Priebus Sees a Much-Needed Reprieve

May 5, 2017 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The Republican health care overhaul might never become law, but it has already changed the life of one American: Reince Priebus, who knew it was his best and perhaps last hope of becoming an empowered White House chief of staff.”

“It is unlikely that Mr. Priebus — roundly regarded as a steady party leader but one of the least powerful White House chiefs of staff ever — would have been fired had the second repeal-and-replace plan not passed the House on Thursday. But he viewed it as a personal make-or-break moment, and interviews with two dozen West Wing aides and Republican officials confirmed that another big loss on health care would probably have been an unrecoverable blow to an already weakened Mr. Priebus.”

A Few Thoughts on Stephen Bannon

February 23, 2017 at 4:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The joint appearance of Stephen Bannon and Reince Priebus at CPAC was extremely interesting. Both men tried hard to make the case that despite seeming like a political odd couple they actually represent a happy marriage of opposite wings of the Republican Party. At one point Priebus even praised Bannon as “a very dear friend,” while Bannon in turn said the White House chief of staff was “indefatigable.”

Priebus Denies Contacts with Russia During Campaign

February 19, 2017 at 11:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus “flatly denied any involvement between President Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russian officials,” Politico reports.

“Priebus said he’s spoken with high-level intelligence officials in Washington who have instructed him that no such involvement occurred.”

Priebus Says Trump Serious About Media as the Enemy

February 18, 2017 at 7:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus advised Americans to take President Trump’s attacks on the media “seriously,” following the president’s denunciations of the press as the “enemy,” CBS News reports.

Said Priebus: “I do think it’s a problem. And I think that the media needs to, in some cases — not every case, John — but in some cases really needs to get its act together.”

Now Priebus and Tillerson Are Feuding

February 15, 2017 at 11:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Many of the U.S. ambassadorships remain unfilled, a result of a standoff between Mr. Tillerson and Mr. Priebus, the chief of staff, said people familiar with the process.”

“Mr. Trump had told Mr. Tillerson he would have a say in appointing some key ambassadorships, including Canada and Switzerland, those people said. Mr. Priebus subsequently got the president to approve names for those positions—including several top donors to the RNC—without consulting the secretary of state, which angered Mr. Tillerson.”

“The infighting has sown growing insecurity among Mr. Priebus and his top aides.”

Trump Already Talking About Replacing Priebus

February 13, 2017 at 6:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “After watching Trump clean house several times during the campaign, everyone feels on thin ice. This naturally breeds insecurity, ass-covering and endless leaking. Those who don’t fear for their hide are busy gaming out how they rise when someone falls. Trump feeds all of this. It’s why an insider describes the White House hierarchy as ‘fragile.'”

Said one person close to the White House: “These people are insecure because Trump does not respect them. He does not because they have not made any money. He respects Stephen Bannon and Gary Cohn because they are financially successful.”

“Trump has already consulted friends about his next chief of staff. I’m told that to avoid admitting error, Trump plans a smooth transition from Priebus, perhaps by making him a Cabinet secretary!”

Playbook: “In the next few days, we’ll continue to hear a bunch of new names for chief of staff. Replacing Reince right now would be a sure sign of turmoil. But D.C. insiders have been placing bets since inauguration on which senior staff member would be out first. Will it be Reince?”

Trump Friend Slams Priebus

February 12, 2017 at 12:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s friend Christopher Ruddy appeared on CNN and attacked White House chief of staff Reince Priebus as weak and incompetent.

Said Ruddy: “The White House is showing not the amount of order that we need to see. I think there’s a lot of weakness coming out of the chief of staff. I think Reince Priebus, good guy, well intentioned, but he clearly doesn’t know how the federal agencies work. He doesn’t have a really good system. He doesn’t know how the communications flow… the President’s not getting the back-up he needs in the operation of the White House and sometimes the push back he needs to have with a stronger… White House chief of staff.”

Jonathan Swan has the backstory: “Ruddy tweeted yesterday that he joined Trump for a drink the day before after the Abe dinner (Trump had a diet Coke, Ruddy had a scotch), and that the 2 talked for half-an-hour. Two days later Ruddy is publicly attacking Priebus. We now have a public glimpse into some of the advice Trump is getting privately. And people who work with Trump are keenly aware of his history of making major staff changes when he’s not happy with how things are going.”

Pillow Talk in the White House

February 9, 2017 at 9:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Bannon and Reince Priebus tried to prove to New York magazine that they’re friends:

“I’m quite aggressive, and Reince is a calming influence on hey — bang bang bang, here’s how we ought to think about doing that,” Bannon said, explaining how their personal styles complement each other.

“We talk a lot, pretty much all day long,” Priebus said. “And then we communicate at night —”

“Until we fall asleep,” Bannon interjected with a laugh.

Priebus cut in, “Until somebody falls asleep … You fell asleep last night.”

“I did,” Bannon said.

“I think, like, a quarter to 11,” Priebus added.

“I did,” Bannon said.

“He became unresponsive,” Priebus laughed.

Priebus Tasked with Bringing Order to White House

January 18, 2017 at 7:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In a city bracing for convulsive change, Mr. Priebus has emerged as an unlikely symbol of stability, someone who they hope will domesticate the new president and transform his storm-the-gates campaign into a normal, functional White House that can ‘make America sane again,’ in a phrase making the rounds this week among congressional Republicans.”

“Mr. Priebus has had a spotty record on cabinet picks, pushing hard for the long-shot nomination of former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York as secretary of state. But Mr. Priebus has had a relatively free hand to pick the operational staff that handles the day-to-day operations of every White House, while selling Mr. Trump on Sean Spicer, the pugnacious R.N.C. spokesman, for White House press secretary.”

Priebus Faces Daunting Task In Trump White House

January 2, 2017 at 8:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The role in Trump’s inner sanctum is, by some measures, a surprising spot for Priebus. After the party’s 2012 defeat, the party chairman presided over an autopsy report that called for courting minorities by, among other things, embracing looser immigration laws. Trump, who campaigned on building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and endorsed mass deportations, effectively rejected the recommendation — and won anyway.”

“The power-sharing dynamic between Priebus and his new colleagues looks worrisome to those who have had Priebus’s title in prior administrations. Some predict flatly that it will not work.”

Priebus Promises Changes to Press Briefings

December 14, 2016 at 1:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told Hugh Hewitt that major changes could be in store for White House press briefings under the Trump administration.

Said Priebus: “Look, I think that many things have to change, and I think that it’s important that we look at all of those traditions that are great, but quite frankly, as you know, don’t really make news. And you know, even looking at things like the daily White House briefing from the press secretary, I mean, there’s a lot of different ways that things can be done, and I can assure you we’re looking at that.”

He added: “The point of all of this conversation is that the traditions, while some of them are great, I think it’s time to revisit a lot of these things that have been done in the White House and I can assure you that change is going to happen, even on things that might seem boring like this topic, but also change as far as how we’re going to approach tax reform, the American worker, how we protect them and business all at the same time why skyrocketing our economy.”

Priebus Urged Trump to Drop Out After Video

December 8, 2016 at 1:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “Some Trump advisers are dismayed by Priebus’s influence because they question the Washington insider’s loyalty to the president-elect. Three sources told me that shortly after the Access Hollywood tape leaked in early October, Priebus went to Trump’s penthouse and advised the candidate to get out of the race. Priebus told Trump that if he didn’t, he ‘will go down with a worse election loss than Barry Goldwater’s.'”

Priebus Built the Machine Trump Used to Win

November 10, 2016 at 6:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The cast of characters behind Donald Trump changed repeatedly during the course of his improbable presidential campaign as the rookie candidate struggled to strike the balance between Republican politician and anti-establishment crusader, but one person remained constant: Reince Priebus.”

“And now, the Republican National Committee chairman, whose efforts to rein in Trump at times made him the butt of jokes, is getting a lot of the credit for helping the president-elect pull off the most shocking upset in modern political history.”

Priebus Favored for Another Term as RNC Chief

August 22, 2016 at 8:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is teetering on the brink of a historic defeat, but Republican National Committee officials are poised to reward the party’s chairman Reince Priebus with another term,” Politico reports.

“Priebus is soliciting support for January’s chairmanship election — leaving some insiders with the impression that he is preparing for a future with the party after a Trump loss.”

Priebus Mulls Another Term as RNC Chairman

August 16, 2016 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It’s a move that would come as a surprise to many. The 44-year-old Priebus, who was first elected in 2011, had led many to believe he would be finished with the high-profile job following a rambunctious campaign season — one that at times has resulted in fierce criticism of Priebus and the committee he leads. Already, several would-be successors, including former Silicon Valley executive Carly Fiorina, have begun de facto campaigns for the chairmanship.”

“But in recent weeks, Priebus has begun telling friends and allies that he’s seriously considering running for reelection.”
