Gillibrand Won’t Say If Cuomo Should Resign

March 10, 2021 at 12:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) continued to urge for an investigation to be concluded before making any decision on whether Gov. Andrew Cuomo should stay in office amid sexual harassment allegations, USA Today reports.

“And the Democratic senator, who was the first to call for Sen. Al Franken’s resignation in 2017 amid sexual harassment claims, said she resents the fact that women in leadership have to be asked every day about whether someone in hot water should resign.”

Said Gillibrand: “Asking every female elected in our state when a person should resign or not resign really isn’t the conversation we should be having.”

Gillibrand Drops Out of Presidential Race

August 28, 2019 at 5:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), “said that she was withdrawing from the Democratic primary after failing to qualify for a third debate next month — a development she described as fatal to her candidacy,” the New York Times reports.

“Ms. Gillibrand said in an interview that she would endorse another candidate in the primary but had not yet picked a favorite. Though she stopped short of saying she would endorse a woman, Ms. Gillibrand, who has made electing women to Congress a personal cause, said the next president had to be capable of uniting the country and suggested that a woman might be best suited for the job.”

But she added: “I will support whoever the nominee is, and I will do whatever it takes to beat Trump.”

Gillibrand Has No Regrets Pushing Franken Out

July 23, 2019 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said that she had no regrets about calling for then-Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) to resign over sexual misconduct allegations, NBC News reports.

“Her quotes followed a New Yorker story in which seven current or former Democratic senators expressed regret for calling on him to resign in 2017. Gillibrand was the first senator to come forward.”

The Ignoring of Kirsten Gillibrand

July 9, 2019 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The majority of Democratic hopefuls have yet to experience a moment like the surge of interest in Mayor Pete or Beto or Elizabeth Warren, let alone the preexisting support afforded the two candidates approaching their 80th birthdays. But Gillibrand’s lack of anointing seems conspicuous. After all, on paper, she’s set herself up to succeed.”

“Maybe it’s that her recalibration on guns and immigration is often framed as pandering. Maybe it’s because her role in Al Franken’s Senate resignation has been cast as inconvenient for Democrats and convenient for her. Maybe it’s sexism.”

“Or maybe it’s all these things, with one other factor thrown in: At a time when our national cortisol level is tied to the president’s Twitter feed, and when candidates are live-streaming and clapping back and eating salads with hair equipment, it has become unforgivable to be boring… Gillibrand’s brand — motherly, responsible, pragmatic, experienced — is going to be a tough sell if what we really want, at some level, is for our politicians to entertain us.”

Gillibrand’s Campaign Not Going According to Plan

June 17, 2019 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “People working with her campaign acknowledge that she clearly underestimated how much her being out front in calling for Al Franken to resign from the Senate was going to haunt her—even though that was a year and a half ago, and despite the fact that all the other senators in the race called for him to go too. Among primary voters and partisan media outlets that put a premium on purity, no one is letting go of her past pro-gun or anti-immigrant positions.”

“The media spotlight she gets in New York and Washington only makes it more shocking when insiders in those cities realize she’s largely unknown to almost everyone else.”

NRA Fires Back at Gillibrand

June 3, 2019 at 1:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The National Rifle Association slammed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who has yet to meet DNC’s new qualifications for later debates, suggesting she will “say anything” to get on the debate stage.

From the NRA tweet: “Gillibrand called us the worst org in the country, but when she represented NY20, she wrote us: ‘I appreciate the work that the NRA does to protect gun owners rights, and I look forward to working with you for many years.’ Now that she’s looking to crack 1%, she’ll say anything.”

Gillibrand Sticks It to Fox News In Town Hall

June 3, 2019 at 6:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In an hour-long town hall in Dubuque, Iowa, she parried questions on President Trump’s border wall, her conservative House record and the trade war with China. She even attacked the network itself for what Gillibrand called its spreading of a ‘false narrative’ on abortion rights,” Politico reports.

“But Gillibrand’s biggest moment — and a potential viral clip — came during an exchange with Fox News’ host Chris Wallace, who asked Gillibrand to explain her tweet from December 2018, when she said the future was ‘female’ and ‘intersectional.’ ‘We want women to have a seat at the table,’ Gillibrand said. At that, Wallace jumped in and asked: ‘What about men?’”

“‘They’re already there — do you not know?’ Gillibrand said, greeted by one of the biggest rounds of applause of the night. ‘It’s not meant to be exclusionary, it’s meant to be inclusionary,’ she said. ‘All right, we’re not threatened,’ Wallace responded.”

Gillibrand’s Failure to Launch

May 31, 2019 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Her bigger problem is fundraising. To secure a spot in the first double-header of Democratic primary debates in late June, candidates must meet two thresholds: surpassing 1 percent in three recognized national polls and collecting 65,000 unique campaign contributions. Gillibrand has checked the first box, however unimpressively. Yet the second mission remains unaccomplished.”

“With the debates closing in—and with even quixotic candidates such as self-help guru Marianne Williamson hitting the 65,000-donor mark—Gillibrand is under the gun. The Democratic National Committee is limiting the total number of participants to 20. She could (and likely will) qualify by meeting the polling threshold only. But given the late gusher of contenders entering the fray, her place on stage can be guaranteed only by growing her donor ranks—and quickly.”

Quote of the Day

May 16, 2019 at 11:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As a party, we should be 100 percent pro-choice, and it should be nonnegotiable. We should not settle for less, and if our party cannot support women’s basic human rights, their fundamental freedoms to make decisions about their bodies and their futures, then we are not the party of women.”

— Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), quoted by the Washington Post.

Gillibrand Proposes Voucher System to Clean Up Politics

May 1, 2019 at 8:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) unveiled a plan on Wednesday to give every voter up to $600 in what she calls “Democracy Dollars” that they can donate to federal candidates for office, NBC News reports.

“Under Gillibrand’s plan, every eligible voter could register for vouchers to donate up to $100 in a primary election and $100 in a general election each cycle, either all at once or in $10 increments to one or more candidates over time. Each participant would get a separate $200 pool for House, Senate and presidential contests for a total maximum donation of $600 for those federal offices.”

Gillibrand Shrugs Off Cuomo’s Endorsement of Biden

April 27, 2019 at 7:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) “is shrugging off her state’s governor’s endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign over her own,” the AP reports.

Said Gillibrand: “Our governor can endorse whoever he likes, but I am the best candidate to defeat President Trump, and I will. The truth is, this presidential election will not be won on the endorsements of powerful people.”

Gillibrand Blames Poor Fundraising on Franken Backlash

April 14, 2019 at 5:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In a memo on Sunday, Ms. Gillibrand’s campaign suggested that her fund-raising had been hampered by a continuing backlash to her decision in 2017 to call for the resignation of a fellow Democratic senator, Al Franken of Minnesota, over sexual harassment allegations.”

From the memo: “There’s no question that the first quarter was adversely impacted by certain establishment donors — and many online — who continue to punish Kirsten for standing up for her values and for women.”

Gillibrand’s Town Hall Drew Rock-Bottom Ratings

April 10, 2019 at 7:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s town hall on CNN last night “bagged a paltry 491,000 in total viewers and 115,000 in the advertiser coveted A25-54 demographic,” Mediaite reports.

“For some context: in the first quarter of 2019, CNN’s 10 p.m. host Don Lemon doubled those numbers: on average, he bagged 1.16 million total viewers and 361,000 in the demo.”

“While town halls may not be as big a draw as Don Lemon, they don’t always bring rock-bottom ratings, as Gillibrand’s did. Kamala Harris’ town hall in January drew record ratings for CNN: 1.95 million total viewers and 712,000 in the demo.”

Gillibrand Sought to Overturn Ban on Handguns

March 27, 2019 at 11:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In an attempt to earn an NRA endorsement for her 2008 re-election bid, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) — then a member of the U.S. House — signed an amicus brief in support of overturning a Washington, D.C. ban on handguns, CNN reports.

During her tenure in the House, Gillibrand “fought vigorously in defense of gun rights, including the right to own handguns… Gillibrand has said she regrets her past positions and frames her views on guns at the time as supporting hunting rights.”

Gillibrand to Kick Off Bid In Front of Trump Hotel

March 24, 2019 at 6:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) “will deliver a fiery first speech as an official presidential candidate in New York City on Sunday, calling President Trump a ‘coward’ at the doorstep of one of his most famous properties,” Reuters reports.

“The location in front of Trump International Hotel – which she plans to call a ‘shrine to greed, division and vanity,’ according to excerpts from her prepared remarks – is intended to show voters that Gillibrand will attack Trump directly, in contrast to some Democratic rivals who have hesitated to focus on the Republican president early in the 2020 campaign.”

Gillibrand Will Say: “President Trump is tearing apart the moral fabric of our country. He demonizes the vulnerable and he punches down… Our President is a coward.”
