Flávio Bolsonaro Surges Past Lula in Brazil

October 4, 2026 · 10:42 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Flávio Bolsonaro dealt President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a bruising first-round defeat Sunday, finishing ahead of the leftist leader and putting Brazil’s right within reach of taking back power in Latin America’s largest nation,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Flávio Bolsonaro, a 45-year-old senator and the eldest son of imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro, received 47.3% of votes, short of the 50% needed for an outright victory, while da Silva got just 44.8% with 98% counted late Sunday. Other right-wing candidates won a combined 5%, leaving the 80-year-old incumbent fighting for his political survival ahead of the Oct. 25 runoff.”

“The result—and major victories by conservatives in concurrent congressional and state elections Sunday—underscored the strength of right-wing sentiment in Brazil that none of the major polls had managed to capture.”

A Familiar Mix of Rituals at Trump’s Midterm Rallies

October 4, 2026 · 6:12 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“If President Trump’s earlier political rallies felt like standing-room-only rock concerts, the latest ones are starting to feel like the first stops of a farewell tour,” the New York Times reports.

“The events are a ritual. He will attack Democrats. His words will probably stop making actual, logical sense for a moment, or for many moments. (It’s ‘the weave,’ you see.) He will accuse Democrats of rigging the 2020 election (they didn’t). He will attack the news media. Then he will dance to a Village People song.”

“At a time when embattled Republican candidates could use concentrated attention — and money — to elevate a prospective new crop of leaders, Mr. Trump is clinging to an old strategy that has served him for years: talking mostly about himself. With a month until the midterms, he is again rallying, talking up his record, offering cash prizes and asking supporters to play pretend.”

“Beshear is likely trying get ahead of the ‘nepo baby’ charge because it could undermine one of his main pitches as a potential 2028 presidential candidate — that his success in Kentucky means he’s more electable than other Democrats.”

Gas, Diesel and Electricity Prices Are Squeezing Voters

October 4, 2026 · 4:22 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Gas prices are up. Electricity bills, too. And diesel prices recently hit record highs. With less than a month until the midterm elections, Americans are facing a multifront squeeze from rising energy prices,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“A large portion of higher costs have been driven by the U.S. war with Iran. Many voters say energy prices are top of mind as they head to the ballot box in November.”

“Diesel prices are a particular concern for Republicans. Both trucking and agriculture heavily rely on diesel fuel for their operations. When diesel prices rise, the cost of goods and foods delivered and cultivated by diesel-reliant vehicles increase as well, affecting American consumers. A global fuels crunch sent diesel prices surging to record levels in recent weeks. As of Saturday, diesel prices were $6.36 a gallon, up from $3.70 a year ago, according to AAA.”

Democrats Get More Bang for Their Ad Buck

October 4, 2026 · 1:21 pm ET · Leave a Comment

The Downballot: “New data from AdImpact shows that, across nine of the most competitive Senate contests, Republicans had spent $563 million on advertising through the end of September versus $375 million for Democrats—a gap of 60% to 40% in favor of the GOP.”

“But in terms of the actual number of ads aired, the difference is much smaller. In total, Republican ads have run roughly 290,000 times, while the Democrats’ have appeared approximately 250,000 times. That’s a much smaller difference of 54% to 46%.”

“Why hasn’t the GOP spending spree translated into a comparable advertising edge? Because Republicans have heavily relied on third-party groups like super PACs, which have to pay prevailing market rates for ads. Candidates, by contrast, are entitled by law to the lowest rates that broadcasters offer.”
