‘Imagine What Bob Mueller Knows’

July 11, 2017 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “Top West Wing aides acknowledge that the three consecutive days of baffling, brutal disclosures about Donald Trump Jr.’s Russia meeting during the campaign is a story that will stick, with potentially momentous political and legal consequences.”

“A consequence of these stories is that no blanket denial of anything by this White House will be believable. So the President and his team can expect to be nibbled by ducks as long as they’re in office.”

“Thought for the day: If the New York Times knows all this, imagine what Bob Mueller knows.”

Rick Klein: “Look for scrutiny next on Kushner, the only one in the meeting who now holds a government job, and who did not disclose the encounter on government forms.”

Expect Congress to Work at Least Part of August

July 11, 2017 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There are 13 legislative days scheduled until the August recess. Obamacare repeal is in a tough spot. Congress is extremely unlikely to lift the debt ceiling before the August recess. And we can’t see any agreement on the horizon on tax reform.”

“Expect a growing chorus of voices to call for Congress to cancel all — or part — of August recess. Lots of people want to at least show that they will work through at least part of the five-week work period, especially if Republicans have no accomplishments to bring back to constituents. We have heard from GOP leaders that they expect to be in session for part of August — even if for show. Chalk up a partial victory here to the House Freedom Caucus, which was one of the first groups out of the gate to advocate for this.”

“Fresh off her spat with President Donald Trump, Mika Brzezinski has landed new a three-book deal with Weinstein Books, which published her 2011 book Knowing Your Value.”

“The ‘Morning Joe’ anchor has signed a deal with Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s publishing imprint said to be worth ‘in the high six figures,'” sources exclusively tell Page Six.

Trump Wanted Afghanistan Options from Contractors

July 11, 2017 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “President Trump’s advisers recruited two businessmen who profited from military contracting to devise alternatives to the Pentagon’s plan to send thousands of additional troops to Afghanistan, reflecting the Trump administration’s struggle to define its strategy for dealing with a war now 16 years old.”

“Erik D. Prince, a founder of the private security firm Blackwater Worldwide, and Stephen A. Feinberg, a billionaire financier who owns the giant military contractor DynCorp International, have developed proposals to rely on contractors instead of American troops in Afghanistan at the behest of Stephen K. Bannon, Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, and Jared Kushner, his senior adviser and son-in-law.”

Trump’s Trip to U.K. Will Be Delayed

July 11, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Financial Times: “Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK looks set to be postponed until next year, amid reports that the president wants to avoid a visit that could be marred by protests over his being offered the honour.”

Experts Say Trump Aides May Have Violated Campaign Laws

July 11, 2017 at 6:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Legal experts told ABC News that, based on news reports, it “warrants investigation” into whether Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort violated any laws.

These laws prohibit anyone from “soliciting” or “accepting” any campaign contribution from a foreign national or a foreign government.

Trump Son Was Told of Moscow Link

July 10, 2017 at 9:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy,” the New York Times reports.

“The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting… Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information.”

“It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign… But the email is likely to be of keen interest to the Justice Department and congressional investigators, who are examining whether any of President Trump’s associates colluded with the Russian government to disrupt last year’s election.”

Washington Post: “The revelations put the Trump administration again on the defensive about its relationship with Moscow, and they seemed to add to a pattern of not disclosing Kremlin contacts or providing false information about them.”

Trump Administration Cancels Plans for FBI Headquarters

July 10, 2017 at 6:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal government is canceling the search for a new FBI headquarters, according to officials familiar with the decision, putting a more than decade-long search by the bureau to move out of the crumbling J. Edgar Hoover Building back at square one,” the Washington Post reports.

“The decision follows years of largely failed attempts by the Obama and Trump administrations to convince Congress to fully back a plan for a campus in the Washington suburbs paid for by trading away the Hoover Building to a real estate developer and putting up nearly $2 billion in taxpayer funds to cover the remaining cost.”

Perlmutter Drops Race for Colorado Governor

July 10, 2017 at 6:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) plans to announce that he will end his run for Colorado governor, just three months after he started it, the Denver Post reports.

“The surprise decision by the sixth-term lawmaker comes a few weeks after another Colorado Democrat, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis of Boulder, said he would join the race. The entry of Polis put substantial pressure on Perlmutter — as Polis could pour a substantial amount of his personal wealth into his campaign while Perlmutter would have to compete for campaign funds with several other well-connected Democrats.”

Meadows Threatens Shutdown Over Border Wall

July 10, 2017 at 5:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC) told Brietbart that the federal spending bill — which needs to be passed by the end of September — must fund the construction of President Trump’s border wall or else there will be a government shutdown.

He also claims Trump backs his position: “My conversations with the President have led me to believe that there is nothing less than a full and total commitment on his part to only sign into law a funding bill that actually allows for us to start construction of a border wall on our southern border. He’s committed to do that. We’re committed to supporting him in that position.”

Federal Prosecutors Step Up Probe of Sanders’s Wife

July 10, 2017 at 4:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal investigation into a land deal led by Jane Sanders, the wife and political adviser of Sen. Bernie Sanders, has accelerated in recent months — with prosecutors hauling off more than a dozen boxes of records from the Vermont college she once ran and calling a state official to testify before a grand jury,” the Washington Post reports.

“A half-dozen people said in interviews in recent days that they had been contacted by the FBI or federal prosecutors, and former college trustees told The Washington Post that lawyers representing Jane Sanders had interviewed them to learn what potential witnesses might tell the government.”

Quote of the Day

July 10, 2017 at 2:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Now we see overnight that there was a meeting between Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort and a very — somebody close, very close to the FSB and Putin. So drip, drip, drip, drip. This is a criminal enterprise running this country right now.”

— Former DNC Chairman Howard Dean, quoted by The Hill.

Health Bill Would Crush Senate Republicans

July 10, 2017 at 2:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Global Strategy Group/Garin Hart Yang poll finds that Senate Republican candidates take an approximately 30-point hit when voters learn they’re supporting their party’s bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

“The poll found that, in a vacuum, voters in 10 battleground states are split almost evenly about Republican senate candidates — with 21% of voters viewing them favorably and 20% viewing them unfavorably. But when told their Republican senate candidates supported the GOP’s health care bill, voters turned sharply against their representatives. In that case, the candidates’ unfavorability rating jumps from 21% to 52%.”

Key finding: “After hearing criticisms of the Republican plan, voters in these Senate battlegrounds went from leaning toward voting the Democrat in 2018 by a healthy 48 to 38 margin, to leaning toward the Democrat by an even more robust 56 to 35 margin — an 11-point jump.”

Senate GOP Aims to Release New Health Bill This Week

July 10, 2017 at 2:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans are hoping to unveil a revamped draft of their legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare by the end of this week, though there are major questions about how it will address roiling GOP disagreement over a proposal touted by conservative senators,” Politico reports.

“New bill text could be unveiled to senators as soon as Thursday… A Congressional Budget Office score is likely to follow as soon as next Monday; a vote could come by the end of next week.”

Christie Approval Hits Another New Low

July 10, 2017 at 1:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Monmouth poll finds just 15% of New Jersey adults approve of the job Chris Christie (R) is doing as governor while 80% disapprove.

Said pollster Patrick Murray: “It really is difficult to drive approval ratings into the single digits barring something like a criminal conviction. However, you have to admire Christie’s seeming tenacity for trying to get his numbers down to that level.”
