A Middle Finger to the World

June 2, 2017 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Grunwald: “Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement was not really about the climate. And despite his overheated rhetoric about the ‘tremendous’ and ‘draconian’ burdens the deal would impose on the U.S. economy, Trump’s decision wasn’t really about that, either. America’s commitments under the Paris deal, like those of the other 194 cooperating nations, were voluntary. So those burdens were imaginary.”

“No, Trump’s abrupt withdrawal from this carefully crafted multilateral compromise was a diplomatic and political slap: it was about extending a middle finger to the world, while reminding his base that he shares its resentments of fancy-pants elites and smarty-pants scientists and tree-hugging squishes who look down on real Americans who drill for oil and dig for coal. He was thrusting the United States into the role of global renegade, rejecting not only the scientific consensus about climate but the international consensus for action, joining only Syria and Nicaragua (which wanted an even greener deal) in refusing to help the community of nations address a planetary problem.”

“Congress doesn’t seem willing to pay for Trump’s border wall—and Mexico certainly isn’t—so rejecting the Paris deal was an easier way to express his Fortress America themes without having to pass legislation.”

Baldwin Helps Raise $5 Million for New Jersey Democrats

June 2, 2017 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Alec Baldwin, the actor whose impersonations of President Trump has made Saturday Night Live must-see TV for liberals and political junkies, helped raise $5.1 million Thursday night for New Jersey Democrats,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

“That’s believed to be the most money ever raised by either party at a single event in state history.”

Trump Still Consulting Fox News Host

June 2, 2017 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle — who was once tipped to be taking Sean Spicer’s press secretary job — told the Daily Mail that Donald Trump called her before making the public announcement to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Guilfoyle defended the president’s decision to pull out of the climate accord, calling it a “brave and courageous thing.”

U.S. Job Market Falters

June 2, 2017 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The U.S. economy added 138,000 jobs in May, the New York Times reports. Economists had expected a gain of about 185,000 jobs.

The unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent, the lowest since 2001.

The Political Risks of Loathing Trump

June 2, 2017 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “Polls show President Trump’s approval numbers languishing around 40 percent, while the anger and intensity of the Democratic base is rising and the Republican base remains pretty complacent, not full of fight as it was during the Obama years.”

“That’s a lot for Democrats and liberals to be excited about, but both groups would be well advised to consider what happened to the Republican Party and the conservative movement in an analogous time, after President Obama was elected. Tea-party rallies were boisterous and often unruly, town meetings of Democratic lawmakers drew protesters and sometimes turned into shout-fests, and conservative-media ratings soared. Many elements of the Obama agenda became enormously unpopular, and the Republican Party took a sharp turn toward the right and away from established party power centers. Obama effectively radicalized the Republican Party and the conservative movement to the point that the tea party took over both the GOP and right-of-center politics. The potential for the Democratic Party and the Left behaving the same way in the opposite direction is very real.”

Running Against Trump Won’t Be Enough In 2018

June 2, 2017 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Wilson: “Outside of the GOP base, Trump is about as popular as kidney stones. However, the Democratic Party is ignoring a lesson the GOP learned to its detriment during the Clinton impeachment—an obliviously guilty serial liar half the country hates only gets them so far. Nationalizing an election is trickier than they think.”

“The Democrats can’t beat something with nothing, and almost any plan beats no plan every time. So far, Democratic Party Chair Tom Perez seems to have little to offer as a planner, and while Democratic recruiting looks strong, there are already a lot of jokers in the deck running the NY/LA/SF. Democrats will need more than ‘Trump sucks’ unless the indictments start coming down, and even then, they’d be wise to have a richer issue portfolio, more diverse (that’s code for ‘moderate’) candidates, and something beyond the Bernie-Warren economic message.”

GOP Senator Says Deal on Health Care Unlikely

June 2, 2017 at 7:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) said that the Senate “probably won’t reach a deal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act when it returns from a recess next week, in a stark assessment of the party’s health-care prospects,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Burr: “It’s unlikely that we will get a health-care deal.”

He added that the House-passed GOP health plan was “dead on arrival,” and that “I don’t see a comprehensive health-care plan this year.”

Paris Deal Isn’t About Climate for Trump

June 2, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “The most revealing moment of President Trump’s announcement that he is withdrawing from the Paris climate deal came in an off-hand response of a White House official after Trump’s speech. Asked whether Trump thinks climate change is real, the official said: ‘Can we stay on topic?'”

“To the Trump administration, the Paris climate deal has nothing to do with climate change. It’s an economic issue. To Trump, withdrawing from the accord represents a triumph of populist America over greedy globalism.”

“Unlike other policy goals (healthcare and tax reform) Trump isn’t even acknowledging climate change is a problem. That makes his overtures about being open to renegotiate and re-enter the Paris deal suspect.”

CIA Takes Harder Line Against Iran

June 2, 2017 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He is known as the Dark Prince or Ayatollah Mike, nicknames he earned as the Central Intelligence Agency officer who oversaw the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the American drone strike campaign that killed thousands of Islamist militants and hundreds of civilians,” the New York Times reports.

“Now the official, Michael D’Andrea, has a new job. He is running the C.I.A.’s Iran operations, according to current and former intelligence officials, an appointment that is the first major sign that the Trump administration is invoking the hard line the president took against Iran during his campaign.”

Trump Appeals Travel Ban to the Supreme Court

June 1, 2017 at 11:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration Thursday night asked the Supreme Court to reinstate its travel ban blocking entry from six Muslim-majority countries,” CNN reports.

“In its filing, the administration asked the nine justices to consider the legality of President Trump’s executive order, a move that appeals a ruling by the 4th Circuit that upheld a nationwide halt to the ban.”

Jerry Brown Defies Trump on the World Stage

June 1, 2017 at 11:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For the past two years, California Gov. Jerry Brown has been aggressively recruiting other state and local governments to sign on to their own, sub-national climate pact,” Politico reports.

“But that campaign has taken new urgency under President Trump, who announced Thursday that he’ll withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. It’s a reflection of the roiling conflict between the president and the nation’s most populous state, but also the ambition of a governor who, after a lifetime in politics, is seizing an unexpected opening on an international stage.”

Washington Post: U.S. states and major companies break with Trump’s decision to exit climate deal.

Price’s Foreign Lobbying Helped His Portfolio

June 1, 2017 at 11:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Before he was named Trump’s health secretary, Tom Price took a congressional trip to Australia and pressed officials to extend protections for drug companies in an international trade agreement,” ProPublica reports.

“Price’s lobbying abroad, which has not previously been reported, is another example of how his work in Congress could have benefitted his investment portfolio. He traded hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of shares in health-related companies while taking action on legislation and regulations affecting the industry. ProPublica previously reported that Price’s stock trades are said to be under investigation by federal prosecutors.”

Trump Hands China a Chance for Global Leadership

June 1, 2017 at 11:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In pulling out of the Paris climate accord, Mr. Trump has created a vacuum of global leadership that presents ripe opportunities to allies and adversaries alike to reorder the world’s power structure. His decision is perhaps the greatest strategic gift to the Chinese, who are eager to fill the void that Washington is leaving around the world on everything from setting the rules of trade and environmental standards to financing the infrastructure projects that give Beijing vast influence.”

“Mr. Trump’s remarks in the Rose Garden on Thursday were also a retreat from leadership on the one issue, climate change, that unified America’s European allies, its rising superpower competitor in the Pacific, and even some of its adversaries, including Iran.”

Foreign Policy: In dumping the Paris accord, Trump cedes the energy future to China.

House Intelligence Committee Puts Interviews on Hold

June 1, 2017 at 10:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The embattled House investigation into Russia’s election meddling is once again beset by sniping and strategy disagreements, with Democrats now blocking key witness interviews,” Politico reports.

“The House Intelligence Committee, which is exploring allegations of collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign, was set to interview 10 witnesses this month. But the committee has put the interviews on hold after the panel’s top Democrat objected, the two sources said. A third source said the panel wasn’t yet ready to conduct the interviews, since some of the witnesses have not fully complied with the committee’s requests for documents.”

Clinton Is Wrong to Blame the DNC

June 1, 2017 at 9:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “Of all the reasons Hillary Clinton thinks she lost the 2016 election to President Trump, the least among them was the state of the Democratic National Committee. That it was a mess long before she became a candidate was well known. That she did nothing about it sooner was her own mistake. But had she done so, it probably would have made no difference in the outcome.”

“Obama’s two campaigns were built largely separate from the DNC. Data produced by Obama for America and its various other names was proprietary and not readily shared with the party… All this was well known to Clinton’s 2016 campaign team, if not to her personally. The DNC was a problem that no one wanted to address.”

Kushner Story Doesn’t Match What Russian Bank Says

June 1, 2017 at 6:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House and a Russian state-owned bank have very different explanations for why the bank’s chief executive and Jared Kushner held a secret meeting during the presidential transition in December,” the Washington Post reports.

“The bank maintained this week that the session was held as part of a new business strategy and was conducted with Kushner in his role as the head of his family’s real estate business. The White House says the meeting was unrelated to business and was one of many diplomatic encounters the soon-to-be presidential adviser was holding ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration.”

“The contradiction is deepening confusion over Kushner’s interactions with the Russians as the president’s son-in-law emerges as a key figure in the FBI’s investigation into potential coordination between Moscow and the Trump team.”

Special Election in Georgia Remains Very Tight

June 1, 2017 at 6:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new WSB-TV poll in Georgia’s 6th congressional district shows Jon Ossoff (D) barely leading Karen Handel, 49% to 48%.

Just 3% were undecided, “a sign of the total saturation of the race for the suburban Atlanta district.”

Historians Will Be Baffled by Our Times

June 1, 2017 at 5:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ezra Klein: “The world is currently on track for catastrophic levels of global warming. Destroying one of our last best chances to set a different path might prove Trump’s most consequential, and disastrous, legacy.”

“If it does, historians living in the altered climate of 2050 will look back on the 2016 campaign in horror. As they read the coverage, they will find a polity that knew of the danger and importance of climate change, but preferred to talk about Hillary Clinton’s emails instead. Indeed, as Media Matters documents, there was less coverage of climate change in the 2016 election than in the 2014, 2012, or 2010 elections… Meanwhile, networks’ flagship news shows devoted more coverage to Clinton’s emails than to every policy issue combined.”

“We often look back on past generations and wonder about their cruelty, their blithe dismissal of actions that seems to us, now, to be obviously moral, obviously right. But imagine how future generations will look back on us. We knew all we needed to know about how climate change would likely affect our descendants, and we decided to let it happen anyway.”
