Russia Pulls Out of Nuclear Treaty

February 2, 2019 at 2:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a decision that was widely expected, suspended his country’s observance of a key nuclear arms control pact on Saturday in response to a similar move by the United States a day before,” the New York Times reports.

“But adding to a sense that the broader architecture of nuclear disarmament has started to unravel, Mr. Putin also said that Russia would build weapons previously banned under the treaty and would no longer initiate talks with the United States on any matters related to nuclear arms control.”

Bernie Sanders Set to Announce 2020 Bid

February 2, 2019 at 12:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo News that Sanders, an independent and self-described ‘democratic socialist,’ plans to announce his presidential bid imminently. While Sanders has been considering a bid for months, one of the sources said he was emboldened by early polls of the race that have consistently showed him as one of the top candidates in a crowded Democratic primary field.”

“In particular, the source said Sanders was heartened to see numbers indicating he is one of the leading candidates among African American and Latino voters, two groups he was perceived as struggling with in 2016.”

“The source also alluded to a spate of recent polls that show Sanders as the most popular politician in the country. They attributed Sanders’ strength in the polls to the base and name recognition he built with the prior presidential bid.”

Moderate Democrats Rethink Plans to Run

February 2, 2019 at 12:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The rising Democratic enthusiasm for big government liberalism is forcing a trio of leading 2020 contenders to rethink jumping in,” several sources tell Axios.

“Michael Bloomberg and former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, each of whom were virtual locks to run, are having serious second thoughts after watching Democrats embrace ‘Medicare for All,’ big tax increases and the Green New Deal. Joe Biden, who still wants to run, is being advised to delay any plans to see how this lurch to the left plays out. If Biden runs, look for Bloomberg and McAuliffe to bow out, the sources tell us.”

Key takeaway: “Iowa polling by a prominent 2020 hopeful found that the Democratic electorate has moved sharply left. For instance, the polling found that ‘socialism’ had a net positive rating, while ‘capitalism’ had a net negative rating.”

Northam Refuses to Resign

February 2, 2019 at 11:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) is refusing to resign despite overwhelming pressure from within his own party and has told at least one lawmaker that he now does not think that a racist photo in his 1984 yearbook includes him,” the Washington Post reports.

The Richmond Times Dispatch notes Northam is changing his story from last night.

The New York Times says Northam “has been calling former classmates at Eastern Virginia Medical School in an effort to determine more information about the picture.”

“With the governor and his top advisers gathered in the executive residence next to the State Capitol in Richmond, the Democrat familiar with Mr. Northam’s calls said the governor was determined to prove it was not him in the photograph and was even considering using facial recognition software.”

Deutsche Bank Refused Trump Loan Request In 2016

February 2, 2019 at 11:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s loan request, which has not been previously reported, set off a fight that reached the top of the German bank, according to three people familiar with the request. In the end, Deutsche Bank did something unexpected. It said no.”

“Senior officials at the bank, including its future chief executive, believed that Mr. Trump’s divisive candidacy made such a loan too risky, the people said. Among their concerns was that if Mr. Trump won the election and then defaulted, Deutsche Bank would have to choose between not collecting on the debt or seizing the assets of the president of the United States.”

Democrats Eye Milwaukee for Convention

February 2, 2019 at 10:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Our sources tell us Milwaukee is the odds-on favorite for the 2020 Democratic National Convention. (John Bresnahan’s sources tell him this too.) Houston and Miami are also still in the hunt, and all three cities have been asked to move forward with a master contract. Officials are pushing ahead to secure convention hotel rates, and representatives from all three cities were in D.C. last week delivering their final pitches.”

“Democrats need to win Wisconsin in 2020. The city has a new arena that has a lot of open space around it that could add some flexibility for planning and events.”

Trump Tries to Promote Ronny Jackson Again

February 2, 2019 at 8:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has tapped a senior Navy officer that he considered last year to be his Veterans Affairs secretary for promotion to two-star admiral, even though there is still an open Pentagon investigation against him into allegations that derailed his VA secretary nomination,” the Washington Post reports.

“The White House sent Rear Adm. Ronny L. Jackson’s name for promotion consideration to the Senate on Jan. 15. He was serving as the president’s doctor last April when Trump nominated him for the VA post, and withdrew from consideration after accusations of mismanagement and misconduct as White House physician emerged.”

Democrats Compete to Spurn Establishment Cash

February 2, 2019 at 7:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand jumped into the Democratic presidential nomination contest, they staked out the same position against corporate campaign cash,” NPR reports.

“Small as it is, this pledge to reject corporate PAC money has become a cornerstone of the Democrats’ primary contest. It helped Harris to raise $1.5 million online from small donors in the 24 hours after she announced. Warren’s campaign didn’t release a total for the post-announcement surge, but she said she got contributions from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.”

Does Russia Already Have a Favorite for 2020?

February 2, 2019 at 7:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Russian propaganda machine that tried to influence the 2016 U.S. election is now promoting the presidential aspirations of a controversial Hawaii Democrat who earlier this month declared her intention to run for president in 2020,” NBC News reports.

“An NBC News analysis of the main English-language news sites employed by Russia in its 2016 election meddling shows Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who is set to make her formal announcement Saturday, has become a favorite of the sites Moscow used when it interfered in 2016.”

McAuliffe Calls on Northam to Step Down

February 2, 2019 at 6:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) called on his successor Ralph Northam (D) to resign late Friday after Northam admitted he appeared in a picture showing a man wearing blackface and another dressed in a Ku Klux Klan robe, The Hill reports.

Said McAuliffe: “This has been a heartbreaking day. Ralph Northam is my friend and he served well as my Lt. Governor and as Governor. His actions on display in this photo were racist, unacceptable and inexcusable at any age and any time.”

He added: “The situation that he has put himself and the Commonwealth of Virginia in is untenable. It’s time for Ralph to step down, and for the Commonwealth to move forward.”

Newspaper Calls on Northam to Resign

February 1, 2019 at 9:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Richmond Times Dispatch called for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) to resign after the revelation of a photo from his medical school yearbook page, showing a man in blackface standing next to someone dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes.

We all act foolishly in our youth. But a college graduate, studying to be a physician, in a state with Virginia’s troubled racial history, should know better than to reduce that history to a callous joke. The photograph reveals a lack of adult judgment that is disturbing. It does not erase Northam’s service in the military or his compassion as a physician. It does, however, strongly suggest that he should, for the good of Virginia, step down from its highest office and allow Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax to succeed him.

Sherrod Brown Says Howard Schultz Is a ‘Total Idiot’

February 1, 2019 at 9:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) dismissed a possible independent presidential campaign from Howard Schultz, calling the billionaire former Starbucks CEO a “total idiot,” CNN reports.

“While talking with voters in Iowa’s Dallas County after a farmers’ roundtable, the Ohio Democrat, who’s also considering a presidential bid, introduced himself to a voter who expressed concern about dark money in politics.”

Said Brown: “Yeah, I mean you got this idiot Schultz running, maybe. He’s an idiot. I mean, he’s a total idiot.”

McConnell Warned Trump on Emergency Declaration

February 1, 2019 at 8:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cautioned President Trump privately this week about the consequences of declaring a national emergency to build his border wall, telling him the move could trigger political blowback and divide the GOP,” the Washington Post reports.

“McConnell told Trump that Congress might end up passing a resolution disapproving the emergency declaration, the people said — which would force the president to contemplate issuing his first veto ever, in the face of opposition from his own party.”

Schultz Has Much Higher Unfavorability Other Candidates

February 1, 2019 at 8:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Change Research (D) survey finds former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is less known to the electorate than other declared and potential presidential candidates  with 56% having never heard of him or don’t have an opinion. Among those who have an opinion, just 4% view him favorably compared to 40% unfavorably — a 10:1 unfavorable to favorable ratio, far higher than any other candidate tested.

Schultz is viewed unfavorably by Democrats (50% unfavorable  to  4% favorable), Republicans (43% unfavorable  to  4% favorable), and Independents (31% unfavorable  to 4% favorable).

In hypothetical matchups, with and without Schultz in the race, of Donald Trump running against different Democrats — Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Beto O’Rourke, and Bernie Sanders — Schultz takes an average of four points away from what the Democratic candidate receives in a two-way race, while taking just 1% away from Trump.

Hawley May Have Violated Open Records Laws

February 1, 2019 at 8:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Not long after Josh Hawley announced in 2017 that he was exploring a U.S. Senate run, Democrats requested records of any emails between his attorney general’s office and the consultants running his campaign. Hawley’s office told them they didn’t have any emails to turn over,” the Kansas City Star reports.

“But the emails did exist.”

“The revelation that Democrats made a records request and that Hawley’s office denied it — uncovered in documents newly obtained by The Star — is now leading advocates for government transparency to question whether Hawley and his staff failed to comply with the state’s Sunshine Laws.”

Northam Admits Appearing In Racist Yearbook Photo

February 1, 2019 at 5:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A photo from Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) medical school yearbook shows two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor, the Virginian-Pilot reports.

The Washington Post reports Northam acknowledged appearing in the “clearly racist and offensive” photograph.

Said Northam: “I am deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo and for the hurt that decision caused then and now. This behavior is not in keeping with who I am today and the values I have fought for throughout my career in the military, in medicine, and in public service. But I want to be clear, I understand how this decision shakes Virginians’ faith in that commitment.”

Politico reports the Virginia Republican Party has called on the governor to resign.
