Democrats’ version: that Trump didn’t care about corruption at all but was instead abusing his office to smear a political opponent. If so, not only is Bolton allowing a guilty president to get away with it, but he’s helping someone willing to sell out the nation for private gain to remain in office.”

“Either way, he’s doing the country a grave disservice by staying silent.”

Susan Collins Launches Re-Election Bid

It’s Impeachment Day

December 18, 2019 · 6:37 am ET · Leave a Comment

Playbook: “At 9 a.m., the House will gavel in, and soon thereafter, it will proceed to impeachment. The House first has to debate the ‘rule,’ which sets the guidelines for debate — we expect that procedural vote at some time in the 10 a.m. hour. The House will then move to six hours of debate on impeachment — a very long time compared with other legislative matters. That time is equally divided between the minority and majority. Watch out for Republicans to pull some procedural maneuvers, and ask for unrelated votes, which would elongate the process.”

“Impeachment needs a simple majority of those present and voting to pass. The House has four vacancies, so if everyone is present and voting, 216 is the magic number, not 218.”

“This is just a guess but it’s looking like it will be a late night. Votes could be in the 7-8 p.m. neighborhood — if not later. We can’t imagine they’ll allow themselves to vote too late, but there is the potential for a bizarre split-screen effect, with Democrats (and Justin Amash) voting to impeach the president while he whips up the crowd in Battle Creek, Mich.”

Who Helped Write Trump’s Letter to Pelosi?

December 17, 2019 · 10:10 pm ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Some of the president’s closest advisers were involved in drafting the letter, but they did not include Pat A. Cipollone, the White House counsel who will play a large role in a Senate trial.”

“Instead, Eric Ueland, the director of the Office of Legislative Affairs, led the process, with input from Stephen Miller, the president’s top policy adviser, who often scripts many of Mr. Trump’s public remarks. Michael Williams, an adviser to Mick Mulvaney, the president’s acting chief of staff, also weighed in, and Mr. Ueland’s draft was framed over the last few days.”

Schumer Says Trump Is ‘Under a Great Deal of Duress’

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer told CNN that President Trump’s scathing letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicates the president is “obviously under a great deal of duress” as he faces a House impeachment vote.

He added: “But if he thinks he can bully Nancy Pelosi into backing off, he’s with the wrong customer.”

The Purpose of a Political Party

December 17, 2019 · 7:59 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Freedland: “Well, guess what. Labour’s ‘radical’ manifesto of 2019 achieved precisely nothing. Not one proposal in it will be implemented, not one pound in it will be spent. It is worthless. And if judged not by the academic standard of ‘expanding the discourse,’ but by the hard, practical measure of improving actual people’s actual lives, those hate figures of Corbynism — Tony Blair and Gordon Brown — achieved more in four hours than Corbyn achieved in four years. Why? Because they did what it took to win power.”

“That’s what a political party is for. It’s not a hobby; it’s not a pressure group that exists to open the Overton window a little wider; it’s not an association for making friends or hosting stimulating conversations and seminars; it’s not ‘a 30-year project.’ Its purpose is to win and exercise power in the here and now. It is either a plausible vehicle for government or it is nothing.”

Buttigieg Omitted Top Bundlers from Disclosure

December 17, 2019 · 7:55 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign omitted more than 20 high-level fundraisers from a list of top ‘bundlers’ it disclosed to the public last week,” Politico reports.

“The public list of bundlers, featuring more than 100 people who have raised at least $25,000 for Buttigieg, was meant to bring a close to more than a week of feuding between Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren over campaign transparency. But the list left off a number of people the Buttigieg campaign had previously touted as top donors in an internal campaign fundraising report obtained by Politico.”

“President Trump intervened to cut the federal government’s Medicaid funding for Puerto Rico as part of a larger government spending deal,” Politico reports.

“The budget deal unveiled by lawmakers this week allocates up to $5.7 billion in Medicaid funds for the island over two years — instead of $12 billion over four years that Republican and Democratic leaders on two key congressional committees had endorsed after months of negotiating a long-term financial path for Puerto Rico.”

Van Drew Told Colleagues Trump Was Stupid

December 17, 2019 · 4:28 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“For months, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a freshman Democrat from New Jersey, has publicly trashed the impeachment process, calling it unfair, unfounded, and deeply damaging to the country—but privately, this soon-to-be Republican had a much different reasoning,” the Daily Beast reports.

“Behind closed doors, Van Drew has told colleagues that the president was stupid and mentally unstable—and that his opposition to impeachment stemmed from his belief that impeaching Trump would ensure his re-election.”

Trump Rips Impeachment In Letter to Pelosi

December 17, 2019 · 2:32 pm ET · Leave a Comment

President Trump wrote a fiery 6-page letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and assailed the Democratic Party over “the very ugly word of impeachment,” calling it an “illegal, partisan attempted coup.”

Said Trump: “More due process was afforded to those accused in the Salem Witch Trials.”

The letter appears to have been written by the president himself.

Jonathan Chait: “If a juror in Trump’s coming impeachment trial had no other evidence except this letter, it would provide ample grounds for impeachment. Trump openly denies the Congress’s constitutional prerogative, and makes plain his mental unfitness for the job.”
