Tony Blair Defends His Advisory Work

December 4, 2014 · 9:47 am ET · 5 Comments

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair defended his government advisory work to Vanity Fair saying maintaining that “it’s not as lucrative as people think, and describing it not as work for hire but as work that can change the character of countries.”

Said Blair: “I’m a private individual, I’m not a government department! One of the things people are going to have to get used to is: you are going to get leaders leaving office in their early 50s. I have a lot of energy. I feel extremely fit. There’s no way I’m going to retire and play golf. You look at someone like Henry [Kissinger]. He’s 91 and he’s still going strong. I love that. Or Shimon Peres! These are my role models.”

An Inside Look at Hillary Clinton’s Speaking Career

November 27, 2014 · 9:45 am ET · 20 Comments

Using public documents, the Washington Post got “a rare glimpse into the complex and meticulous backstage efforts” to manage Hillary Clinton’s lucrative speaking career.

The special discounted “university rate” for a talk at the University of California at Los Angeles: $300,000.

“It is commonplace for celebrity speakers to request special accommodations — and Clinton was no exception. Her representatives asked for a case of still water, room temperature, to be deposited stage right. They also asked that ‘a carafe of warm/hot water, coffee cup and saucer, pitcher of room temperature water, water glass, and lemon wedges’ be situated both on a table on stage as well as in another room where Clinton would stand for photos with VIPs.”

How to Make a Lot of Money in Politics

November 14, 2014 · 8:38 am ET · 15 Comments

“The super PAC that has been formed to draft tea party star Dr. Ben Carson to run for president has attracted a lot of attention for its massive fundraising capability, which has raked in more cash than the similar effort to draft Hillary Clinton,” BuzzFeed reports.

“But the National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee is spending as much as it’s taking in: $10,757,609, to be exact, according to Federal Election Commission data. The money is mostly being spent on fundraising efforts and for a digital campaign that the group’s campaign director told BuzzFeed News is modeled on the vaunted Obama operation. It’s also providing a salary for Vernon Robinson, the campaign director, who has made nearly $236,000 from his work so far for the PAC, according to FEC filings.”

Conflicts of Interest Abound in the House of Lords

November 12, 2014 · 10:25 am ET · 3 Comments

“For centuries, the upper chamber of the British Parliament was filled largely by the landed gentry. But in 1999, then-Prime Minister Tony Blair ’s government replaced most of the hereditary lords with business people, civic leaders and politicians appointed for life,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Blair said the shift would ‘end the feudal domination of one half of our legislature.’ Opponents said he was turning the House of Lords into a den of patronage… In the 15 years since, the House of Lords has struggled with the boundaries between public and private service. A code of conduct meant to separate the two has repeatedly been altered… Many lords now have ties to organizations that engage in lobbying, including one lord who agreed to be a lobbyist for an offshore-fund haven. Sixty-eight others give advice on government affairs to companies, trade groups or other organizations, or work for companies that specialize in government relations.”

August 18, 2014 · 6:54 am ET · Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton “usually requires those who pay her six-figure fees for speeches to also provide a private jet for transportation,” the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.

“And she doesn’t travel alone, relying on an entourage of a couple of ‘travel aides,’ and a couple of advance staffers who check out her speech site in the days leading up to her appearance, much like a White House trip, according to her contract and supporting documents concerning her Oct. 13 speech at a University of Nevada, Las Vegas Foundation fundraiser.”

How Tony Blair Used His Connections to Get Rich

August 6, 2014 · 12:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Since stepping down as British prime minister in 2007, Tony Blair “has tried to fashion a second act as a globe-trotting do-gooder… But at home, enthusiasm for such endeavors has been tempered by
criticism of his equally ambitious business enterprises, through a
private consultancy called Tony Blair Associates, whose clients have
included controversial monarchs and autocrats,” the New York Times reports.

“In many ways, Mr. Blair faces a perception problem. Years into his postpolitical makeover, confusion lingers about what particular hat he wears at any given time… His various roles often intersect with polarizing figures, which has only given the press more fodder.”
