Judge Orders More Georgia Ballots Counted

November 14, 2018 · 11:32 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“A federal judge has ruled that Georgia counties must count absentee ballots even if the voter’s date of birth is incorrect or missing, and he is preventing the state from finalizing election results until that happens,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Although U.S. District Judge Steve Jones agreed with the Georgia Democratic Party and Stacey Abrams’ campaign on this issue, he ruled against them on two others. He will not require counties to accept absentee ballots with incorrect residence addresses or to accept provisional ballots cast by people who attempted to vote in a different county than where they are registered to vote.”

“A federal judge on Monday ordered election officials to review thousands of provisional ballots that haven’t been counted in Georgia’s close election for governor,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The court decision comes as votes are still being counted in the race for governor between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp. Abrams trails Kemp and would need to gain more than 20,000 additional votes to force a runoff election.”

Associated Press: “He aggressively deleted inactive voters from registration rolls, enforced an “exact match” policy that could have prevented thousands of Georgians from registering to vote and launched an investigation that disrupted a major voter registration drive.”

“Now Republican Brian Kemp is declaring himself the victor in Georgia’s race for governor, a race so close that even marginal differences in voting and turnout could make the difference in determining whether the race goes to a runoff.”

Abrams Presses for a Runoff In Georgia

November 9, 2018 · 8:39 am ET · Leave a Comment

Stacey Abrams is not conceding Georgia’s governor’s race, “hopeful that a trove of provisional ballots and other votes not yet recorded could be enough to force the tight race into a runoff,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Her campaign unveiled a litigation team poised to take the fight to the courts as it continues a hunt for an additional 25,632 Abrams votes that will push the race into runoff territory.”

Brian Kemp’s (R) office “has said there are roughly 25,000 outstanding provisional and absentee ballots — making his lead virtually insurmountable — and on Thursday he released for the first time a detailed accounting of where each was cast.”

Kemp Resigns as Georgia Secretary of State

November 8, 2018 · 10:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp (R) says he is resigning as secretary of state, the AP reports.

Kemp declared victory in the governor’s race because he claims it isn’t possible for opponent Stacey Abrams (D) to pick up enough votes to force a runoff. But Abrams says there are still enough uncounted votes to force a Dec. 4 runoff and that they need to pick up about 15,000 votes to do so.

Stacey Abrams Still Hoping for a Runoff

November 7, 2018 · 12:10 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Stacey Abrams, the Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, continued Wednesday to hold out hope for a runoff with Republican Brian Kemp, who saw his lead shrink a bit overnight, but was still ahead with more than 50 percent of the vote,” the Washington Post reports.

“Kemp was just over 15,000 votes above the threshold to avoid a runoff, said Lauren Groh-Wargo, Abrams’s campaign manager, who estimates there are at least that many outstanding mail-in ballots that have yet to be counted in Democratic-leaning counties.”

Georgia Officials Patched Security Holes That ‘Didn’t Exist’

November 5, 2018 · 4:51 pm ET · Leave a Comment

ProPublica found that Georgia officials were busily fixing problems with its voter registration just hours after the office of Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the Republican candidate for governor, had insisted the system was secure.

“Security experts frown on making such seemingly ad hoc changes close to major events, such as an election, because they can create unforeseen problems when made so quickly.”

Voting Machine Glitches Roil Texas and Georgia Races

“Glitchy paperless voting machines are affecting an untold number of early voting ballots in Texas and Georgia, raising the specter that two of the most closely watched races could be marred by questions about whether the vote count is accurate,” Politico reports.

“Civil rights groups and voters in both states have filed complaints alleging that the ATM-style touchscreen machines inexplicably deleted some people’s votes for Democratic candidates or switched them to Republican votes.”

Kemp and Abrams Prepare for Possible Runoff

November 5, 2018 · 7:13 am ET · Leave a Comment

“As voters and campaigns around the country get ready for Tuesday’s climactic midterm elections, the candidates for governor of Georgia are already preparing for four weeks of overtime… Under Georgia law, if no general election candidate secures a majority, the top two finishers advance to a runoff, which would take place on December 4 for this year’s governor’s race,” Politico reports.

“There has never been a general election runoff for governor in Georgia. But while both Abrams and Kemp have stubbornly maintained that they are focused on winning outright on Tuesday, behind the scenes, their campaigns are already laying groundwork for an extra 28 days on the trail — assembling legal teams for potential legal fights over Tuesday’s vote and stockpiling money to jumpstart a runoff campaign.”

Kemp Engaged in Banana-Republic Voter Manipulation

November 4, 2018 · 5:13 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “In perhaps the most outrageous example of election administration partisanship in the modern era, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who is running for governor while simultaneously in charge of the state’s elections, has accused the Democratic Party without evidence of hacking into the state’s voter database. He plastered a headline about it on the Secretary of State’s website, which thousands of voters use to get information about voting on election day.”

“It’s just the latest in a series of partisan moves by Kemp, who has held up more than 50,000 voter registrations for inconsistencies as small as a missing hyphen, fought rules to give voters a chance to prove their identity when their absentee ballot applications are rejected for a lack of a signature match, and been aggressive in prosecuting those who have done nothing more than try to help those in need of assistance in casting ballots.”

“But the latest appalling move by Kemp to publicly accuse the Democrats of hacking without evidence is even worse than that: Kemp has been one of the few state election officials to refuse help from the federal Department of Homeland Security to deter foreign and domestic hacking of voter registration databases.”

Kemp Accuses Georgia Democrats of Hacking

“Just two days before the election, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office launched an investigation Sunday into the Democratic Party after an alleged attempt to hack the state’s voter registration system,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Kemp, who is the Republican candidate for governor on Tuesday’s ballot, didn’t provide any evidence of hacking when his office announced the probe. He faces Democrat Stacey Abrams in the election.”

“The Democratic Party of Georgia called the allegation  ‘100 percent false’ and ‘an abuse of power’ by Kemp’s office.”
