Top GOP Funding Group Cuts Off Two Incumbents

October 13, 2018 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a worrisome sign for two endangered Orange County lawmakers, a major Republican Party funding group has passed over the pair in its opening round of broadcast television advertising across Southern California,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The omission of Reps. Dana Rohrabacher and Mimi Walters by the Congressional Leadership Fund, a political action committee closely aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), comes at a crucial inflection point in the midterm election when the two parties begin assessing their likely winners and losers.”

All Trump But No Strategy

October 13, 2018 at 12:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Air Force One has become a flying call center, the Oval Office, a revolving door of journalists, dignitaries and celebrities. Rock stars and cabinet secretaries wander the White House driveway, a place that at any given moment can be the site of an impromptu news conference.”

“When President Trump enters one of the more talkative cycles of his presidency — and ahead of the midterms, post-Supreme Court confirmation, he is definitely in one — the environment around him becomes a stage, and inevitable questions of a grand strategy arise.”

“But there is none, people close to him say. His aides are simply clearing a path as the president speaks — and speaks, and speaks, and speaks — up for himself.”

Many Suburban Men Stand with Trump

October 13, 2018 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As an edgy, divided nation heads into a crucial election, much of the attention is focused on the anti-Trump animus of suburban women, which seems to have gained a few degrees in intensity over the Supreme Court confirmation of Brett M. Kavanaugh.”

“Much less examined are their male counterparts. While recent polls show that white women with a college degree favor Democratic House candidates by a large margin, 20 points or more, white college-educated men — who focus more singularly on economic issues, according to surveys — are a potential bulwark for the president and his party. It is especially true in suburban battleground districts that are likely to help decide the next House majority.”

Trump Praises Robert E. Lee

October 13, 2018 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump called Confederate commander Robert E. Lee “incredible” and claimed President Abraham Lincoln had a “phobia” because he kept losing to Lee during the Civil War, the Washington Post reports.

The comments came at a rally in Ohio during an anecdote about Ohio-born President Ulysses S. Grant’s alleged drinking problems.

Said Trump: “So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee. Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle.”

He continued: “And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, ‘I can’t beat Robert E. Lee. They said to Lincoln, ‘You can’t use him anymore, he’s an alcoholic.’ And Lincoln said, ‘I don’t care if he’s an alcoholic, frankly, give me six or seven more just like him.’ He started to win.”

Kushner Likely Paid No Federal Incomes Taxes for Years

October 13, 2018 at 11:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Over the past decade, Jared Kushner’s family company has spent billions of dollars buying real estate. His personal stock investments have soared. His net worth has quintupled to almost $324 million,” the New York Times reports.

“And yet, for several years running, Mr. Kushner — President Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser — appears to have paid almost no federal income taxes.”

“His low tax bills are the result of a common tax-minimizing maneuver that, year after year, generated millions of dollars in losses for Mr. Kushner, according to the documents. But the losses were only on paper — Mr. Kushner and his company did not appear to actually lose any money. The losses were driven by depreciation, a tax benefit that lets real estate investors deduct a portion of the cost of their buildings from their taxable income every year.”

Trump Vows ‘Severe Punishment’ If Saudis Killed Dissident

October 13, 2018 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told 60 Minutes that the Saudis could be behind the disappearance of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi and, if so, the U.S. would inflict “severe punishment.”

He also said the matter is especially serious because, “this man was a reporter.”

He added: “There’s something– you’ll be surprised to hear me say that, there’s something really terrible and disgusting about that if that was the case.”

Biden Doesn’t Hold Back on Trump

October 13, 2018 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Joe Biden, in some of his harshest criticism of President Trump to date, said that the president was “trashing American values” and undermining institutions to “amass power,” the New York Times reports.

Said Biden: “He is just trashing American values the way he talks about people, the way he makes fun of people, the way he denigrates folks. I got to tell you, I think there is a method to his madness because he wants you to get down in the mosh pit with him.”

GOP Overwhelmed by Flood of Democratic Cash

October 13, 2018 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A deluge of Democratic spending in the final days of the battle for the House has triggered recriminations among Republicans and forced the party to lean on its biggest patron to salvage their majority,” Politico reports.

“Since the end of July, Republican candidates in the 70 most contested races have reserved $60 million in TV ads, compared to $109 million for Democratic hopefuls… The disparity is almost certain to grow, as former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg makes good on plans to spend nearly $80 million to help Democrats flip the House.”

West Virginia Tries Smartphone Voting

October 13, 2018 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“West Virginia is about to take a leap of faith in voting technology — but it could put people’s ballots at risk,” Politico reports.

“Next month, it will become the first state to deploy a smartphone app in a general election, allowing hundreds of overseas residents and members of the military stationed abroad to cast their ballots remotely. And the app will rely on blockchain, the same buzzy technology that underpins Bitcoin, in yet another Election Day first.”

Inside Trump’s Pre-Midterm Media Blitzkrieg

October 12, 2018 at 6:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “In the middle of September, Donald Trump wanted to make something very clear to his senior staff: He didn’t feel like he was talking to enough reporters, and he needed to talk to as many as humanly possible in the coming weeks.”

“According to two knowledgeable sources, the president told some of his top lieutenants, including White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Bill Shine, that he was frustrated and believed he wasn’t getting his message out enough on mainstream channels in the weeks leading up to the critical midterm elections.”

“Trump then directed his top comms brass to make sure he would get on the phone and facetime with more journalists from various outlets (not simply Fox), to supplement his increasingly busy 2018 campaign-trail schedule. He wanted a media strategy for “flood[ing] the zone,” as one senior administration official put it, and to make himself an even grander presence on the TV shows and print publications he so addictively consumes.”

Avenatti Tries to Raise Money Off Beto O’Rourke

October 12, 2018 at 3:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sinema’s Anti-War Past Under Scrutiny

October 12, 2018 at 3:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s past ties to far-left groups are resurfacing as she campaigns to win Arizona’s Senate race against her Republican opponent, Rep. Martha McSally. Sinema is running on her Congressional record as a hawk on military spending and defense, proclaiming in an ad she would do ‘whatever it takes’ to keep America safe and boasting that she fought for ‘billions for military spending,'” CNN reports.

“But the Democratic congresswoman also has an extensive past as a progressive activist. Her events and associations in opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — and her early years as a Democratic lawmaker in Arizona — frequently brought her into contact with the left-wing fringe.”

Trump’s Accomplishments Add Up

October 12, 2018 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Sullivan: “As I’ve noted before, Trump’s record as a force of destruction is profound, whether it be the sabotage of Obamacare, the devastation of democratic norms, or the rattling of NATO. But as the months tick by, there’s a decent case that Trump’s proactive accomplishments are beginning to add up as well: a huge tax cut, two Supreme Court justices, wholesale deregulation, renegotiation of NAFTA, isolation of Iran, and a broader reboot of bilateral nationalism on the world stage.”

“But I’m not talking merely about policy — he has also shifted the entire polity more decisively toward the authoritarian style of government. In this respect, yes, the Trump administration has indeed accomplished much more than many of us want to believe.”

Trump Weighs New Family Separation Effort at Border

October 12, 2018 at 2:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is actively considering plans that could again separate parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to reverse soaring numbers of families attempting to cross illegally into the United States,” the Washington Post reports.

“One option under consideration is for the government to detain asylum-seeking families together for up to 20 days, then give parents a choice: Stay in family detention with your child for months or years as your immigration case proceeds, or allow children to be taken to a government shelter so other relatives or guardians can seek custody.”

Democrats Have an Online Fundraising Machine

October 12, 2018 at 2:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dallas Morning News: “ActBlue, the online Democratic fund-raising platform, makes it easier than ever for candidates to collect small sums from many people, and to prompt supporters for recurring donations. O’Rourke has brought in at least $25 million that way this year, and based on the latest tally, likely far more.”

Playbook: “Republicans have nothing like ActBlue, and it’s bludgeoning candidates across the country.”

October 12, 2018 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that slightly more American voters say the debate over Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court makes them more inclined to support Democrats for Congress than Republicans, 33% to 27% with another 39% say it makes no difference.

Women say the episode draws them toward Democrats over Republicans by a 16-point margin, 40% to 24%, while men are more evenly split, 25% to 30%.

Said Wagner: “Governor Wolf, let me tell you, between now and November 6th you’d better put a catcher’s mask on your face, because I’m going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes. I’m going to win this for the state of Pennsylvania, and we’re throwing you out of office.”
