Romney Moves Towards Senate Bid

November 10, 2017 at 7:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The former GOP presidential nominee is huddling with Utah’s class of GOP power brokers, contacting the state’s major political donors, and hitting the trail for candidates running in local races amid mounting speculation that the state’s longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, will retire. Romney is also raising money for House and Senate Republicans, winning him favor with GOP leaders ahead of a treacherous midterm election.”

“The Senate might seem like an unexpected landing place for the 70-year-old former Massachusetts governor and two-time presidential candidate. Yet those who’ve spoken with Romney in recent days are convinced he’s prepared to jump in. After falling short in his quest for the White House and then being passed over by President Donald Trump for secretary of state, friends say Romney still has unquenched political ambitions.”

Mounting GOP Retirements Threaten House Majority

November 10, 2017 at 7:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A retirement wave has hit House Republicans, emboldening Democrats who have become increasingly bullish about their prospects of winning back a majority in 2018,” The Hill reports.

“Republicans said more retirement announcements are expected in the coming days and weeks. The other veteran GOP chairmen who are facing term limits and could retire are Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA), Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul (R-TX).”

“Another long-serving Texas Republican, powerful Rules Chairman Pete Sessions, isn’t facing term limits but represents a congressional district that’s trending blue. Sessions is on Democrats’ retirement watch list, as well as Appropriations Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), former Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), former Homeland Security Chairman Peter King (R-NY), and Reps. Leonard Lance (R-NJ), Patrick Meehan (R-PA) and Bruce Poliquin (R-ME).

Russian Bots Rushed to Deflect Bad Trump News

November 10, 2017 at 7:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Disguised Russian agents on Twitter rushed to deflect scandalous news about Donald Trump just before last year’s presidential election while straining to refocus criticism on the mainstream media and Hillary Clinton’s campaign,” according to an Associated Press analysis of since-deleted accounts.

“The analysis illuminates the obvious strategy behind the Russian cyber meddling: swiftly react, distort and distract attention from any negative Mr. Trump news.”

Revenge of the Obama Coalition

November 10, 2017 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michelle Goldberg: “if you squint at Tuesday’s results, you can sort of see a synthesis emerging between Obama and Hillary Clinton’s theory of the emerging Democratic electorate — in which Democrats win by appealing to a coalition of white professionals and minorities — and Bernie Sanders’s focus on grass-roots organizing and economic populism.”

“In some ways the election was the revenge of the Obama coalition. Educated white liberals joined people of color to elect an amazingly diverse group of candidates. A Latina single mother, Michelle De La Isla, was elected mayor of Topeka, Kan. Wilmot Collins, a refugee from Liberia, won the mayoral race in Helena, Mont. Seattle elected its first lesbian mayor, Jenny Durkan. After a year in which liberals have been bludgeoned by demands that they abandon identity politics and empathize with resentful Trump voters, the election was a reminder that white men needn’t be the center of the political universe.”

Mueller Likely to Probe Gates’ Side Gig as Movie Producer

November 10, 2017 at 6:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

McClatchy: “Rick Gates, indicted last week with his former boss and mentor Paul Manafort in the special counsel investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election, is best known as a political consultant and lobbyist. Less well known is his sideline as a Hollywood producer. Gates has been involved in a handful of films, including this year’s Walk of Fame, which starred Clint Eastwood’s son Scott.”

“Gates himself has not been sued or charged in connection with any movies. But given that his co-producers have been, and that film production is known for being forgiving when it comes to clouding the original source of funds invested, experts say it’s extremely unlikely that Mueller is not investigating this part of Gates’ finances.”

“Gates’s film connections also have a distinctly former Soviet flavor.”

The Washington Post‘s blockbuster report on Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) pursuing sexual relationships with teenagers is solid reporting. Four women — none of whom reached out to the newspaper and who don’t know each other — are on the record with their accusations. Another 26 people corroborated their stories.

Saving Roy Moore Just Isn’t Worth It

November 9, 2017 at 7:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonah Goldberg: “I am one of those naïve fools who actually believed that the conservatives who often talked the loudest about the supreme importance of character were sincere. The last two years disabused me of that.”

“But just as a matter of cold realpolitik, I cannot grasp why so many people think it’s a good idea to stand by a man who, if elected, will serve as a negative campaign ad made flesh. I get the argument that it’s a ‘binary choice!’ But it’s a binary choice now, because a bunch of people who want to see the GOP burn down made it one. In the long run, a Senator Moore would cost Republicans more seats than the one he might give them. He’d be an albatross for every elected Republican, including President Trump, who will be asked to take a side on every scene in the clown show Moore would bring to Washington. And every conservative who ever denounces a Democrat for immoral behavior or insane views will be asked, ‘Oh yeah, why did you support Roy Moore then?'”

“Saving Steve Bannon’s reputation as the leader of some (doomed) movement certainly isn’t worth it, not for the cost to the GOP not to mention your own souls.”

Moore Fundraises Off Report Alleging He’s a Pedophile

November 9, 2017 at 7:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Roy Moore (R) “sent a fundraising email Thursday afternoon asking for donations to combat the ‘Obama-Clinton Machine’s liberal media lapdogs,’ hours after the Washington Post published accounts from four women who said that Moore pursued relationships with them when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers,” Politico reports.

Said Moore: “The forces of evil will lie, cheat, steal — even inflict physical harm — if they believe it will silence and shut up Christian conservatives like you and me.”

The email then asks for an “emergency contribution” to Moore’s campaign.

Moore Refuses to Exit Race

November 9, 2017 at 6:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Embattled Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) told supporters “that he would not back down amid calls for him to step aside from the race following a new report that accuses him of inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor in 1979,” The Hill reports.

Said Moore: “I refuse to stand down.”

Both Campaigns Offered Research from Dossier Firm

November 9, 2017 at 6:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The same political research firm that prepared a dossier on Trump campaign ties to Russia had unrelated information on Clinton Foundation donors that a Russian lawyer obtained and offered to President Donald Trump’s eldest son last year,” Reuters reports.

“The White House and Republican lawmakers have attacked the firm, Fusion GPS, over the dossier compiled by a former British spy… The sources told Reuters that the negative information that Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya wanted to give to Republican Trump’s campaign at a June 2016 meeting in New York had been dug up by Fusion GPS in an unrelated investigation.”

Mueller Interviews Top White House Aide

November 9, 2017 at 6:28 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller has been interviewed as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe,” CNN reports.

“The interview brings the special counsel investigation into President Trump’s inner circle in the White House. Miller is the highest-level aide still working at the White House known to have talked to investigators.”

“Miller’s role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey was among the topics discussed during the interview as part of the probe into possible obstruction of justice.”

Write-In Campaign May Not Be Possible for Strange

November 9, 2017 at 5:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

With speculation that Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) could run as a write-in Senate candidate in next month’s Alabama special election since Roy Moore (R) cannot be legally replaced, the Birmingham News reports”that may be unlawful as well.”

“In fact, a 2014 memorandum written by Luther Strange, who was the Alabama Attorney General at the time, states that a political candidate may only get ‘one opportunity to run for an elected position in any given year.’  In addition, ‘it prevents a candidate from having his or her name placed on a general election ballot as an independent in the same year he or she lost in the party primary.'”

“The memo deals specifically with the names printed on the ballot. It remains unclear if the law prohibits a write-in campaign for Strange.”

However, an official at the secretary of state’s office tells the Washington Post that  says Strange would still be eligible.

Moore Leads By Double-Digits In Alabama

November 9, 2017 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Strategy Research poll in Alabama — conducted before news of allegations that Roy Moore (R) initiated sexual relations with a 14-year old girl — finds Moore leading Doug Jones (D) in the U.S. Senate race, 51% to 40%, with 9% undecided.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

November 9, 2017 at 3:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus. There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here. Maybe just a little bit unusual.”

— Alabama state auditor Jim Zeigler (R), quoted by the Washington Examiner, defending Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R), who is accused of initiating sexual relations with teenage girls.

Top Republicans Run Away from Roy Moore

November 9, 2017 at 3:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans moved swiftly to distance themselves from their party’s nominee for Senate in Alabama on Thursday after multiple women accused him of inappropriate sexual conduct when they were minors—including one who said he molested her at the age of 14 years,” the Daily Beast reports.

“Within hours of a Washington Post story reporting the allegations against Roy Moore, a former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, the Senate’s top GOP lawmakers called on Moore to withdraw from the race, albeit with a caveat.”

Weekly Standard: “The allegations spell potential disaster for Republicans in Alabama, as it is likely too late to field another candidate even if Moore were to step aside immediately.”

Axios has a running tally of statements from Republican lawmakers condemning Moore.

Bonus Quote of the Day

November 9, 2017 at 2:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying. He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of.”

— Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on Twitter.

Murkowski Raises Possibility of Write-In Challenger

November 9, 2017 at 2:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When asked about allegations that Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore initiated sexual relations with a 14-year old girl, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said, “I’m horrified and if this is true he needs to step down immediately.”

According to Axios, Murkowski also said she had spoken to Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) about becoming a write-in challenger in the Dec. 12 election.

Murkowski won her re-election in 2010 with a write-in campaign after she was defeated in the GOP primary.

Alabama Governor Declines to Endorse Moore

November 9, 2017 at 2:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) declined to officially endorse Roy Moore (R) in a special U.S. Senate election next month, according to the Alabama Political Reporter.

“Ivey’s refusal to endorse Moore caused a bit of a rift within the state’s Republican Party, which lobbied Ivey aggressively for an endorsement. With her popularity, particularly among the more moderate Republicans in the state, the ALGOP believed Ivey’s public backing could go a long way towards pushing hesitant voters to the polls.”
