Sandoval Blasts Latest GOP Health Care Bill

September 22, 2017 at 6:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) said that the flexibility fellow Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) promised will be good for Nevada in a health-care bill he’s sponsoring is a “false choice” because the legislation will also slash funding, the Nevada Independent reports.

Sandoval said he would not “pit seniors, children, families, the mentally ill, the critically ill, hospitals, care providers or any other Nevadan against each other” because of the steep cuts to federal funding the state would face if the Heller-sponsored measure were to pass.

Nevada Just Passed a Public Health Insurance Option

June 6, 2017 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nevada, with little fanfare or notice, is inching toward a massive health insurance expansion — one that would give the state’s 2.8 million residents access to a public health insurance option,” Vox reports.

“The Nevada legislature passed a bill Friday that would allow anyone to buy into Medicaid, the public program that covers low-income Americans. It would be the first state to open the government-run program to all Nevada residents, regardless of their income or health status.”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) did not respond to an inquiry about whether he would sign the bill or veto it.

Sandoval Takes Name Off List for Supreme Court

February 25, 2016 at 2:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 79 Comments

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced that he’s declining a possible nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reno Gazette Journal reports.

Said Sandoval: “Earlier today, I notified the White House that I do not wish to be considered at this time for possible nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States. I have also spoken to Senators Reid, Heller and McConnell and expressed the same desire to them. The notion of being considered for a seat on the highest court in the land is beyond humbling and I am incredibly grateful to have been mentioned.”

White House Looking at Sandoval for Supreme Court

February 24, 2016 at 2:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 366 Comments

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) is being vetted by the White House for a possible nomination to the Supreme Court, the Washington Post reports.

“Sandoval is increasingly viewed by some key Democrats as perhaps the only nominee President Obama could select who would be able to break a Republican blockade in the Senate.”

Jon Ralston: “Sandoval is very well qualified — former federal judge, attorney general, eminently capable. But can a pro-choice, tax-raising, Medicaid-expanding governor get through the U.S. Senate? Would be fun to see that spectacle, no?”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) announced that he will not run for Harry Reid’s U.S. Senate seat, the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.

“Sandoval has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Bush said in a recent trip to Reno that it is much too soon to talk about potential running mates. Bush has not yet formally declared himself to be a candidate for president.”

Sandoval Confounds Many Republicans

April 21, 2015 at 6:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

“In a Republican Party hoping to woo Hispanic voters in 2016, few can claim the résumé of Gov. Brian Sandoval. He is the state’s first Latino governor and the national GOP’s ideal candidate to run for the U.S. Senate seat Harry Reid plans to vacate that year,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But Mr. Sandoval has upended GOP politics, declining to say whether he’ll run for the Senate and pushing for the largest tax increase in Nevada history. His tax-increase proposal has divided GOP state legislators here during a biennial session.”

GOP Effort to Oust Reid Rides on Sandoval Decision

February 4, 2015 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

“Senate Republicans are unlikely to land their most formidable recruit to take down Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), The Hill reports.

“With Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) delaying any decision until summer, his indecision is costing Republicans precious time in their quest to oust the party’s biggest target in 2016. The popular governor is at the top of wish lists for Nevada and Washington Republicans, but he has suggested he won’t run. Still, Sandoval is unlikely to make a final announcement until after the state’s legislative session concludes.”
