Oprah for President?

January 8, 2018 at 7:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Oprah Winfrey for president was something of a running theme throughout the Golden Globes on Sunday, beginning with Seth Meyers’ opening monologue. He jokingly forbade Winfrey from considering the presidency. But the trend picked up steam as the night unfolded, particularly after Winfrey’s impassioned acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“It didn’t take long for social media, and celebs in particular, to rally Winfrey for the job, including inside the ceremony.”

Said Winfrey’s longtime partner Stedman Graham: “It’s up to the people. She would absolutely do it.”

Playbook: “She has said she’ll never run for public office but, why not? We bet she has pretty high approval ratings among, well, everyone. She’s universally known. She’d raise the money quite easily. She’s a billionaire, so she could say she has business chops. Imagine Donald Trump talking trash about Oprah! Quite frankly, there isn’t any clear Democratic favorite that would clear the field at the moment. Don’t count someone like her out.”

Warren Makes Moves to Prepare for 2020 Run

January 2, 2018 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elizabeth Warren has spent the past year making a series of below-the-radar moves that would put her in prime position to run for president in 2020 if she decides to,” Politico reports.

“The liberal icon and Republican bete noire has amassed more money in her campaign war chest than nearly any senator in modern history, groomed political connections with Democrats who’ve been skeptical of her in the past, and worked to bolster her bipartisan and foreign policy bona fides.”

“It’s part of a conscious break from the heads-down posture that Warren purposefully maintained during the first five years of her Senate career… And it’s representative of Warren’s tricky navigation between the wishes of advocates who want her cutting a clear path to 2020, and supporters who think her best bet is to run up the score in her reelection race this year.”

No Names Line Up to Run Against Trump

January 1, 2018 at 11:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The usual early trickle of potential presidential candidates into Iowa and New Hampshire is already a full-on flood ahead of Trump’s reelection bid. And in the place of the traditional assortment of senators and governors is an ever-expanding hodgepodge of long shots — from mayors to House members to state-level bureaucrats — each absolutely convinced they hold the key to kicking the president to the curb come 2020.”

“Eyeing a historically unpopular commander in chief, a national party devoid of an obvious front-runner, and increasingly accessible online tools providing a semi-reliable source of funding, Democrats find that the barriers to entering the presidential conversation are lower than ever. And each new entry begets others eager to be in the mix or at least raise their profile — however slim their chances of winning the nomination might be.”

Gillibrand Sure Looks Like She’s Running for President

January 1, 2018 at 10:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A Democrat hoping to run for president might have a strategy of tacking noticeably to the left — in an attempt to grab the attention and enthusiasm of the progressive activists most likely to work for her and vote in the primaries. And Gillibrand has been doing precisely that. She was the first senator to call for Al Franken (D-MN) to step down, has been criticizing Bill Clinton’s failure to resign over allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct, and was an early supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders’s ‘Medicare for all’ bill. Earlier in December, she called on President Trump to resign over numerous credible allegations of sexual harassment and abuse, to which Trump responded with an insult- and insinuation-laden tweet reaction.”

“But wait, there’s more — several actions piquing the interest of party activists. In Illinois, Gillibrand endorsed a progressive challenger to incumbent Democratic Rep. Daniel Lipinski — even before the challenger, Marie Newman, had filed petitions to run. Gillibrand has also taken notably progressive stands in the Senate. Along with Sanders (I-VT) and only four other Democrats, Gillibrand voted against the massive annual defense bill. And she unveiled a plan with Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to ban states from passing ‘right-to-work’ laws, which enable workers in unionized shops to refuse to pay dues, a major conservative priority.”

Democratic Senators Run Left

December 30, 2017 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It used to be that Bernie Sanders was an ideological lone ranger in the Senate. Now, a whole host of potential presidential hopefuls are racing to represent the liberal grass roots on their issues of the day — and pulling the Democratic Party’s center of gravity further to the left,” Politico reports.

“The trend was apparent throughout the fall among the half-dozen Democratic senators drawing the loudest buzz for 2020 — aside from Sanders (I-VT), the group includes Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).”

“First they flocked to Sanders’ single-payer health care proposal. And then, almost in unison, they adopted two other stands popular among the Democratic base: Refusing to vote for any budget plan that didn’t include help for undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children, and calling for Donald Trump’s resignation over sexual harassment claims leveled against him last year by multiple women.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

December 29, 2017 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Another reason that I’m going to win another four years is because newspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if I’m not there because without me, their ratings are going down the tubes. Without me, The New York Times will indeed be not the failing New York Times, but the failed New York Times. So they basically have to let me win.”

— President Trump, in an interview with the New York Times.

Dean Tells Older Dems to ‘Get the Hell Out of the Way’

December 28, 2017 at 3:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Howard Dean told MSNBC that older members of the Democratic Party need “to get the hell out of the way and have somebody who is 50 running the country.”

Said Dean: “I think my generation needs to get the hell out of politics. Start coaching and start moving up this next generation who are more … fiscally sane. Neither Republicans or Democrats can claim they are fiscally responsible anymore.”

He added: “This young generation is going to pay for that if we don’t get the hell out of the way and have somebody who is 50 running the country.”

Garcetti Admits He’s Thinking About 2020 Bid

December 27, 2017 at 1:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s no secret Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is interested in running for president,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“When reporters ask about his intentions, he has used all sorts of ways to deflect, typically by saying he’s focused on his day job — for the moment. But speaking in Spanish to a Univision reporter this week, Garcetti edged ever closer to the telltale admission he’s actually considering it.”

Said Garcetti: “I am thinking about this. The majority of time goes to my work as mayor of Los Angeles, but every [citizen] should think about what our role is in these difficult times, in these dangerous times.”

Quote of the Day

December 26, 2017 at 7:43 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If we can’t figure out as a party how to win in 2018, we’re going to be in tough shape for 2020. I think it’s a huge political mistake for Democrats to even be talking about 2020 at this point.”

— Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), quoted by the Associated Press.

Republicans Have Handed Democrats Their Message

December 19, 2017 at 11:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “One of the common refrains after their defeat in 2016 has been: What’s the Democrats’ economic message? Well, this bill gives it to them on a silver platter.”

“Democrats, in 2018 and 2020, will likely campaign on putting the middle class before the wealthy and corporations (under this bill, the corporate tax cuts are permanent, while the ones for individuals are temporary). They will blame health care premium increases on the repeal of the individual mandate. And above all, they will say that Donald Trump doesn’t deserve a tax break, which he gets under the legislation.”

And it takes away the GOP’s credibility on the federal debt: “Well, this tax legislation has a price tag of about $1.5 trillion, and it isn’t fully paid for (even when you factor in assumed economic growth under the most favorable of analyses).”

Democrats Will Recommend Changes to Primary System

December 8, 2017 at 12:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Democratic Party working group will meet in Washington, D.C. today and tomorrow to finalize a formal list of recommended reforms for the party,” ABC News reports.

“Sources close to the commission who have seen working drafts of its current report tell ABC News the panel plans to recommend dramatic cuts to the individual voting power of superdelegates and new rules around caucuses and primaries to improve access for voters and recordkeeping.”

Nate Silver: “Eliminating most unbound superdelegates + highly proportional delegate allocation + potentially huge Democratic field = high probability of a brokered convention.”

McAuliffe Considering Presidential Bid In 2020

November 30, 2017 at 9:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) is “seriously” considering the 2020 presidential race, The Hill reports.

Said one McAuliffe friend: “He’s given me every indication that he’s taking it seriously. I don’t think he’s 100 percent decided that this is something he’s planning to do but it is something he’s seriously considering.”

Gutierrez Weighs Possible Presidential Bid

November 29, 2017 at 2:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who announced this week that he will not run for re-election, told Politico that he is not retiring and is thinking about running for president in 2020.

Said Gutierrez: “I will be reaching out to people across the country. I am going to take the steps to guarantee FEC regulations and rules about campaign financing, first and foremost, make sure I’m following the law…  I want to build something national.”

Gutiérrez said he and his wife plan to tour the country over the next six months.

Trump Is Giving Elizabeth Warren the Perfect Platform

November 28, 2017 at 8:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Hohmann: “Trump campaigned like a populist but governs like a plutocrat. Warren finds herself increasingly well positioned to prosecute that case for Democrats. The effort to dismantle the agency she dreamed up personally pains her, and she pledges to fight tirelessly to protect it, but Mulvaney’s takeover also offers a compelling political rationale to build a 2020 campaign around — if she chooses.”

“Many of the white working-class folks who turned out for Trump across the industrial Midwest did so because they believed he was so wealthy that he could thumb his nose at fat-cat bankers. They took him at his word that he’d be tougher on the big banks and the billionaire class than Hillary Clinton because he didn’t need to give paid speeches or raise money from them for his foundation. With a White House full of Goldman Sachs alumni, the reality has not matched the rhetoric. The GOP tax plan offers additional data points.”

Also worth mentioning: “Trump seems fixated, even obsessed, with Warren. He mentions her all the time.”

Sanders Makes Moves Towards Possible 2020 Bid

November 27, 2017 at 7:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Bernie Sanders is taking steps to address longstanding political shortcomings that were exposed in 2016, ahead of another possible presidential bid in 2020,” Politico reports.

“From forging closer ties to the labor movement to shoring up his once-flimsy foreign policy credentials, the moves have provided the senator inroads into party power structures that largely shunned him in favor of Hillary Clinton last year. They’ve also empowered the progressive icon to harness his newfound political power and help Democrats fight President Trump’s administration.”

Garcetti Is Serious About Running for President

November 20, 2017 at 2:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “And in the course of an hourlong interview in his office, Mr. Garcetti, 46, a Democrat, made clear that, as unlikely as it might sound, he is considering a run for president, after announcing he would not run for governor… Mr. Garcetti’s attempt to test these waters — and the fact that he is being watched with some seriousness despite never running a national or even statewide campaign before — may say less about this city’s mayor and more about the national political landscape.”

“The success of Mr. Trump, a business executive who had never run for office before, appears to have lowered the bar on the qualifications needed to run for the White House. And the Democratic Party is grappling with a sparse bench of candidates — many of its brightest prospects are in their 70s, like Joe Biden, the former vice president, or are relatively young and little known, like Mr. Garcetti.”
