The document seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”

Black Voters Will Be Democratic Kingmakers in 2020

June 14, 2017 · 7:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

Josh Kraushaar: “For all the talk about the power of progressives in the Democratic Party, one significant part of the Democratic coalition has been overlooked in the run-up to the next presidential election: African-Americans. Black voters made up at least 20 percent of the Democratic vote in at least 15 states during the 2016 presidential primaries (and comprise that share in three other states without exit polling: Louisiana, New Jersey, and Delaware). Without African-Americans, who gave 76 percent of their vote in the primaries to Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders easily could have been the Democratic nominee. Sanders won 49.1 percent of the Democratic white vote to Clinton’s 48.9 percent.”

“Black voters have historically rallied behind one Democratic candidate… Since 1976, the candidate backed by black voters became the Democratic nominee in seven of the nine contested nomination battles.”

Cummings Calls Bannon a White Supremacist

April 4, 2017 · 10:40 am ET · Leave a Comment

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said morning that Martin Luther King, Jr. “would be very disappointed” by the political realities of 2017 and especially by the presence of Steve Bannon — who he described as a “white supremacist-type” — in the White House, Politico reports.

Said Cummings: “In a way he would be pleased to have seen the first African-American elected president, to have seen many doors opened for people like me and others who now have opportunities that would not have had them back then. But at the same time, when we see a guy like Bannon, who is, as far as I’m concerned, a white supremacist-type person, sitting in the White House — sitting in the White House — and I’m paying his salary, I think he would be very disappointed.”

How Republicans View Work Ethic, Intelligence of Blacks

March 31, 2017 · 6:51 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The biggest yawning gap between Democrats and Republicans is on the issue of motivation and will power. The survey asks whether African Americans are worse off economically ‘because most just don’t have the motivation or will power to pull themselves up out of poverty?'”

“A majority — 55 percent — of white Republicans agreed with this statement, compared to 26 percent of white Democrats. That’s the biggest gap since the question was first asked in 1977 — though the gap was similar (60-32) in 2010.”

“The survey also asks people to rate the races on how hard-working or lazy they are, which allows us to compare whether people rate some higher than others. In this case, 42 percent of white Republicans rated African Americans as being lazier than whites, versus 24 percent of white Democrats. That 18-point gap is the second-biggest on-record, behind 2010 (19 points).”

King Predicts Blacks and Hispanics Will Fight Each Other

March 14, 2017 · 8:37 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told an Iowa radio station that blacks and Hispanics “will be fighting each other” before overtaking whites in the U.S. population.

Said King: “When you start accentuating the differences, then you start ending up with people that are at each other’s throats. And he’s adding up Hispanics and blacks into what he predicts will be in greater number than whites in America. I will predict that Hispanics and the blacks will be fighting each other before that happens.”

Trump Suggests Anti-Semitic Threats Coming from Jews

February 28, 2017 · 4:39 pm ET · Leave a Comment

President Trump appeared to suggest that the wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers across the U.S. could be coming from within the Jewish community itself, BuzzFeed reports.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who was part of a group of state attorneys general meeting with Trump, said that the commander-in-chief seemed to indicate he felt some of the threats were being made from the inside, as part of a potential effort “to make others look bad.”

“In the wake of 11 new threats today against Jewish centers, from New York to New Mexico, the FBI said it is investigating, along with the Department of Justice, bomb threats to the centers across the country,” ABC News reports.

“Federal authorities are looking into threats communicated to at least 60 Jewish centers around the country this year. The threats started in January and the FBI began investigating later that same month. The threats have come in ‘different waves,’ with more threats phoned in to centers today, according to one source familiar with the matter.”

Miller Got His Start Pestering Hispanic Students

February 13, 2017 · 1:17 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Univision spoke to high school classmates of Trump policy adviser Stephen Miller and found he “had few friends, none of them non-white. They said he used to make fun of the children of Latino and Asian immigrants who did not speak English well.”

“Early on, Miller began to write opinion columns in conservative blogs, the local press and the high school’s own newspaper, The Samohi. He also contributed at times to the national radio show of Larry Elder, a conservative African American, and once invited him to speak at the school. Displaying his hostility toward minorities, Miller complained to school administrators about announcements in Spanish and festivals that celebrated diversity.”

Giuliani Says Trump Wanted a ‘Legal’ Muslim Ban

January 29, 2017 · 8:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told Fox News that Donald Trump came to him for guidance on implementing a so-called “Muslim ban” and from that, he helped construct the controversial order crippling international travel from predominantly Muslim countries, the New York Daily News reports.

“The ex-NYC mayor said he pitched the ban, not as a religious prohibition, but one focused on danger.

Said Giuliani: “I’ll tell you the whole history of it. When he first announced it, he said ‘Muslim ban.’ He called me up, he said ‘put a commission together, show me the right way to do it, legally.'”

LePage Says Lewis Should Thank White Presidents

January 17, 2017 · 3:47 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said “that the NAACP should apologize to white America, making the comment just hours after he weighed in on the president-elect’s Twitter beef with a civil rights icon, saying U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) should be grateful,” the Portland Press Herald reports.

Said LePage: “I will just say this: John Lewis ought to look at history. It was Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves, it was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant who fought against Jim Crow laws. A simple thank you would suffice.”

John Lewis, Donald Trump and the Meaning of Legitimacy

January 16, 2017 · 8:23 am ET · Leave a Comment

David Remnick: “John Lewis represents Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District, one vote of four hundred and thirty-five. He is also the singular conscience of Capitol Hill. Lewis is a dismal institution’s griot, a historical actor and hero capable of telling the most complex and painful of American stories—the story of race. That is his job, his mission. With Dr. King and Malcolm X, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ella Baker long gone, Lewis remains nearly alone in his capacity to tell the story of that era as a direct witness and, because of all that he has seen and endured, to issue credible moral judgment.”

“Only a heedless few would reject that judgment out of hand, no matter how wounding. Who would think to call John Lewis ‘all talk, talk, talk—no action or results’? Who would have the impoverished language to dismiss the whole of John Lewis as ‘sad’? As it happens, the President-elect of the United States.”

Meanwhile, the AP reports that two of John Lewis’ books — his graphic novel trilogy, March and his 2015 memoir, Walking With the Wind — have sold out on Amazon.

How Racism and Sexism Were Central to Trump’s Success

December 28, 2016 · 10:19 am ET · Leave a Comment

A new presentation by political scientist Brian Schaffner sheds light on how racism and sexism predicted support for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Schaffner conducted a poll which rated respondents on a scale of racism and sexism based on their answers to a series of questions. He found that the gap between college and non-college whites was the largest since at least 1980 and that attitudes on racism and sexism account for most of that gap.

An interesting experiment was embedded in the latest HuffPost/YouGov survey. Half of the respondents were asked if they agreed or disagreed with the following statement: “Over the past few years, blacks have gotten less than they deserve.” The other half was provided with the exact same statement, except the word “blacks” was switched to “average Americans.”
