Trump Moves to Shutter Environmental Offices

February 6, 2025 at 6:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a little over two weeks, the Trump administration has taken unprecedented steps to shutter or remake federal offices focused on the environment, causing turmoil and confusion for current and former employees,” the Washington Post reports.

“The latest shake-up came Wednesday, when Trump appointees at the Environmental Protection Agency notified staff members that they plan to close the Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights and place its employees on administrative leave.”

“The tumult has also engulfed the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, a little-known yet crucial office tasked with defending the federal government’s environmental actions in court.”

Wall Street Journal: Trump to place at least 100 EPA environmental justice workers on leave.

Officials Say Trump Nearly Flooded Farms in California

February 1, 2025 at 10:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump declared victory on Friday in his long-running water war with California, boasting he sent billions of gallons south — but local officials say they narrowly prevented him from possibly flooding farms,” Politico reports.

“Local officials had to talk the Army Corps of Engineers down after it abruptly alerted them Thursday afternoon it was about to increase flows from two reservoirs to maximum capacity — a move the agency said was in response to Trump directing the federal government to ‘maximize’ water supplies.”

New York Times: Trump officials release water in California that experts say will serve little use.

Republicans Want to Keep Parts of Biden’s Climate Law

December 1, 2024 at 12:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s campaign-trail vow to end President Biden’s signature climate law is running into a cold reality: Too many Republican lawmakers want to keep it,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Inflation Reduction Act has channeled billions of dollars to renewable-energy projects across the country, with Republican-led states getting the lion’s share of the funding. Even though not a single Republican in the House or Senate backed the Democratic package, today there likely isn’t enough support in Congress to pass a repeal, according to Capitol Hill watchers and former Trump administration officials who worked on energy policy.”

The Sexual-Abuse Cabinet

November 22, 2024 at 12:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jill Filipovic: “If everyone is a sexual predator, then no one’s history of misdeeds matters (or, at least, no one needs to be held accountable).”

“MAGA Republicans seem to be having their own #MeToo moment, except here, a growing cohort of men is essentially saying: Oh, another man accused of sexual predation? #MeToo—and so what? Being accused of sexual harassment, abuse, or assault is no longer disqualifying; on the right, it has been normalized. It may even be an asset.”

Can Elon Musk Influence Trump on Climate Change?

November 8, 2024 at 5:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk has described himself as ‘pro-environment’ and ‘super pro climate.’ But he also threw himself wholeheartedly into electing as president someone who has dismissed global warming as a hoax,” the New York Times reports.

“Now, as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to enter the White House, one big question is how much sway — if any — Mr. Musk’s views on climate change and clean energy might have in the new administration.”

“During the campaign, Mr. Trump noticeably softened his rhetoric on electric vehicles as he grew more friendly with Mr. Musk, the billionaire chief executive of Tesla. After months of bashing plug-in cars and promising to halt their sales, Mr. Trump backtracked slightly this summer.”

Bloomberg: Trump plans to dismantle Biden’s climate law. It won’t be easy.

Biden Spending Climate Cash Fast

“Former President Donald Trump has said he would cancel all unspent funds from President Joe Biden’s signature climate law if he wins the presidential election on Nov. 5,” Reuters reports.

“But the vast majority of grants will be spent by the time a new president takes office in January, and targeting what remains would be a massive legal challenge.”

How Close Are the Planet’s Climate Tipping Points?

August 12, 2024 at 4:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Right now, every moment of every day, we humans are reconfiguring Earth’s climate bit by bit. Hotter summers and wetter storms. Higher seas and fiercer wildfires. The steady, upward turn of the dial on a host of threats to our homes, our societies and the environment around us,” the New York Times reports.

“We might also be changing the climate in an even bigger way.”

“For the past two decades, scientists have been raising alarms about great systems in the natural world that warming, caused by carbon emissions, might be pushing toward collapse. These systems are so vast that they can stay somewhat in balance even as temperatures rise. But only to a point.”

August 7, 2024 at 1:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who has just been tapped as Kamala Harris’ running mate, has quietly become one of the country’s most aggressive advocates for taking action on climate change,” Capital & Main reports.

“Under his leadership, Minnesota has adopted some of the most ambitious climate policies in the nation — including a law he signed in 2023 that requires the state to generate all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2040. During that legislative session, Walz and state lawmakers pushed through at least 40 other climate-related initiatives.”
