Merkel Condemns Escalation of Rhetoric on North Korea

August 11, 2017 at 2:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned against “the escalation of rhetoric” in the wake of rising tensions between the U.S. and North Korea, adding that she didn’t see a military solution to the issue, The Hill reports.

Said Merkel: “I believe that, am firmly convinced that an escalation of rhetoric will not contribute to a solution of this conflict. I do not see a military solution to this conflict, rather I see continuous work, like we have seen in the U.N. Security Council with members with resolutions in view of North Korea, and above all very close cooperation with affected countries, especially the United States and China, but also South Korea, of course Japan.”

Trump Prefers Role as Chief Commentator

August 11, 2017 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s threats against North Korea “have highlighted as never before the tension between the president’s duties as chief executive and the role he often seems to prefer as the country’s highest-profile TV and Internet commentator,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The frequent disconnect between Trump’s words and actual policy has been visible for months. On major issues — healthcare, trade, taxes — as well as on more specific questions such as whether transgender Americans may serve in the military, Trump has made declarations that the rest of the administration and Congress have often ignored or sidetracked.”

“The current situation differs from those earlier examples because of the context and risk. In the fraught standoff with North Korea, where miscommunication or misunderstanding could trigger a devastating war, the question of how to react to Trump has taken on tremendous gravity.”

Quote of the Day

August 11, 2017 at 9:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We have two leaks. You have the leaks coming out of intelligence and various departments having to do with Syria, having to do with all sorts of different places, having to do frankly with North Korea. And those are very serious. And then, you have the leaks where people want to love me, and they’re all fighting for love. Those are little inner-White House leaks. They’re not very important. But actually, I’m somewhat honored by them.”

— President Trump, quoted by the Washington Examiner.

Republicans Face More Anger Over Health Care

August 11, 2017 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The long August congressional recess, which Republicans hoped would begin a conversation about tax reform and must-pass budget measures, has so far seen another round of angry town halls focused on President Trump and the stalled effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act,” the Washington Post reports.

“Over just one day, in three small towns along Georgia’s Atlantic coastline, Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) spent more than four hours answering 74 questions, many of them heated. Just three focused on tax reform; nearly half of all questions focused on health care… Carter’s town halls — he is hosting nine total, more than any member of the House — mirrored what was happening in swing and safe Republican districts across the country.”

The Memo that Led to the NSC Shakeup

August 11, 2017 at 9:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Foreign Policy obtained the disturbing memo written by ousted National Security Council staffer Rich Higgins which “provides a sweeping, if at times conspiratorial, view of what it describes as a multi-pronged attack on the Trump White House.”

Trump is being attacked, the memo says, because he represents “an existential threat to cultural Marxist memes that dominate the prevailing cultural narrative.” Those threatened by Trump include “‘deep state’ actors, globalists, bankers, Islamists, and establishment Republicans.”

Though not called out by name, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster “was among those described in the document as working against Trump.”

Trump Says U.S. Is ‘Locked and Loaded’

August 11, 2017 at 8:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump offered a fresh threat of force against North Korea, writing on Twitter that “military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded” if the regime of Kim Jong Un should “act unwisely,” the  Washington Post reports.

Trump’s latest warning came a day after he cautioned North Korea that “things will happen to them like they never thought possible” should the isolated country attack the United States or its allies.

Trump Hotel In D.C. Quickly Becomes Profitable

August 11, 2017 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s company turned a $1.97 million profit at its opulent Trump International Hotel so far in 2017, dramatically beating its expectations and giving the first hard numbers to critics who charge that Trump is profiting from his presidency,” the Washington Post reports.

“The Trump Organization had projected that it would lose $2.1 million during the first four months of 2017 as it established a new hotel and convention business in the nation’s capital, according to newly released federal documents. Instead the hotel, with its namesake in the White House down the street, is already turning a hefty profit and charging more for its rooms than most or all of the city’s other hotels.”

Majority Say It Was Good Obamacare Repeal Failed

August 11, 2017 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll finds that 60% of the public say it is a “good thing” that the Senate did not pass the bill that would have repealed and replaced the Affordable Care Act.

Key finding: 78% think President Trump and his administration should do what they can to make the current health care law work while just 17% say they should do what they can to make the law fail so they can replace it later.

Roy Moore Suggests America Is Evil

August 11, 2017 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When The Guardian told Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) that Ronald Reagan once called Russia “the focus of evil in the modern world,” Moore replied, “You could say that very well about America, couldn’t you?”

He added: “We promote a lot of bad things,” specifically citing same-sex marriage.

When the reporter suggested that’s an argument Vladimir Putin makes, Moore said, “Well, then maybe Putin is right. Maybe he’s more akin to me than I know.”

China Would Stay Neutral If North Korea Attacks U.S.

August 11, 2017 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Chinese state-run newspaper said that “if North Korea launches an attack that threatens the United States then China should stay neutral, but if the United States attacks first and tries to overthrow North Korea’s government China will stop them,” Reuters reports.

Obama Will Re-Emerge This Fall

August 11, 2017 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Obama “will re-emerge on the national scene this fall, though Democrats expect him to do so with caution,” The Hill reports.

“Aides will huddle with Obama in the coming weeks to plot out what shape the former president’s fall schedule will take. Advisers close to him say that while he will play an active role in helping his party rebuild, much of his work will be behind the scenes.”

“In recent months, Obama has played a larger behind the scenes role than was publicly known.”

Investigators Want to Talk to Trump’s Secretary

August 11, 2017 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional investigators want to question President Donald Trump’s longtime personal secretary as part of their ongoing probe into a controversial meeting between Trump campaign officials and a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton,” ABC News reports.

“Rhona Graff, a senior vice president at the Trump Organization who has worked at Trump Tower for nearly 30 years, has acted as a gatekeeper to Trump. She remains a point of contact for the sprawling universe of Trump associates, politicians, reporters and others seeking Trump’s time and attention, even now that he’s in the White House.”

Guam Prepares for Possible Missile Threat

August 11, 2017 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Guam Homeland Security issued a new fact sheet, which the agency says will help residents prepare for an imminent missile threat, the Pacific Daily News reports.

The advice includes tips such as: “Do not look at the flash or fireball – It can blind you” and “Take cover behind anything that might offer protection.”

Also: “Lie flat on the ground and cover your head. If the explosion is some distance away, it could take 30 seconds or more for the blast wave to hit.”

Trump Uncaged

August 11, 2017 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Midway through President Trump’s second media availability in a single afternoon here Thursday, his press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, held up a sign signaling to the boss that it was time to drop the curtain on the show. ‘One more question,’ it read. The president either did not see her plea or opted to disregard it, because he kept answering questions — for 20 minutes straight, after having already fielded them for seven minutes in the earlier session.”

“Engaging with people — journalists, advisers, friends and even foes — is Trump’s lifeblood. His Oval Office has felt like a busy train station, with people breezing in and out to share a juicy tidbit or to solicit the president’s opinion on a pressing issue or to chew over something in the news. He likes to watch cable television news shows with other people, sometimes only through the phone.”

Said one Trump confidant: “This is what General Kelly will learn very quickly, which is when you put this guy in a cage and think you’re controlling him, things like this happen.”
