Shalala Lags In Race Democrats Had Locked

October 11, 2018 at 7:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Mason-Dixon poll in Florida’s 27th congressional district finds Maria Elvira Salazar (R) edging Donna Shalala (D) by two points, 44% to 42% with 13% undecided.

Politico: “The big factor: Hispanics, who account for 57 percent of the voters and who came to know Salazar relatively well over her three decades broadcasting on Spanish language networks Telemundo, Univision, Mega-TV and CNN Español.”

Also important: “Shalala doesn’t speak Spanish, and Democrats have faulted her campaign for months for being so slow-footed that it was in ‘sleep mode.’”

Shalala Can’t Put Away Her Opponent

September 19, 2018 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The congressional seat was supposed to be the easiest of Democratic pickups. Hillary Clinton carried the Miami-based 27th District by nearly 20 percentage points just two years ago. Donna Shalala, the Democratic nominee, was a well-known, former Cabinet secretary with a talent for raising money,” Politico reports.

“But now local Democrats are dismayed as Shalala is struggling to put away her Republican rival, a popular former Spanish-language television newswoman named Maria Elvira Salazar.”

”According to internal polls from both campaigns obtained by Politico, Salazar is either ahead — or just narrowly trailing — Shalala.”

The Miami Herald endorsed Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera (R), who is running for Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s (R-FL) seat in the Republican primary, while calling her “a strong candidate in the race with plausible conservative ideas,” The Hill reports.

Rodriguez Aguilera said in a 2009 television interview that she boarded a spaceship occupied by aliens when she was 7 years old.

Democrats Now Favored to Pick Up Florida Seat

May 1, 2017 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s (R-FL) retirement “vaults her Miami district to the very top of Democrats’ takeover list,” according to the Cook Political Report.

“Over 27 years in the House, Ros-Lehtinen’s reputation as firmly anti-Castro but strongly pro-gay rights made her highly popular back home, even as FL-27 trended away from the national GOP. Now Democrats will be favored to win the district, where President Trump lost by 20 points.”
