“The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security in May warned that white supremacist groups had already carried out more attacks than any other domestic extremist group over the past 16 years and were likely to carry out more attacks over the next year,” according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by Foreign Policy.

“Even as President Trump continues to resist calling out white supremacists for violence, federal law enforcement has made clear that it sees these types of domestic extremists as a severe threat.”

“As 21st century activists seek to topple monuments to the 19th century Confederate rebellion, some white Southerners are again advocating for what the Confederates tried and failed to do: secede from the Union,” the AP reports.

“It’s not an easy argument to win, and it’s not clear how much support the idea has: The leading Southern nationalist group, the Alabama-based League of the South, has been making the same claim for more than two decades and still has an address in the U.S.A., not the C.S.A. But the idea of a break-away Southern nation persists.”

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said morning that Martin Luther King, Jr. “would be very disappointed” by the political realities of 2017 and especially by the presence of Steve Bannon — who he described as a “white supremacist-type” — in the White House, Politico reports.

Said Cummings: “In a way he would be pleased to have seen the first African-American elected president, to have seen many doors opened for people like me and others who now have opportunities that would not have had them back then. But at the same time, when we see a guy like Bannon, who is, as far as I’m concerned, a white supremacist-type person, sitting in the White House — sitting in the White House — and I’m paying his salary, I think he would be very disappointed.”

Washington Post: “The biggest yawning gap between Democrats and Republicans is on the issue of motivation and will power. The survey asks whether African Americans are worse off economically ‘because most just don’t have the motivation or will power to pull themselves up out of poverty?'”

“A majority — 55 percent — of white Republicans agreed with this statement, compared to 26 percent of white Democrats. That’s the biggest gap since the question was first asked in 1977 — though the gap was similar (60-32) in 2010.”

“The survey also asks people to rate the races on how hard-working or lazy they are, which allows us to compare whether people rate some higher than others. In this case, 42 percent of white Republicans rated African Americans as being lazier than whites, versus 24 percent of white Democrats. That 18-point gap is the second-biggest on-record, behind 2010 (19 points).”

An 19-year-old dual US-Israeli citizen has been arrested on suspicion of standing behind most of a series of bomb and other threats to Jewish communities ranging from the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand over the past six months, the Jerusalem Post reports.

President Trump appeared to suggest that the wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers across the U.S. could be coming from within the Jewish community itself, BuzzFeed reports.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who was part of a group of state attorneys general meeting with Trump, said that the commander-in-chief seemed to indicate he felt some of the threats were being made from the inside, as part of a potential effort “to make others look bad.”
