Is Jeb Bush Losing the Invisible Primary?

April 28, 2015 · 1:21 pm ET · 27 Comments

FiveThirtyEight: “But money is unlikely to be Bush’s problem in this campaign, and cash may be a less valuable resource than another sort of currency in which he is lacking: the support of influential Republicans, like current senators and governors, especially those who publicly endorse a candidate. Historically, these endorsements have been the best proxy for support in the ‘invisible primary’ and a leading indicator for which candidates may emerge victorious through the rough-and-tumble nomination race.”

“So far, Bush has won very few endorsements. No current Republican senators or governors have endorsed him, and only five members of the House of Representatives have done so, all from his home state of Florida.”

Walker Plan Cedes Early Momentum to Bush

April 27, 2015 · 12:57 pm ET · 48 Comments

Gov. Scott Walker (R) “has put campaign plans in motion that cede early momentum to his chief rival, Jeb Bush, in favor of beating Mr. Bush and other opponents with a long-game strategy designed to achieve financial and political success next winter,” the New York Times reports.

“The strategy, described in interviews with advisers and donors to Mr. Walker, is an acknowledgment that despite leading in some early polls and earning praise from party kingmakers, Mr. Walker faces serious obstacles — money, readiness, stature — to becoming his party’s standard-bearer… Advisers said that Mr. Walker, conceding that he has no hope of raising more than Mr. Bush this spring and summer, is devoting considerable time instead to addressing a weakness that could derail him with a single gaffe no matter how much some donors love him: his lack of depth on issues facing a president, especially national security.”

Quote of the Day

“I don’t think you need to spend $1 billion to be elected president of the United States in 2016. I don’t think it’s necessary if you run the right kind of campaign, you don’t need to have these massive amounts of money to spend.”

— Jeb Bush, quoted by Bloomberg.

Bush Tells Donors They’ve Set Fundraising Record

April 27, 2015 · 7:00 am ET · 11 Comments

Jeb Bush “told about 350 of the top donors to his super PAC on Sunday evening that the organization has raised more money in its first 100 days than any other Republican operation in modern history,” the Washington Post reports.

“Bush did not say how much had been raised, but senior Republicans said they think his super PAC, Right to Rise, is on track to collect $100 million by the end of May. Those who heard Bush speak said it signals that he and his team are confident that they’ve amassed a sizable political fortune that will help bankroll his fledgling presidential aspirations.”

Bush Said He Wouldn’t Make Same Mistakes as Romney

April 24, 2015 · 8:38 am ET · 35 Comments

Jeb Bush said he “would not make the same mistakes as Mitt Romney during a private event in New York on Thursday, saying the 2012 Republican nominee was unable to connect with voters in a genuine way,” the Washington Free Beacon reports.

Said Bush: “He made it about a referendum on the president’s policies rather than about himself. He didn’t show his heart. He didn’t send a signal that he cared about people, when he did.”

Jeb Bush Is On a Diet

April 24, 2015 · 6:43 am ET · 12 Comments

New York Times: “As he prepares to challenge an almost universally younger and svelter field of Republican rivals, Mr. Bush has adopted a drastic weight-loss program that is melting away pounds at a staggering rate even as it inflicts an unhappy toll: regular bouts of dietary crankiness.”

“The monthslong experiment in deprivation — little to no starch, dairy or refined sugar, in adherence to the in-vogue Paleo diet — may seem extreme. But unlike a mountain-biking brother, and his still-trim nonagenarian father, Mr. Bush has long struggled to keep the pounds away, trying everything from climbing 22 flights of stairs a day to joining the low-carb Atkins craze of the early 2000s.”

Clinton Cash Author Is Targeting Bush Next

Peter Schweizer, author of Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich, tells Businessweek he’s turning his focus to Jeb Bush.

Said Schweizer: “What we’re doing is a drill-down investigation of Jeb’s finances similar to what we did with the Clintons in terms of looking at financial dealings, cronyism, who he’s been involved with. We’ve found some interesting things.”

Bush Will Delegate Many Functions to Super PAC

April 21, 2015 · 6:59 am ET · 16 Comments

Jeb Bush “is preparing to embark on an experiment in presidential politics: delegating many of the nuts-and-bolts tasks of seeking the White House to a separate political organization that can raise unlimited amounts of campaign cash,” the AP reports.

“Should Bush move ahead as his team intends, it is possible that for the first time a super PAC created to support a single candidate would spend more than the candidate’s campaign itself — at least through the primaries. Some of Bush’s donors believe that to be more than likely.”

National Journal reports GOP strategist Mike Murphy will forgo a top position with the campaign to run Bush’s super PAC instead.

Top Christie Adviser Defects to Bush Camp

April 20, 2015 · 9:35 pm ET · 11 Comments

Joseph Kyrillos, who chaired Gov. Chris Christie’s 2009 gubernatorial campaign and ushered his agenda through a Democratic-controlled legislature, is backing Jeb Bush in the GOP presidential race with a $10,000 donation, according to the Washington Post.

“The defection of Kyrillos to Bush’s camp is a blow to Christie, who places a premium on loyalty and had hoped to keep his network of allies in New Jersey with him, should he decide to seek the Republican nomination.”

New Hampshire Is Key to Bush

April 18, 2015 · 7:00 am ET · 12 Comments

Los Angeles Times: “For Jeb Bush, New Hampshire serves as a linchpin of his strategy. Sandwiched between contests in Iowa and South Carolina that draw large numbers of evangelical voters, New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary has served as a firewall of sorts for mainstream, center-right candidates such as Bush. The last two Republican nominees — Mitt Romney in 2012 and John McCain in 2008 — both came in first place here after losing the Iowa caucuses to more socially conservative rivals.”

Jeb Bush is the latest GOP presidential candidate to book a major speaking engagement at Liberty University, CNN reports.

“The former Florida governor will deliver the school’s May 9 commencement, handing him the same audience of students at the university founded by Southern Baptist pastor Jerry Falwell that Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas had when he launched his presidential campaign in March.”

Rubio and Bush Share a Flight

April 11, 2015 · 5:30 am ET · 5 Comments

“In a sign of how literally close they are, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio sat next to each other on the same Friday night flight to Miami from Nashville, where they separately spoke at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention,” Politico reports.

“The coincidental encounter had a just-like-old-times feel to it, with the one-time mentor and one-time protégé talking like the friends they are – a stark contrast to the tensions being expressed by their top supporters.”

A Foreign Policy Split Inside Bush’s Campaign

April 8, 2015 · 7:41 am ET · 7 Comments

“Two prominent factions within the Republican foreign policy establishment are fighting for control over who will help guide former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush‘s policy positions as he gears up for a campaign for the presidency,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“More hawkish Republicans — represented by the prominent, interventionist neoconservatives who populated the ranks of the George W. Bush administration — have repeatedly raised concerns about the more pragmatic foreign policy team being assembled around Mr. Bush.”
