Bannon Will Test Populist Message in 2018

February 2, 2017 at 12:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Well before President Trump’s inauguration, his top adviser Steve Bannon met with a few top-tier donors — the kind of donors capable of writing million-dollar checks,” BuzzFeed reports.

“The message, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversations, was that Bannon wants to use the 2018 midterm elections as the arena to test the political clout of Trump’s populist message.”

“The former chairman of far-right news website Breitbart was light on specifics and didn’t say which 2018 Senate races he had in mind… But he encouraged donors to starting giving to the outside entity created by Trump allies that was still taking shape at the time.”

Why Trump Has a Strong Grip on His Party

It’s fascinating — but completely understandable — why so many Republicans are falling in line behind Donald Trump. Many Republicans are wary of Trump backing a primary challenger if they cross him.

Trump Vows to Lift Ban on Church Political Activity

February 2, 2017 at 11:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “vowed to overturn a law restricting political speech by tax-exempt churches, a potentially huge victory for the religious right and a gesture to his political base,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump said his administration would ‘totally destroy’ the Johnson Amendment, which prohibits churches from engaging in political activity at the risk of losing their tax-exempt status.”

Is McConnell Willing to Kill the Filibuster?

February 2, 2017 at 11:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “This is an incredibly delicate moment in the Capitol. Republicans who are wise, including Mitch McConnell, do not want to invoke the nuclear option. Smart conservatives understand that changing the rules of the Senate to allow for a simple majority to confirm Trump’s Supreme Court nominee would set a disastrous precedent, which would invariably be used to put hyper-liberal justices onto the high court in future years. Even talking about going this route poisons the well and makes it that much harder to woo the eight moderate Democrats needed to clear the current 60-vote threshold.”

No Sign of Melania

February 2, 2017 at 9:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump and his wife, Melania, have not been seen together in public since the inauguration nearly two weeks ago – indeed, there are doubts the two have been together in private since then — reviving speculation about the first lady’s role,” RealClearPolitics reports.

“There were no public sightings of Melania Trump at the White House last weekend – although a pool report noted an Ivanka Trump appearance then in the West Wing.  White House staff didn’t respond to repeated inquiries from RealClearPolitics as to when the couple were last together.”

Democrats Plot Protest for Trump’s Speech to Congress

February 2, 2017 at 8:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are rallying behind a plan to make President Trump’s first speech to Congress as uncomfortable as possible by inviting guests they say will suffer under new White House policies,” The Hill reports.

“The strategy means Trump will likely face a crowd including ethnic minorities, LGBT people, undocumented immigrants, the disabled and others when he addresses a joint session on Feb. 28.”

The Great Manipulator

February 2, 2017 at 8:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Rogin: “If the first two weeks of the Trump presidency has shown anything, it’s that chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon has outmaneuvered his White House rivals, Cabinet secretaries and even Republican leaders in Congress. But Bannon is just getting started; he’s got a longer-term strategy to dominate White House policy making for months and years.”

Time: “There is only one President at a time, and Donald Trump is not one to cede authority. But in the early days at 1600 Pennsylvania, the portly and rumpled Bannon (the only male aide who dared to visit Trump’s office without a suit and tie) has the tools to become as influential as any staffer in memory. Colleagues have dubbed him ‘the Encyclopedia’ for the range of information he carries in his head; but more than any of that, Bannon has a mind-meld with Trump.”

“They share the experience of being talkative and brash, pugnacious money magnets who never quite fit among the elite. A Democrat by heritage and Republican by choice, Bannon has come to see both parties as deeply corrupt, a belief that has shaped his recent career as a polemical filmmaker and Internet bomb thrower. A party guest recalled meeting him as a private citizen and Bannon telling him that he was like Lenin, eager to ‘bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s Establishment.'”

Democrats Hiring Operatives In 20 GOP-Held Districts

February 2, 2017 at 8:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are moving urgently to harness the wave of grass-roots protests that have greeted President Trump in his first weeks in office to reclaim the House majority in next year’s midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

“As of this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is hiring full-time operatives to do political organizing work in 20 key Republican-held districts — an unusually early investment in House races that do not even have declared candidates yet.”

Trump Ordered Raid Without Adequate Preparation

February 2, 2017 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. military officials told Reuters that President Trump “approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.”

“As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.”

New York Times: “As it turned out, almost everything that could go wrong did. And on Wednesday, Mr. Trump flew to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be present as the body of the American commando killed in the raid was returned home, the first military death on the new commander in chief’s watch.”

“There are allegations — which the Pentagon acknowledged on Wednesday night are most likely correct — that the mission also killed several civilians, including some children.”

Quote of the Day

February 2, 2017 at 6:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I have spoken more with Donald Trump in the last month more than I have spoken with Barack Obama in the last eight years.”

Trump Companies Made $12.8 Million from Campaign

February 2, 2017 at 5:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s campaign paid his companies $12.8 million from the time he launched his improbable presidential bid in the lobby of his company’s flagship Trump Tower property through the end of last year,” Politico reports.

Trump Threatened to Send Troops to Mexico

February 1, 2017 at 10:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump threatened in a phone call with his Mexican counterpart to send U.S. troops to stop “bad hombres down there” unless the Mexican military does more to control them, according to a transcript of the conversation obtained by the Associated Press.

Said Trump: “You aren’t doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn’t, so I just might send them down to take care of it.”

Trump was also quoted by Aristegui Noticias saying: “I don’t need the Mexicans. I don’t need Mexico. We are going to build the wall and you all are going to pay for it, like it or not.”

Trump Takes Hair Growth Drug

February 1, 2017 at 9:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s personal doctor told the New York Times that the commander-in-chief takes a drug to stimulate hair growth.

“The disclosure that Mr. Trump uses a prostate-related drug to maintain growth of his scalp hair, which has not been publicly known, appears to solve a riddle of why Mr. Trump has a very low level of prostate specific antigen, or PSA, a marker for prostate cancer. Mr. Trump takes a small dose of the drug, finasteride, which lowers PSA levels. Finasteride is marketed as Propecia to treat male-pattern baldness.”

Inside a Train Wreck Call with Australia’s Leader

February 1, 2017 at 9:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It should have been one of the most congenial calls for the new commander in chief — a conversation with the leader of Australia, one of America’s staunchest allies, at the end of a triumphant week,” the Washington Post reports.

“Instead, President Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement and boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win, according to senior U.S. officials briefed on the Saturday exchange. Then, 25 minutes into what was expected to be an hour-long call, Trump abruptly ended it.”

“At one point Trump informed Turnbull that he had spoken with four other world leaders that day — including Russian President Vladimir Putin — and that ‘This was the worst call by far.'”

White House Puts Iran ‘on Notice’

February 1, 2017 at 9:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Security Adviser Michael Flynn said that President Donald Trump’s administration is “officially putting Iran on notice,” and senior administration officials later refused to rule out military action against the Islamic Republic, Politico reports.

Senior administration officials said Iran’s “highly provocative” behavior, including a recent missile test, “is a destabilizing factor in the region” and promised a response. The administration is considering “a large number of options” to address Iran, but refused to say whether military action is among them.

Tillerson Confirmed as Secretary of State

February 1, 2017 at 5:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The U.S. Senate confirmed Rex Tillerson as President Trump’s secretary of state, “filling a key spot on the Republican’s national security team despite concerns about the former Exxon Mobil Corp chief executive officer’s ties to Russia,” Reuters reports.

“In the vote, 56 senators backed Tillerson, and 43 voted no. The tally was largely along party lines, with every Republican favoring Tillerson, along with four members of the Democratic caucus, Senators Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Manchin and Mark Warner as well as Angus King, an independent.”

Quote of the Day

February 1, 2017 at 4:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I have to tell you that in all of my life there was always a grace period, right? New president’s coming in. I think they call it a honeymoon, right, where the media, like the others, gives the new administration a chance to come in and start to do what they do. And boy, if there was a honeymoon, it was pretty short. I sure don’t remember that.”

— Vice President Mike Pence, quoted by Politico.
