Biden Sounds Like Someone Who Wants to Run

October 25, 2017 · 2:55 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Biden tells InStyle what he would offer if he were to run for president in 2020:

“I think this moment in American history sort of fits into my wheelhouse and the strengths I have. I am, I think most people would say, fairly knowledgeable about American foreign policy. I’m pretty good at diplomacy internationally and bringing people together, cutting through and settling things. And I think what people are looking for most, and I hope I have it, is authenticity. I have great relationships with my Republican colleagues. They trust me, and I trust them. We can work things through.

“And also,” he continues, “I think the defining issue of our time is sustaining the middle class. You know, when I got to Washington they called me Middle Class Joe, and it wasn’t meant as a compliment. But the middle class is the reason for our social and political stability.”

He exhales. “Anyway, I’m familiar with the issues, and I think I could bring some talent there. So it’s not that I don’t think I’m equipped to do the job. We’ll just see.”

“Joe Biden said the Democratic Party in 2016 ‘did not talk about what it always stood for — and that was how to maintain a burgeoning middle class.’ I find this fairly remarkable, considering that Joe himself campaigned for me all over the Midwest and talked plenty about the middle class.”

— Hillary Clinton, quoted by CNN, from her new book What Happened.

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s daughter, Ashley, told Women’s Wear Daily that her father is considering a run for president in 2020.

Said Ashley Biden: “He’ll make a decision when that time comes. A lot can happen in four years and we know this as a family. If he is in good health, knock on wood, and seeing what the landscape is at the time, yeah, I think he is considering it.”

Biden’s Book Seen as a 2020 Test

August 31, 2017 · 6:38 am ET · Leave a Comment

Joe Biden will release a new book this fall that could also serve as a test for whether the country is interested in seeing him run for president, The Hill reports.

Longtime advisers to Biden see his memoir, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship and Purpose as the ultimate test for whether or not he’ll wade into a potentially crowded 2020 field.

Obama Donors Not Committing to Biden

August 10, 2017 · 7:18 am ET · Leave a Comment

Major donors to former President Obama aren’t committing to Joe Biden, The Hill reports.

“While it is exceedingly early in the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, top Obama donors are signaling that Biden cannot depend on their support… None of them would commit to backing Biden, and many of them said they preferred to find a new voice to run against President Trump in 2020.”

Said one: “He’s the opposite of what the party says it wants right now. He’s going to have a tough time if he runs..”

Biden Launches a Political Action Committee

May 31, 2017 · 6:55 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Joe Biden “is planning to create a political action committee, the most concrete sign yet that he intends to remain active in the Democratic Party and is considering a presidential bid in 2020,” the New York Times reports.

“The American Possibilities PAC will offer the former vice president a platform he can use to nurture relationships with donors, travel on behalf of the party and contribute to candidates in the two governor’s races in November and in next year’s midterm elections… By creating a political organization, Mr. Biden, 74, is also sending an unmistakable message to the many other Democrats eyeing the White House that he is not planning to quietly recede into retirement.”

“Joe Biden has been saying yes to nearly all the political invitations coming his way, with new ones arriving almost daily. Privately, the former vice president and his staff have started talking about how to begin planning a strategy with a roughly 18-month timeline so that if he decides on another presidential run, he’ll be best positioned to get it off the ground,” Politico reports.

“Biden will be 77 by the time of the next Iowa caucuses, but Biden 2020 just might happen.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden told Colgate University students that if he had run for president in 2016 he could have won, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reports.

Said Biden: “On a college campus I will never, never do anything other than answer the question completely unvarnished and straightforward. The answer is that I had planned on running for president. And although it would have been a very difficult primary, I think I could have won.”

Biden added that he had a lot of data collected and was fairly confident that as a Democratic party’s nominee, he could have won.

Obama and Biden Had Secret Signals

January 20, 2017 · 7:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Alter: “But sometimes, their most important communication was unspoken. Obama and Biden worked in wordless tandem in the Situation Room, where Biden served as what Obama told me he called ‘my hidden proxy.’ By pre-arrangement familiar to fans of buddy cop movies, Biden posed tough questions and offered provocative ideas that Obama wanted discussed but preferred not to raise himself, for fear of tilting the debate. (If the president tips his hand, subordinates tend to tailor their arguments to that position to win favor.) Biden took the lead this way dozens of times, most memorably on debates over Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“Obama told me that he thought the synchronized approach gave high-level policy discussions ‘more intellectual rigor’ and let him stay above the fray. Biden remembered Defense Secretary Leon Panetta theorizing that every time Obama leaned back in his chair in the Situation Room, it was a quiet cue for the vice president to do his thing. Biden was amused that their gambit had been discovered: ‘I told Leon he was correct.'”

Obama Surprises Biden with Award

January 12, 2017 · 5:19 pm ET · Leave a Comment

President Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to a shocked Vice President Biden on Thursday at the White House, the Washington Post reports.

“Biden immediately spun around and wiped his face and eyes with his handkerchief. The president added that he was bestowing the medal ‘with distinction,’ an additional level of veneration that his predecessors had reserved for only three other recipients — Pope John Paul II, former President Ronald Reagan and Gen. Colin Powell.”
