May 28, 2019 · 4:38 pm ET · Leave a Comment

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) told WAMC he will run for a fourth term in 2022.

Said Cuomo: “I believe this state is doing great things at a time when a nation is floundering. I believe that. I believe we have the opportunity to set a standard for progressivity and normalcy. I know this job, I work seven days a week at it, and I think we have accomplishments.”

Cuomo Won His Primary By Running Against Trump

September 14, 2018 · 7:21 am ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The strategy allowed Mr. Cuomo — who has spent most of his career ruling and running from the center — to present himself as a progressive warrior in a way that his record might not always support. For most of his seven-plus years in office, after all, Mr. Cuomo has had a friendly working relationship with Republicans, and has failed to push hard for a number of liberal priorities, such as campaign finance reform.”

“During the early days of the Trump administration, Mr. Cuomo had scrupulously avoided criticizing the president by name, even suggesting there might be a benefit to New York if Mr. Trump helped pay for infrastructure.”

“Not so during the closing days of the campaign, when the governor openly mocked Mr. Trump, going so far on Wednesday as to call him ‘that boy’ and — gulp — not a real New Yorker.”

May 21, 2018 · 9:29 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Hillary Clinton is expected to break her virtual hiatus from the campaign trail this week, when she will endorse Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York in a contested Democratic primary — a move sure to enrage liberal activists seeking Mr. Cuomo’s ouster at the hands of Cynthia Nixon, the actress turned progressive insurgent,” the New York Times reports.

“Mrs. Clinton has also recorded an automated phone call endorsing Stacey Abrams, the former Democratic leader in the Georgia House, who is competing for the party’s nomination for governor on Tuesday.”

“If a race between Ms. Nixon and Mr. Cuomo does materialize, it would instantly become one of the most intriguing Democratic primaries in the country, pitting a celebrity first-time candidate with an ability to command national media attention versus a two-term incumbent sitting atop $30 million and known for his aggressive political tactics.”

How Trump Nearly Ran for Governor

March 6, 2016 · 7:20 am ET · 14 Comments

“An examination by the New York Times of contemporaneous documents and emails, as well as interviews with people who met with Mr. Trump during that period, found how he carefully weighed a run, measuring whether the governor’s office was a necessary steppingstone to his long-held goal: the White House. His calculations at the time run contrary to the seat-of-the-pants image he projects on the campaign trail, and offer a look at a formative stage of his presidential ambitions.”

“He discussed with state Republican leaders the idea of using the governorship as a platform to run for president, a situation in which he would serve for a year or so and be succeeded by his lieutenant governor.”

Cuomo Has Plenty of Money Left Over

December 2, 2014 · 8:44 am ET · 3 Comments

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) finished his re-election campaign with $9.2 million in the bank, Capital New York reports.

“It’s unclear what Cuomo will do with his war chest, particularly if he does not opt to seek a third term. A good-government advocate has said that it could seed a Cuomo-themed super PAC should he choose to become a national candidate. New York law does not have special restrictions on leftover funds in campaign accounts that belong to politicians who decline to seek office again, or die.”

Cuomo Had Secret Pact with Republicans

November 10, 2014 · 7:15 am ET · 22 Comments

Fred Dicker: “The state’s most powerful Republican secretly worked for months to help Democratic Gov. Cuomo win re-election — in exchange for Cuomo’s promise not to aid Senate Democrats in their Long Island races, a top New York GOP leader has charged.”

“Former state Republican Party Executive Director Michael Lawler — who managed Rob Astorino’s ill-fated gubernatorial run against Cuomo — told The Post that he learned of the alleged bombshell deal between Senate GOP leader Dean Skelos and Cuomo just days ago, after suspecting for months that it existed.”
