A More Confident Iran Emerges After Six Months of War

September 4, 2026 at 11:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran has grown more confident in its ability to attack targets in the Middle East and appears determined to continue the conflict for months to frustrate the United States, according to U.S. intelligence reports in recent weeks,” the New York Times reports.

“In many respects, the assessments reflect what has been observable on the ground as fighting erupted again after a period of relative calm. In the past week, Iran targeted ships in the Strait of Hormuz and American troops in the region, and U.S. forces struck inside Iran, killing military personnel and civilians.”

“The new exchanges have been limited so far. But the intelligence reports, according to people who have read them, suggest that Iran’s hard-line government might be contemplating a significant escalation.”

Inside Zohran Mamdani’s Private Army of Public Influencers

September 4, 2026 at 11:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Mamdani is a master of new media, and his rise to power has been driven largely by his ease in front of a camera and his ability to harness the seeming informality of social media to connect with broad constituencies.”

“But as mayor, he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration and enhance his popularity.”

“The administration regularly sends the influencers memos on the mayor’s priorities and encourages them to trumpet his accomplishments, all outside of public scrutiny. The missives are delivered in group chats on Signal, an encrypted messaging app designed to shield posts from public review.”

“Federal regulators are opening an investigation into whether Tesla’s new steering-wheel-free taxis comply with safety rules a day after the company began offering rides in the vehicles,” Associated Press reports.

“The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was looking into whether Tesla was in full compliance with federal rules in deploying so-called Cybercabs in Austin, Texas, given that the two-seater cars lack steering wheels, mirrors or brake pedals typically required of all vehicles.”

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get 50% off and taste the difference for yourself.

FCC Moves to Dismiss ABC’s First Amendment Suit

September 4, 2026 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Federal Communications Commission has asked a federal judge to dismiss ABC’s First Amendment lawsuit challenging the agency’s early review of licenses for eight Disney-owned television stations, arguing the court lacks jurisdiction and that the network failed to establish that the scrutiny was retaliation over its programming,” The Wrap reports.

Democrats Get a Boost in the Map Wars

September 4, 2026 at 10:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

I got to this a little late last night because I was at the U.S. Open watching some great tennis, but Democrats got two potentially significant redistricting wins.

First, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the state must use its old congressional map in this year’s general election.

France’s Budget Crisis Is Depicted in Its Own Video Game

September 4, 2026 at 10:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lionel Laurent: “The Nov. 19 release date of video-game series Grand Theft Auto’s latest installment must seem like an agonizing wait for fans. But there’s an amuse bouche for those looking for perhaps less bloody but just as dramatic interactive thrills: A new game that puts you in the shoes of a French budget minister trying to bring public finances under control.”

“Created by a former advisor to one-time prime minister and current presidential candidate Gabriel Attal, the ‘Battle of the Budget‘ is educational, entertaining and a little depressing. You start off creating your own minister – battle-hardened politician, ivory-tower academic or charismatic tycoon – and then make a series of choices to craft the next budget, from the pace of deficit reduction to choosing which specific subsidy to withdraw.”

“So far, so predictable. But it’s after those initial choices that the game really cranks up a gear, unfolding episode by episode like a Netflix series.”

“President Donald Trump on Friday demanded that the Federal Reserve slash interest rates or else he will cut off trade with countries with which the U.S. maintains trade deficits,” CNBC reports.

“Trump issued the sweeping ultimatum in a Truth Social post reacting to a much-stronger-than-expected monthly jobs report by urging the central bank and its chairman, Kevin Warsh, to ‘get smart’ and cut rates.”

GOP Candidates Think Trump Is Radioactive

September 4, 2026 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The threat of a Trump drag is so dire that some at-risk Republicans have relayed to Trump’s political team that they don’t want him to visit their districts ahead of November… And top GOP pollsters have advised some vulnerable incumbents and candidates to either not talk about Trump on the trail, or at least limit direct references to the president, our colleagues reported.”

Said one senior Republican: “We’ve told them he cannot come. I do not believe they would send him without our OK. And if they did, we probably wouldn’t campaign with him.”

Inside Trump’s Ballroom Obsession

September 4, 2026 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “Since Trump’s return to the White House, his administration has made changes to more than 100 structures in Washington, D.C. The total price tag: somewhere north of a billion dollars. The biggest project, in terms of both cost (estimated to be $800 million when done) and presidential mindshare, is the ballroom and the military bunker that will be tucked underneath…”

“Still, the politics of the ballroom are objectively bad for Trump… Trump is aware of these concerns. He just doesn’t really care.”
