Guilfoyle Scrambled to Save Her Ambassadorship

October 18, 2026 · 10:43 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Once Kimberly Guilfoyle saw the walls closing in on her tenure in Athens, she breathlessly sought a lifeline to save her ambassadorship,” the Daily Mail reports.

“Three powerful men sat atop her list of frenzied calls, according to two sources: U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Rupert Murdoch, the chairman emeritus of Fox News and owner of the Wall Street Journal.”

“The now ex-ambassador to Greece reportedly asked Hegseth and Barrack for moral support – and a personal pitch to President Donald Trump on her behalf.”

“In the past two elections that I oversaw as lieutenant governor, the threats were all external: non-state actors, cyber security threats and other things. But now we also have threats coming from within our own government.”

— Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson (R), quoted by CBS News.

It’s the Corruption Too, Stupid

October 18, 2026 · 10:02 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Talking PointsFor much of this election year, the economy has dominated the political conversation. Voters have been frustrated by rising prices and the growing difficulty of making ends meet.

But another issue has now emerged alongside the economy as a major concern heading into the midterms: government corruption.

“I examined his ass, and then I looked at his shoulders. I looked at his feet. I looked at his hand. I looked at his jawline. I then patted him on the shoulder, and it was like a piece of steel. I’m still recovering.”

— President Trump, quoted by CNN, while campaigning for Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH).

Trump Staffers Lawyer Up Early

October 18, 2026 · 9:36 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Trump administration officials are lawyering up,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“From cabinet secretaries to midlevel staffers, people who work for President Trump are calling law firms in search of legal advice as they brace for an avalanche of investigations next year if Democrats take one or both houses of Congress in the midterms.”

“Lawyers say the inquiries signal unease that Democrats will investigate everything from alleged pay-to-play pardons, to the Kennedy Center renovation and Donald Trump Jr. wedding. The probes, which party leaders have already previewed, could interfere with Trump’s agenda for his remaining two years in office. Administration officials personally face legal, reputational and financial risks if they are roped into those inquiries.”

October 18, 2026 · 9:34 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“French President Emmanuel Macron and his embattled prime minister face a pile-up of crises after the country’s worst street violence in years drew accusations that the government had botched its policing operation,” the Financial Times reports.

“Macron’s approval ratings are hovering close to 15 percent, the lowest since he was first elected in 2017.”

Putin Proposes Summit with Trump and Xi

October 18, 2026 · 9:14 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that he, President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping meet next month to talk about Ukraine in an attempt to negotiate an end to the four-year conflict that would favor Moscow,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The plan represents an effort by Putin to capitalize on warming ties between Trump and the Russian leader that have alarmed Ukraine and its allies in Washington and Europe. Such a summit—one without the involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—would be unprecedented and send alarm bells ringing in European capitals and beyond.”

Trump Defends Diesel Deal with Russia

October 18, 2026 · 7:03 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said he cut a diesel export deal with Russia and delayed imposing further sanctions because he doesn’t want to drive Vladimir Putin away from peace talks with Ukraine,” Bloomberg reports.

“At the same time, Trump also accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of prolonging the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fifth year, because of the military aid he has gotten from European allies.”

Said Trump: “I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and don’t want to do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table. Great progress is being made.”

White House Turmoil Weighs On GOP Midterm Prospects

October 18, 2026 · 5:44 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump continued to sell himself as the Republican Party’s savior as he crisscrossed the country in recent days, making it clear in words and sheer presence that this midterm election is about him,” the New York Times reports.

“But back in the nation’s capital, Mr. Trump’s White House was consumed by dramas that reinforced why polls show that his presidency itself has become a drag on Republican tickets.”

Financial Times: White House chaos overshadows Trump’s midterms push.

French Leaders Trade Blame After Rioting Sweeps Nation

October 18, 2026 · 5:40 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“France confronted scenes of destruction on Sunday, from toppled landmarks to smashed city storefronts, as its political class began pointing fingers over who bore responsibility for some of the worst rioting to sweep the nation in years,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The violence, which erupted during a nationwide protest on Saturday, resumed Sunday evening with rioters burning barricades across the city. More than 600 police officers and firefighters were injured in the weekend mayhem and more than 2,000 people were detained.”

“In a country with a long history of violent protest, the weekend riot stood out for its sheer scale, with police mostly powerless to stop thousands of rioters who descended on urban centers across the country, attacking city halls, luxury shopping districts and other areas usually considered off-limits.”

Trump’s Russia Overtures Put Republicans in Hot Seat

October 18, 2026 · 5:31 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s surprise diesel deal with Russia and decision to waive sanctions on Moscow have become a headache for Republican candidates with just two weeks to go before the midterms,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In interviews and town halls, Republicans are being pressed on why now is the time to go soft on Vladimir Putin. Some of them are breaking with Trump rather than defend his string of Russia-friendly decisions.”

“Diesel prices haven’t fallen significantly, adding to the challenge in an election heavily focused on affordability. The result is a new political hurdle for Republicans who are uncomfortable with the idea of easing sanctions on Putin’s Russia and have yet to see the hoped-for economic gains.”

Raphael Warnock Bets Big On Scott Colom in Mississippi

October 18, 2026 · 4:32 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Raphael Warnock is racing to get Democrat Scott Colom elected in deep-red Mississippi. It’s part of his bigger bet on the South,” Politico reports.

“Colom, a charismatic local prosecutor, is within striking distance in the polls of unseating Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. And in the absence of more dedicated resources, Warnock himself is trying to fill the gap by directing money and donors to the race.”

2028 ‘Shadow Primary’ Descends On the Midterms

October 18, 2026 · 4:26 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“In the final stage of this year’s midterms, prospective presidential candidates are parachuting into battleground states to rally support for candidates on the ballot this fall, road-test their stump speeches, and introduce themselves to voters and activists,” the New York Times reports.

“The Democratic schedule is especially packed in New Hampshire, an early presidential nominating state where there is a competitive Senate race. While New Hampshire has lost its long vaunted first-in-the-nation Democratic primary status to South Carolina, it will go third in 2028.”

Trump Voters Explain Jon Ossoff’s Appeal

October 18, 2026 · 3:09 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Sarah Longwell: “Georgia has had close elections in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024—but right now Sen. Jon Ossoff’s lead is pushing into the double digits. Why?”

“One reason is that Ossoff completely eviscerated his opponent, Rep. Mike Collins, in a couple of recent debates for voting to direct money to data-center developers and for hiring ‘half the Third Reich’ to staff his congressional office. In a particularly arresting image, Ossoff said that Collins would be grabbing a billy club if John Lewis were marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge today. He did all of this with the cadence of Atticus Finch, but didn’t spend so much time in the muck that he failed to speak with soaring, Obama-esque rhetoric about the promise of America.”

“It was a performance bound to set off a lot of speculation about a presidential run—which Ossoff promised not to make. In short, Ossoff is doing exactly what I’ve been begging Democrats to do.”

Anti-Party, Anti-Politician Candidates Surge in Midterms

October 18, 2026 · 2:35 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“In red states and blue, unconventional candidates are downplaying — or even disowning — party labels to tap into voters’ deep disdain for Washington,” Axios reports.

“They might not all win, but the sheer number of political outsiders connecting with voters tells us something about the electorate: It’s angry and willing to take risks.”

“The candidates — whether they come from the pulpit or the NFL sidelines — are making the same bet: Voters are tired of career politicians.”
