Trumpcare Could Cost GOP Working-Class Voters

May 2, 2017 at 1:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten: “President Trump stormed into the White House thanks, in part, to working-class voters. Well, that was the conventional wisdom, in any case (there’s some debate over how big a factor economic anxiety actually was). But whatever working-class support Trump has, the Republican push to overhaul U.S. health care is putting it in peril.”

“The American Health Care Act, which may come up for a vote in the House this week (or not), appears to divide the Republican base along income lines. More specifically, Trump’s backing of the AHCA — and the renewed GOP effort to pass the bill — could eat away at the president’s support among lower-income Americans who otherwise like the job Trump is doing.”

Trump Rallies May Add to His Legal Woes

May 2, 2017 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A pro-Donald Trump biker gang’s physical handling of protesters at a weekend rally could add to the president’s legal woes, with one attendee considering a fresh lawsuit as protesters already suing over violence at rallies last year plan to cite the recent events as proof of an ongoing pattern,” Politico reports.

“The skirmishes underscored the unique challenges surrounding a president who continues holding campaign-style rallies nearly six months after his election, eliciting equally charged fervor among his supporters and critics — and who hasn’t disavowed the violence that characterized much of his campaign.”

Why Trump Should Be Worried About the Budget Deal

May 2, 2017 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“By cutting a bipartisan spending compromise among themselves, Republicans and Democrats in Congress not only prevented the White House from delivering on President Trump’s priorities in his very first budget, they also drafted a handy blueprint for circumventing the Trump administration in the future,” the New York Times reports.

“It was an outcome that should worry the new president even though Mr. Trump will be spared the humiliation of a government shutdown early in his tenure if he signs the legislation.”

Obamacare Repeal Delaying Rest of Trump Agenda

May 2, 2017 at 11:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The congressional GOP’s protracted efforts to repeal Obamacare could exact a heavy toll on the rest of Donald Trump’s legislative agenda,” Politico reports.

“If repeal in the House is successful, action on some of the president’s top legislative priorities is expected to be pushed back to late this year or even next year, when lawmakers will be up for reelection and more reluctant to cast tough votes. The delay also threatens to sap whatever Republican momentum remains from the election, in the midst of what’s often the most prolific stretch of a new presidency.”

“Tax reform is the most prominent issue expected to be put on the back burner. But lawmakers haven’t even begun discussing Trump’s trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal. And the GOP’s long-held vow to get its appropriations process in order looks like a lost cause.”

Trump Says U.S. Needs a Government Shutdown

May 2, 2017 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that the United States needed “a good shutdown” this fall to force a partisan confrontation over federal spending, “and suggested that he might move to reverse longstanding Senate rules that effectively require a supermajority to approve most major legislation,” the New York Times reports.

“The declarations, in a pair of posts on Twitter, appeared to defend a spending package that Congress is likely to clear this week, but that fails to accomplish many of Mr. Trump’s stated goals, including any money to build a wall on the southern border that was his most talked-about campaign promise.”

Ivanka’s Guide to Having It All

May 2, 2017 at 9:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times reviews Ivanka Trump’s new book, Women Who Work:

It’s in her description of her daily life, in which she somehow — until the election, anyway — managed to run her own company, serve as an executive vice president in the Trump Organization, train for a half marathon and spend time alone with each of her three children. Absent locating a wormhole in space, there’s really only one way to find time for all of these commitments, and that is with the help of staff. Yet her household help barely rates a mention in this discussion.

By the time Trump gets to her primer on maternity leave, she is, consciously or not, addressing an imaginary cohort of upper management and C.E.O.s. Back at work, she expects you to have a team. It is amazing how many times “Women Who Work” talks about the importance of Your Team. There are more teams in this book than there are in the N.F.L.

“Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, didn’t identify on his government financial disclosure form that he is currently a part-owner of a real-estate finance startup and has a number of loans from banks on properties he co-owns,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Shaking Things Up, Big League

May 2, 2017 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “The man likes his strongmen. From Vladimir Putin to Xi Jinping, to the heads of Turkey, Egypt, Thailand and now the Philippines, President Trump has broken with bipartisan tradition to offer praise and even a smattering of White House invites to a rogues’ gallery of despots, dictators and bad dudes. Now comes Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader whom Trump told CBS is a ‘smart cookie’ and whom he told Bloomberg News he would be ‘honored’ to meet ‘under the right circumstances.’ This is shaking things up, big league – in ways that challenge Republican orthodoxy and comfort levels, and mark a break from longstanding U.S. policy of seeking to isolate bad actors on the world stage.”

“Even the president’s history lessons are confounding. His contention that Andrew Jackson might have averted the Civil War – or ‘that one,’ in Trump’s formulation – reveals something about Trump’s state of mind that may be worse to take seriously instead of literally. It is literally false that Jackson expressed horror about events that happened more than a decade after the former president’s death. It is seriously troubling to many who have a stake in Trump policies to think that a slaveholder who was also behind the Indian Removal Act and the “Trail of Tears” would have done a better job making history than Abraham Lincoln.”

Was This the Final Blow for the GOP Health Plan?

May 2, 2017 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a heart-wrenching 13-minute monologue, Jimmy Kimmel opened up about his son’s heart condition, which was discovered just hours after his birth 10 days ago. With tears in his eyes, the host described the harrowing ordeal, which started with a nurse noticing baby William John Kimmel’s color was off and ended with him being rushed into open-heart surgery,” New York Magazine reports.

“We were brought up to believe that we live in the greatest country in the world, but until a few years ago, millions and millions of us had no access to health insurance at all. You know, before 2014, if you were born with congenital heart disease, like my son was, there’s a good chance you’d never be able to get health insurance, because you had a pre-existing condition. You were born with a preexisting condition. And if your parents didn’t have insurance, you may not even live long enough to get denied because of a preexisting condition.”

“If your baby is going to die and it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I think that’s something that whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat or something else, we all agree on that, right?”.

“Around 2 million people watch Kimmel’s show each night… Kimmel succinctly explained what tinkering with protections for preexisting conditions could do to an innocent baby, and pointed out that’s what the GOP is trying to do this week. What wavering House Republican is going to decide now is the time to come out in favor of the bill?”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“As a Trump supporter I do my best not to pay attention to what he says. If I pulled my hair out for every nutty thing he said, I’d be bald.”

Ossoff In Dead Heat with Handel

May 2, 2017 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Anzalone Liszt Grove Research (D) poll in Georgia’s 6th congressional district shows Jon Ossoff (D) just ahead of Karen Handel (R), 48% to 47%, well within the 4 percent margin of error.

“It has a scant 5 percent of voters in the district as undecided – reflective of the all-consuming nature of the nationally-watched race.”

Ross Says Missile Strike was ‘After-Dinner Entertainment’

May 2, 2017 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaking at a conference, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross “recalled the scene at Mar-a-Lago on April 6, when the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping was interrupted by the strike on Syria,” Variety reports.

Said Ross: “Just as dessert was being served, the president explained to Mr. Xi he had something he wanted to tell him, which was the launching of 59 missiles into Syria. It was in lieu of after-dinner entertainment.”

As the crowd laughed, Ross added: “The thing was, it didn’t cost the president anything to have that entertainment.”

Quote of the Day

May 2, 2017 at 7:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It seems to be among the most bizarre recent 24 hours in American presidential history. It was all just surreal disarray and a confused mental state from the president.”

— Historian Douglas Brinkley, quoted by Politico, after President Trump questioned why the Civil War needed to happen.

Republicans Still Don’t Have the Votes on Health Care

May 2, 2017 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Nather: “If they had the votes to pass it, they would have scheduled the vote by now.”

“The Wednesday vote Republicans had wanted is looking less likely, purely because time is running out, so keep your calendar open on Thursday too. After that, they leave for another recess.”

“Realistically, we may not know until the night before the vote, because Republican leaders won’t call it until they’re pretty sure it will pass. One top GOP aide says the most likely scenario is a Rules Committee meeting that would be called on short notice to prepare the latest amendments, followed by a House vote the next day.”

Playbook: “It feels like we’re at a tipping point. Because if you are publicly against the bill, that probably means you believe your constituents think it’s bad policy. And flipping last minute under pressure from the White House or Republican leaders is a risky move, politically. Just ask any of the Democrats who were the ‘deciding vote’ on Obamacare. REMEMBER: This bill, in its current form, will not go anywhere in the Senate. It will be massively overhauled at best, or pushed aside, at worst.”

Ossoff Readies $5.2 Million Ad Blitz

May 2, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Conservative groups are pouring money into Georgia’s 6th District runoff to reinforce Karen Handel’s bid for Congress. Jon Ossoff is readying a massive counterpunch,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The Democrat’s campaign has reserved more than $5.2 million in airtime for cable, TV and radio spots through the June 20 runoff. And that’s likely just a taste of what’s to come.”
