Trump Signals Cease Fire with GOP Leaders

December 24, 2016 · 12:05 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump has, by all accounts, patched up his once-turbulent relationship with House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.). To fill top jobs in his administration, Trump has chosen five sitting lawmakers, as well as the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). And he has passed up opportunities to meddle in congressional business in ways that might have pleased his populist base but frustrated Republican leaders.”

“The detente in Trump’s war on GOP leaders reflects the unifying power of victory, the moderating influence of Vice President-elect Mike Pence and incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, and, most of all, a shared desire to make good on years of Republican campaign promises.”

“Donald Trump and his doctor claim he’s 6-foot-3, but his New York driver’s license says he’s actually an inch shorter. A copy of Trump’s license, obtained by Politico through an open-records request, lists the president-elect at 6-foot-2.”

Request on Gender Equality Rattles State Department

December 22, 2016 · 1:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team “asked employees at the State Department to submit details of programs aimed at promoting gender equality, including a list of the positions primarily focused on such issues, fanning fears within the agency that the incoming administration might roll back a cornerstone initiative of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,” the New York Times reports.

“It also asks for information on positions dedicated to those activities, as well as how much funding was directed to these programs in 2016. The responses were due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the same day the questionnaire was circulated within the department.”

Heitkamp ‘Likely’ to Stay In Senate

December 22, 2016 · 1:15 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) told Politico she is “likely” to remain in the Senate instead of joining Donald Trump’s administration, “robbing the GOP of a chance to easily turn the moderate Democrat’s Senate seat red by recruiting her for a plum executive-branch nomination.”

Democrats Prepare for Cabinet Showdown

December 22, 2016 · 1:12 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats are approaching the January confirmation battle over Donald Trump’s Cabinet as a chance to launch their political comeback and expose the president-elect as a fraud,” Politico reports.

“Lawmakers know they’re unlikely, at best, to stop any of Trump’s Cabinet picks from being installed. But they still see major opportunity in the confirmation hearings. The goal, according to lawmakers and aides: to depict Trump’s chosen inner circle of billionaires and conservative hard-liners as directly at odds with the working-class Americans he vowed to help.”

Conway Will Work In White House

December 22, 2016 · 7:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump has named Kellyanne Conway, his former campaign manager, as counselor to the president in the incoming administration, CNN reports.

New York Times: “Mr. Trump had wanted Ms. Conway to have a spokeswoman role in the administration. She declined that role and publicly discussed working with an outside political group backing the president, even as she held out for a West Wing position that would have a title on par with those of Reince Priebus and Stephen Bannon, the chief strategist.”

Financial Vetting Goes Slowly for Trump Cabinet Picks

December 22, 2016 · 7:09 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Moving some of President-elect Donald Trump’s highest-profile cabinet nominees — with their millions in assets and complex business arrangements — through an arduous financial disclosure examination has been unusually slow and may threaten the quick start for the administration promised by the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell,” the New York Times reports.

“Senate Democrats are concerned that their Republican colleagues will permit confirmations to proceed without the ethics safeguards that have been in place for decades. If that happens, Democrats will almost certainly move to delay swift confirmations.”

Trump Is Holding a Government ‘Casting Call’

December 22, 2016 · 7:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “To lead the Pentagon, Trump chose a rugged combat general, whom he compares to a historic one. At the United Nations, his ambassador will be a poised and elegant Indian American with a compelling immigrant backstory. As secretary of state, Trump tapped a neophyte to international diplomacy, but one whose silvery hair and boardroom bearing project authority.”

“The parade of potential job-seekers passing a bank of media cameras to board the elevators at Trump Tower has the feel of a casting call. It is no coincidence that a disproportionate share of the names most mentioned for jobs at the upper echelon of the Trump administration are familiar faces to obsessive viewers of cable news — of whom the president-elect is one.”

“Donald Trump plans to create a National Trade Council inside the White House to oversee industrial policy and is appointing a China hawk and one of the architects of the populist economic message to run the new group,” the Financial Times reports.

“Mr Trump has chosen Peter Navarro, a Harvard-trained economist, to head the NTC… The author of books such as Death by China and Crouching Tiger: What China’s Militarism Means for the World has for years warned that the US is engaged in an economic war with China and should adopt a more aggressive stance.”

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn is expected to be named special adviser to the president on overhauling federal regulations, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Icahn, who has spent the past four decades battling big companies as an activist investor, already has been wielding influence in President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team. He is playing a central role in selecting the next chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission… Interested candidates have reached out to him, and he is interviewing others at the request of Mr. Trump.”

Voters Expect Trump to Upend Obama Accomplishments

December 21, 2016 · 3:13 pm ET · Leave a Comment

While President Obama will leave office with high favorability and job approval ratings, a new USA Today/Suffolk poll finds 59% of voters expect that President-elect Donald Trump will dismantle Obama’s legacy, and many don’t seem to mind.

Key finding: Obama’s job approval rate was 54%, and yet 45% of those polled said that reversing his accomplishments would be a good thing, while 43% would disapprove.

Said pollster David Paleologos: “A majority of voters said that history will assess Barack Obama as a great or good president. And yet, there appears to be a disconnect, as so many voters are unconcerned that the job he did could be undone.”

Red State Democrats Targeted by Conservatives

“The prospect of brutal confirmation hearings has Republicans targeting red-state Democrats in hopes of softening opposition to some of Donald Trump’s most conservative Cabinet nominees — from Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions,” Politico reports.

“It’s an effort at early damage control, with Republicans aiming to protect their own from a Democratic onslaught that could cause lasting damage both to Trump administration officials and to the president-elect’s ability to push his ambitious legislative agenda through Congress.”

Rudy Giuliani said President-elect Donald Trump “didn’t forget about him when forming his administration,” The Hill reports.

Said Giuliani: “He offered me some cabinet positions, which I’m very very thankful for. It just didn’t work out.”

He added: “And at 72 years old, there was only one challenge I thought that really was left for me. The others wouldn’t have been a challenge.”
