Dormant Terrorist Court Activated After 30 Years

July 23, 2026 · 8:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

“A little-known court tasked with handling highly sensitive deportation cases against alleged alien terrorists has laid dormant since its 1996 creation, lacking even a website for tracking any proceedings before it,” CNN reports.

“But this month, the Alien Terrorist Removal Court sprung to life with a first-of-its-kind case filed by the Trump administration as it reaches for new deportation tactics.”

“For 30 years, a rotating set of judges assigned to the court have sat ready to hear any cases brought to it. Yet never before has the federal government thought it had a case that required the court – or was worth the risk of testing the constitutionality of its controversial procedures.”

The See-No-Evil Supreme Court

July 23, 2026 · 7:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Adam Serwer: “The Roberts Court accelerated its assault on the freedoms guaranteed by the Reconstruction amendments this term, leaving only the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship intact—and that by only one vote.”

“Across multiple cases dealing with voting and immigration, a consistent theme has emerged from the Roberts Court’s jurisprudence: a determination to ignore, rationalize, or misrepresent the explicit animus of government officials—and the president in particular—toward the groups that have been targeted.”

“This trend began in the first Trump administration, and has grown only more apparent as Donald Trump’s attacks on immigrants and ethnic minorities in the United States have become more brazen. The Court’s approach echoes one of the most notorious decisions in American history: the 1944 ruling in Korematsu v. United States, which upheld the forced relocation of tens of thousands of Japanese Americans in the middle of World War II.”

ICE Accelerates Immigration Arrests

July 22, 2026 · 8:17 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is ramping up immigration arrests, ending a spring lull that followed the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens by federal agents,” Bloomberg reports.

“Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents made 16,213 arrests during the first 11 days of July for a daily average of more than 1,400, according to federal records. That came after a daily average of more than 1,300 in June, when the monthly total of almost 40,000 set a record for President Donald Trump’s second term.”

Mullin Reaches Out to Business Groups

July 20, 2026 · 4:21 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Markwayne Mullin is cultivating a relationship with business groups whose concerns about losing workers to aggressive immigration enforcement had been rebuffed by former secretary Kristi L. Noem,” the Washington Post reports.

“Earlier this month, DHS officials met at the agency’s Washington headquarters with the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition, which represents the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and major trade associations that depend on immigrant labor.”

“It was the first such meeting to be reported since President Donald Trump reentered the White House. Business groups say they have been trying to gain a foothold at the agency since Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests began to spike last year.”

FBI Will No Longer Investigate ICE Agents

July 19, 2026 · 8:07 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Federal agents around the country were told in recent days that the FBI would no longer investigate confrontations with immigration agents — cases that sometimes yield evidence that could be used to prosecute Department of Homeland Security agents implicated in violent encounters, according to people briefed on the decision,” the New York Times reports.

“If enacted, such a change would sharply limit law enforcement scrutiny of immigration agents, as the Trump administration draws mounting criticism over killings at the hands of federal officers.”

“The woman, Ashley Brouillette, identified the agent as David Brouillette, 37, in an interview on Thursday. She said that when she spoke to him on Wednesday about the shooting, Mr. Brouillette said that it was justified.”

Maine Democrats Embrace Abolishing ICE

“After a federal immigration officer fatally shot a man in Maine this week, the state’s major Democratic Senate candidates have embraced a once-fringe position: abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” the Washington Post reports.

“The leftward shift shows how the contenders, competing in a fast-paced contest to replace Graham Platner as the nominee, are adopting the spirit of his aggressive campaign, which electrified Maine Democrats before he dropped out because of a sexual assault allegation, which he denied.”

Trump Again Claims Noncitizens Voted Illegally

July 17, 2026 · 1:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security claimed on Thursday that they had uncovered a significant number of noncitizens registered in four states, but offered no evidence to support their findings nor any description of their investigative process,” the New York Times reports.

“Election officials in at least one state — Nevada — immediately rebuffed the claims regarding noncitizens on their voter rolls.”

“Evidence-free claims that noncitizens have voted in elections have been core to the president’s political message — and central to his justification to enact the SAVE America Act, federal voting legislation that Democrats claim is aimed at tipping the scales to benefit Republicans.”

“The Trump administration is considering placing a bond of $100,000 on some green-card seekers applying at U.S. consulates abroad, according to people familiar with the plans,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The State Department is developing the proposal as part of the Trump administration’s continuing efforts to limit immigration by foreigners of limited means, and ensure that any immigrants who do move to the U.S. can support themselves.”

Trump Learned of ICE Halt From Cable News

July 16, 2026 · 8:56 am ET · Leave a Comment

“When Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin decided to halt most vehicle stops by federal immigration officials, he didn’t have a chance to brief President Trump before news of the decision started to leak,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mullin had made the decision Monday evening with acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Dave Venturella, following the fatal shootings of two immigrants in the span of a week that prompted public outrage…”

“But no one had briefed Trump on the decision, the people said. He only caught wind of it from critical coverage on cable TV and furious outside allies, who took to social media to register their disapproval.”

Trump Deportation Push Falters After Fatal ICE Encounters

July 16, 2026 · 7:52 am ET · Leave a Comment

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lifted a temporary pause on vehicle stops after President Donald Trump touted the controversial tactic as an essential enforcement tool, a White House official said Wednesday,” the Washington Post reports.

“ICE halted vehicle stops after officers fatally shot two people in less than a week during encounters involving vehicles. Within days, the short-lived policy had been ended, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the internal policy change.”

“The latest reversal underscored the White House’s bind between delivering on a core campaign promise for mass deportations and the deadly consequences of its enforcement operations, repeating a cycle of escalating arrests and recoiling from the political fallout.”
