Johnson Says Brain Tumor Caused McCain’s ‘No’ Vote

August 9, 2017 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said that he thinks that Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) brain tumor and the early morning hours may have affected the Arizona Republican’s no vote on the Senate bill to repeal Obamacare, CNN reports.

Said Johnson: “I’m not gonna speak for John McCain — he has a brain tumor right now — that vote occurred at 1:30 in the morning, some of that might have factored in.”

He quickly added: “Again, I-I-I don’t know exactly what — we really thought — and again I don’t want speak for any senator. I really thought he was going to vote yes to send that to conference at 10:30 at night. By about 1, 1:30, he voted no. So you have talk to John in terms what was on his mind.”

FBI Conducted Predawn Raid of Manafort’s Home

August 9, 2017 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“FBI agents raided the Alexandria home of President Trump’s former campaign chairman late last month, using a search warrant to seize documents and other materials,” the Washington Post reports.

“Federal agents appeared at Paul Manafort’s home without advance warning in the predawn hours of July 26, the day after he met voluntarily with the staff for the Senate Intelligence Committee.”

“The search warrant was wide-ranging and FBI agents working with special counsel Robert Mueller departed the home with various records… The search warrant indicates investigators may have argued to a federal judge they had reason to believe Manafort could not be trusted to turn over all records in response to a grand jury subpoena.”

New York Times: “Officials did not disclose where the search warrant was carried out. Mr. Manafort has homes in Virginia, Florida, New York City and the Hamptons.”

Diplomacy Is the Only Option for North Korea

August 9, 2017 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Despite President Trump’s vow to unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea, to most of the world he was merely imitating Kim Jong Un regular threats to the United States. And he came off just as unhinged.

Upset by Veto Override, LePage Wants to Hike Voting Age

August 9, 2017 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said that “he would propose increasing the age to vote or join the military to 21 to be consistent with a new law hiking the legal age to buy tobacco,” the Portland Press Herald reports.

“Unfortunately for LePage, two things would stand in his way: the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. military.”

“Six days after the Legislature overrode his veto, LePage was still venting on the radio and in a letter to lawmakers about what he views as their hypocrisy in raising the legal age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21 as a way to reduce Maine’s high youth smoking rates. While health groups cheered the new law, LePage called lawmakers ‘hypocrites’ and repeated his suggestion that perhaps 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds are also too young to cast ballots or choose to fight for the country.”

Trump Claims He’s Made Nuclear Arsenal Stronger

August 9, 2017 at 8:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweets this morning:

My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before… Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!

A reality check: Business Insider notes Trump’s first executive order was on the Affordable Care Act and that none of his orders in his first 100 days were on the nation’s nuclear arsenal.

And as the New York Times reports, the trillion dollar modernization of nuclear forces started under President Obama.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Ambitions Are Bigger Than You Think

August 9, 2017 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nick Bilton: “Over the years, I’ve spent some time with Zuckerberg, and I always got the feeling that he truly believed there wasn’t a problem that technology couldn’t solve… Lately, however, it appears that he has realized that there is another darker side to all of this technology.”

“Zuckerberg’s greatest challenge is that his profound wealth and success have made it far harder to understand what aggrieves most Americans. They aren’t just worried about what Trump will do to our country — or whether our planet is overheating, or if we’re playing a short-sighted game of chicken with the North Koreans, or if the Democrats (or Republicans) have any viable alternatives — but they are also worried about how they will be able to pay for their kids to go to college, or for winter clothes, or, in some cases, for the very next meal.”

“And yet, at the same time, his skills and experience have put him in a rare position to remedy so much of what ails us. As he evidenced at Harvard, Zuckerberg appears aware of these existential fears. But the big question that hangs over his head — and it’s the one that will determine not only whether he could win elected office, but also what kind of company Facebook becomes — is whether he can solve them. And if Zuckerberg’s actions say anything, that is exactly what he’s thinking about right now.”

Fox News Is Trump TV

August 9, 2017 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Max Boot: “Fox is ever more firmly entrenched in the official echo chamber of Trump Nation — and ever more divorced from reality. The National Enquirer, owned by Trump friend David Pecker, is Trump’s Pravda (its recent cover story: ‘Hillary Framed Trump Family! How she set up Donald’s son with dirt file emails!’). Breitbart, once chaired by Trump aide Stephen Bannon, is his Sputnik. Fox is the jewel in the crown — Trump’s own version of RT. ‘A lot of people wish President Trump was a dictator,’ Fox host Jesse Watters said on July 27. Perhaps at Fox News.”

“In fairness, there are solid, straight-down-the-middle reporters at Fox such as Chris Wallace, Bret Baier, and Shepherd Smith, and a few, increasingly marginalized, commentators such as Charles Krauthammer, Ralph Peters, and Steve Hayes who are critical of Trump. But their work is drowned out by the screeching chorus of Trump toadies that dominates Fox’s evening and morning schedule.”

GOP Majority May Be Too Strong for Trump to Break

August 9, 2017 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Washington Post got a sneak peak at the Almanac of American Politics 2018 and finds that “if you really want to know why the Republican majority in the House has been so strong, the answer lies in these six states: Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania — across the Rust Belt — and Virginia and Florida down South.”

“After the 2008 elections, those six states sent a combined 97 members to the House and Democrats held a 51-to-46 edge over Republicans among the lawmakers representing them. The disastrous 2010 showing for Democrats resulted in a net GOP gain of 21 seats in those states, 67 Republicans to 30 Democrats, and that margin has remained remarkably steady ever since. Today, after decennial reapportionment reduced those combined seats by two, there are now 64 Republicans to 31 Democrats in the House from those six states. It’s a bulwark created partly by Republican control of most of those states during the 2011 redrawing of the congressional districts —  and partly by the House Democrats’ inability to field candidates who appeal voters beyond the inner suburbs.”

The Most Dangerous Moment of Trump’s Presidency

August 9, 2017 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “The North Koreans did what the North Koreans do, and then President Trump…did what the North Koreans do, too. Trump’s new line is not just red – it’s fiery and furious and now closer than ever to being crossed, since the president’s warning applies to further threats, not just actions.”

“Perhaps it was a strategic attempt to speak in a manner Kim Jong Un would understand. The president said ‘fire and fury like the world has never seen’ and then repeated much of that phrase. But for all Trump’s inconsistencies, one major theme of his critique of his predecessor was on not following through on threats. This – ‘power, the likes of which this world has never seen before’ – is a doozy in that category.”

“We know, or we think we know, the president doesn’t like to convey weakness. We know almost nothing about what Kim Jong Un is thinking. In any event, this might be a good time to have a president who enjoys the trust of the American people and the lawmakers he serves with.”

Kelly Acts as Honest Broker in the White House

August 9, 2017 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “In an administration that has split into factions and been ravaged by ideological warfare, Kelly has asserted himself as a rare apolitical force. So far, he has left no discernible imprint on the White House’s philosophy, yet he has assumed control of its governance, running operations and the policy process in a way that Trump advisers hope will lead to tangible results.”

“Passing up opportunities to craft policies, Kelly has acted as a neutral mediator — encouraging key players to argue their points, ensuring proposals are fully vetted and then presenting the options to the president. He has assiduously avoided being tagged as a stalking horse for Bannon and his wing of hard-line nationalists or for senior adviser Jared Kushner and his coterie of business-friendly centrists. Rather, he has cultivated personal relationships with each of the competing spheres of the White House and pledged a fair hearing for all.”

Trump Hits New Low in Approval as Base Shrinks

August 9, 2017 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows President Trump’s approval rating slipping to 40%, the lowest point of his young presidency.

The percentage who approve strongly is also at a new low: just 18%.

“That fits with other surveys conducted over the past few weeks, all of which show Trump at or near the low-water marks for each pollster. And there is evidence Trump’s backslide has eroded some of his electoral base: The president has lost ground with Republicans and the independent voters that propelled him to victory.”

White House Copies Bush’s ‘Red Team’ for Tax Reform

August 9, 2017 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “A weekly, all-hands-on-deck meeting … usually held around a long wooden table in the Roosevelt Room steps away from the Oval Office, includes representatives of major power centers within the administration: the Office of American Innovation, led by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, the Treasury Department, headed by Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Vice President Mike Pence’s staff and Gary Cohn’s National Economic Council. Inside the White House, the assemblage is known as ‘The Red Team,’ a term used in former President George W. Bush’s administration for similar groups organized for major fights.”

“It’s taken from military and corporate parlance for a team that explicitly tests strategy from an opponent’s perspective. But the Trump team is using the label more broadly to convey a sense of urgency and close coordination.”

De Blasio Regularly Threatens Staffers

August 9, 2017 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio “is an imperious bully of a boss who threatens his underlings with dire punishment if they fail to meet his demands,” emails obtained by the New York Post reveal.

“‘What do I need to get you guys to follow a direct order? Do you need to experience consequences?’ he threatened in one 2015 diatribe. ‘I’m not raising this again: fix it, or I will [have] no choice but to find a way to penalize people. Not my preference, but I won’t have my instructions ignored.’”

“The emails show de Blasio blowing his top at nearly a dozen aides for failing to make sure phonetic versions of challenging words were included in his speeches and talking points.”

Guam Officials Downplay North Korea Threat

August 9, 2017 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Amid new threats of a ballistic missile strike on Guam from North Korea, Guam’s Homeland Security office Wednesday said there is no imminent threat to the island and the Marianas region,” the Pacific Daily News reports.

“Based on communications with military and federal officials, Gov. Eddie Calvo said there’s no change in the threat level to Guam, and he encouraged the public to remain calm.”

Mike Allen: “Of all the dumb things North Korea says, the idea of threatening Guam is one of the dumber.”

Said one insider: “Makes no sense. Attacking anywhere is a suicide mission for the regime. U.S. retaliation would be devastating and complete. Most Korea experts would tell you that if they are going to take their one shot, it will be at a more populated and emotionally connected target.”

Trump Endorses Strange In Alabama

August 9, 2017 at 7:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump is backing Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in next week’s special election saying on Twitter that he “has my complete and total endorsement.”

Pence’s Real Power Move

August 8, 2017 at 11:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The vice president’s office hasn’t been one of the competing power centers in President Trump’s faction-riven White House – but the recent arrival of Nick Ayers, the veteran campaign operative now serving as Mike Pence’s chief of staff, is starting to change that,” Politico reports.

“Among the reasons Ayers didn’t join the White House in January was a long-running feud with former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, who reportedly blocked his ascension to the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee in December and, according to one White House aide, worked to keep him out of the administration.”

“With the exception of political director Bill Stepien, a former Chris Christie aide, the political operation is now staffed almost entirely by Pence World operatives.”

Mueller Gave Up Millions to Work on Russia Probe

August 8, 2017 at 10:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Robert Mueller left a $3.4 million partner job in the white-shoe law firm WilmerHale… to serve as the special counsel overseeing the law enforcement investigation into whether the Kremlin and the Trump campaign coordinated to impact the 2016 election,” the Washington Post reports.

“Mueller’s public financial disclosure — along with those of seven members of his team — was released after a request from The Washington Post. The document offers a glimpse into who the special counsel and the lawyers he has hired have worked for, and where they have made and invested their money.”

“The documents show that several lawyers on the team, particularly those who came from the private sector, left behind substantial salaries to work on the Russia case.”
