Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) told the Daily Caller the door isn’t closed on a possible redraw of his state’s congressional map.

“Tennessee Republicans unveiled a new congressional map on Wednesday that would wipe out the lone Democratic seat in the Volunteer State,” Punchbowl News reports.

“The proposal, which must pass the GOP-dominated state legislature, cracks Memphis’ Shelby County into three districts and likely dooms the reelection prospects of longtime Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN).”

“Tennessee’s primary is not until August, giving Republican lawmakers there more time than other states to switch up their congressional map.”

Rachel Bade: “Forget waiting for the Virginia Supreme Court to rule on the state’s redistricting fight — Democrats aren’t even pretending to keep it together behind closed doors anymore…”

“Just last fall, the same senior Virginia Democrats who pushed the redistricting gambit were telling Dan the effort was a slam dunk — that they were 90 percent confident the court would quickly allow the new maps to take effect. Yesterday, those same folks told Dan their confidence has cratered to under 50 percent.”

“The source of panic? That the state’s high court failed by Friday afternoon to toss the GOP’s challenge to the new maps.”

Marc Novicoff: “If the intent behind disenfranchising minority voters appears to be merely partisan, the gerrymander is now legal. The ruling will allow Republican state legislatures in the South to erase most if not all of the region’s few blue House districts without fear of being blocked in court.”

“And so the gerrymandering wars, already awful, are poised to get even worse. Democrats will respond to the Republican response to Callais; Republicans will respond to the response to the response; voters will lose in the process. In a few years, almost every seat in the House of Representatives could be safely occupied by a hyper-partisan incumbent, beholden only to primary voters.”

“The chamber could become something like the Electoral College: Whoever wins a state gets all of its representatives, and the winners are there just to vote for or against the president.”

New York Times: “The Supreme Court on Monday evening agreed to immediately transmit to the lower courts its opinion striking down Louisiana’s congressional map, rather than wait 32 days, as would have been routine.”

“Last week’s landmark opinion from the court, which weakened the Voting Rights Act by concluding that one of Louisiana’s majority-Black congressional districts was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, has set off a chaotic scramble in the state.”

“Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed into law a new congressional map that could help Republicans pick up four more seats in the House — but one that is expected to immediately trigger lawsuits,” Politico reports.

Punchbowl News: “There’s a redistricting frenzy breaking out across the South as GOP governors and legislators — under pressure from Trump — scramble to redraw minority-majority districts in order to replace Black Democrats with loyal Republicans. This comes after the Supreme Court’s Callais decision. The goal is to try to save Speaker Mike Johnson’s endangered House GOP majority, and maybe the final two years of Trump’s presidency.”

“Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama are the battlegrounds for the spiral of legal and political moves and counter-moves. There’s also action in South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.”

“More than a dozen House seats are in play here. Some of the technical legal questions will likely be resolved by the end of today. But the political scramble is just revving up.”

“Two more Republican-controlled states took steps Friday to redraw their congressional maps as party leaders try to capitalize on the Supreme Court’s decision this week to weaken the Voting Rights Act,” the Washington Post reports.

“Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) both called special sessions aimed at picking up more Republican seats, part of a gerrymandering war unprecedented in modern times.”

“That followed Republican Gov. Jeff Landry’s announcement Thursday that he would suspend Louisiana’s May 16 U.S. House primaries so his state could redraw its map.”

“This week’s Supreme Court ruling weakening the Voting Rights Act has nullified some of the Democratic resistance that kept many states from pursuing extreme gerrymanders this election cycle,” Axios reports.

“That new energy could put a fresh crop of blue and even purple states on the board as potential redistricting targets ahead of 2028.”

“Even some legislators who previously resisted redistricting in their states appear to be warming up to the idea after Wednesday’s decision.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he’s prepared to sue to stop Florida from redrawing its congressional districts, NOTUS reports.

Said Jeffries: “My words to Ron DeSantis are: ‘See you in court.'”

He added: “We will sue immediately upon it being signed into law. If we get to that point, it’s unconstitutional under state law. We also believe it violates the 14th Amendment by intentionally discriminating and targeting, particularly, Latinos in Central Florida.”

“Gov. Brian Kemp made clear Friday he won’t cancel Georgia’s May 19 primary or rush to impose new political maps on this year’s elections after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to upend a key provision of the Voting Rights Act has plunged the nation into a dizzying new era of partisan conflict, most likely ushering in a forever redistricting war that could produce fewer competitive seats in Congress and further polarize American politics,” the New York Times reports.

“Left as probable casualties are longstanding principles of fair representation — along with American voters, who are likelier now to be shunted into hyperpartisan districts drawn in each state to benefit the party in power. A great carving could effectively dilute the power of millions, especially minority voters, and make partisan primaries more important than general elections when it comes to choosing leaders.”

Wall Street Journal: “Republican leaders are pushing for Southern states to rapidly redraw congressional maps ahead of the midterm elections, on the heels of a Supreme Court decision that sharply curbed the use of race in crafting electoral districts.”

“The court’s ruling effectively extends a cycle of tit-for-tat redistricting in which Republican- and Democratic-led states have scrambled to create new districts that could give their party an edge in the fight for control of the House of Representatives in November.”

“Now cartographers, state legislators—and lawyers—are heading into extra time.”

Rick Hasen: “After the Supreme Court’s six Republican-appointed justices effectively dismantled a key part of the Voting Rights Act on Wednesday,attention has turned to how Republican legislatures may dismantle districts that help minority voters elect their candidate of choice and replace those districts with Republican gerrymanders.”

“But as bad as the redistricting prospects are for minority voters in Republican-run states after Louisiana v. Callais — and they are very bad — it’s worth considering how Democratic-run states too will have an incentive to dismantle some of these districts. The battle over whether to maximize the number of Democratic seats or provide effective minority representation in Congress and other legislative bodies could threaten the Democratic Party’s internal cohesion and long-term prospects.”

“To understand how clashes may emerge, begin with the fact that Black voters are far and away the most reliable source of Democratic support — in some places, Democrats win 90% of Black voters.”

Politico: “Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday he supported delaying House elections in his home state of Louisiana after the Supreme Court invalidated the state’s congressional map Wednesday.”

Said Johnson: “The governor has no choice but to suspend it. The court has ruled our map unconstitutional.”
