Congress Leaves with a Whimper

October 1, 2026 · 4:44 pm ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Republicans in Congress this week spent their last hours in the Capitol before the midterm elections pushing a series of meant-to-fail votes that they hoped could signal to voters that they were at least trying to address widespread concerns about the high cost of living. It was a familiar pre-election exercise made more urgent this year because those Republicans are battling stiff headwinds, including economic concerns and President Trump’s sagging approval ratings, in their battle to maintain control of Congress.”

“But they emerged with no meaningful progress on a long list of issues weighing on their constituents, leaving some wondering — if not openly doubting — whether they had done enough to persuade voters to keep them in power.”

Trump Could Target Three Fed Governors

October 1, 2026 · 4:29 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump has new ammunition he can use in his campaign against his perceived opponents at the Federal Reserve, although a watchdog report released Wednesday found no basis for criminal charges stemming from the Fed’s costly headquarters renovations,” CNBC reports.

“Combined with separate disputes involving governors Lisa Cook and Michael Barr, Trump’s decision to pin the headquarters spending issues on former Chair Jerome Powell means the president could potentially seek the removal of as many as three of the Fed’s seven board members. But recent court rulings suggest any attempt would face significant legal hurdles.”

Democratic Surge Predicted to Hit Red States Hardest

October 1, 2026 · 4:11 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Reuters: “The Democratic wave may crash hardest in states Trump won by wide margins, though Republicans are also significantly underperforming in Georgia and North Carolina, where Trump won by 2 and 3 percentage points, respectively.”

“The volume of unexpectedly competitive states could scramble the final stretch of the campaign cycle as top officials assess where to spend their war chests.”

MS NOW: In red states, some of Trump’s former supporters turn on the president.

October 1, 2026 · 3:47 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Vice President JD Vance laid into a protester, calling him a ‘Democrat plant’ and a ‘clown’ as he was heckled multiple times during a speech in Florida,” Mediaite reports.

Said Vance: “Ladies and gentlemen, that guy was nothing more, as we know this is not a representative voter from the state of Florida, that guy is a Democrat plant. He wants to raise your taxes and release illegal aliens on the streets of Florida.”

He added: “Well, we kicked him out just like we’re gonna kick out the rest of the Democrats who want to do the exact same thing.”

Republicans Halt Affordability Efforts

October 1, 2026 · 3:37 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The Republican-led Congress has left Washington until after the midterm election, abandoning efforts to address voters’ angst over affordability even as President Donald Trump’s economic approval hits new lows,” Bloomberg reports.

“After some fits and starts, GOP lawmakers failed to act on record diesel prices they acknowledge are crushing farmers and truckers. They ignored Trump’s call to shrink credit card swipe fees and a bipartisan plan to cap insulin costs. They’re divided on how to tame the nation’s soaring interest costs. And they made no headway on Trump-backed stimulus checks.”

“Staring down his lowest approval numbers at any point in office, President Donald Trump is hitting the road for the next month, he says, in hopes of boosting Republican turnout in the midterm elections,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “They like to say, ‘Oh, nobody wants him.’ Well, everybody that has me wins.”

GOP Eyes Quick Debt Ceiling Hike

“Republican lawmakers are considering a plan to deny a newly elected Democratic congressional majority a powerful piece of leverage over President Donald Trump’s administration by using the current Congress’s last few weeks in office to quickly raise the U.S. debt limit,” Bloomberg reports.

Mortgage Rates Surge

October 1, 2026 · 2:41 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Mortgage rates posted their largest increase in four years this week, one of the clearest signs of how the recent bond-market selloff is spilling into the broader economy,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mortgage rates are rising as inflation, a surge in government debt and heavy corporate borrowing for the build-out of AI push up bond yields, which move in the opposite direction of bond prices. The bond-market selloff is raising borrowing costs for home buyers and dealing blow after blow to a limping housing market.”

Trump Flexes His Muscle in Key Senate Races

October 1, 2026 · 1:39 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “President Donald Trump and Republicans are throwing cash, administration-backed projects and high-profile visits at the states with the most competitive Senate races this November, looking to overcome a persistently bad environment 33 days out from Election Day.”

“But as with much that’s Trump-related, it’s more about the headlines first and the details get filled in later — if ever…”

“Trump is also tanking in the polls, hitting new lows on his approval rating as Americans’ fears over the state of the economy continue to grow. The average 30-year mortgage is now at 7.28%. Trump is planning to be in numerous states and districts in the final sprint to Election Day, but his sagging ratings limit where he can go.”

Jared Kushner’s Massive Conflict of Interest

“At the same time Jared Kushner has acted as a key negotiator in the war in Gaza, his private equity company, Affinity Partners, has held the largest stake in an Israeli firm backing businesses involved in Israel’s military campaigns, a CNN investigation has found,” CNN reports.

“Kushner has skirted deeper scrutiny of this potential conflict of interest by acting as a volunteer envoy, rather than accepting a government job that would require him to disclose his finances.”

“In the process, Kushner has carved out an unprecedented dual role under the Trump administration – one that blends lucrative business and high-stakes politics amid a devastating war.”

“After the Kennedy Center board voted to place Trump’s name on the building in December 2025, gifts to the arts institution plunged 42% and donation pledges dropped more than 100% from January to April compared to the three months prior, one document revealed.”
