New Jersey Lt. Governor Tahesha Way (D) “is expected to join the race for Mikie Sherrill’s congressional seat in New Jersey’s 11th district, adding a major contender to an already crowded Democratic field in a primary expected to be held in late January or early February,” the New Jersey Globe reports.
Christie Urging His Wife to Run for Congress
Former Gov. Chris Christie (R) is touting his wife as a potential challenger to Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) in New Jersey’s 11th district next year, the New Jersey Globe reports.
Christie launched the trial balloon at a book signing: “Listen, the state would be incredibly lucky if Mary Pat Christie would run for office. I’ve been trying to convince her that maybe she should run for Congress. I think she would be fabulous.”
Democrats Maintain Edge In New Jersey’s 11th
A new Monmouth poll in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district finds Mikie Sherrill (D) maintains her lead over Jay Webber (R), 48% to 44% among likely voters.
“The race stands at 50% for Sherrill and 43% for Webber using a model that incorporates a turnout surge in Democratic precincts. A model projecting lower overall turnout shows Sherrill with a 48% to 45% edge over Webber.”
Democratic Enthusiasm Tilts Some GOP Districts
A new Monmouth poll in eight competitive congressional districts — CA-48, PA-1, PA-17, NJ-3, NJ-11, OH-12, VA-10 and WV-3 — finds support is evenly divided between the Democratic and the Republican candidates for Congress, 43% to 42%.
The Democratic advantage increases slightly among likely voters, 47% to 43%.
Key takeaway: Republicans routinely won these eight districts by double digit margins in recent election cycles.
Said pollster Patrick Murray: “These findings do not predict that Democrats are going to sweep these eight House contests. But they do indicate that the Republican candidate in each of these districts is facing an unprecedented challenge to hold that seat.”
Democrats Hold Lead In Key New Jersey District
A new Monmouth poll in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district finds Mikie Sherrill (D) with a slight lead over Jay Webber (R), 40% to 38% among likely voters.
“Neither candidate is particularly well-known at this point in the race, but Democratic enthusiasm is giving this traditionally red district a purplish hue. The poll also finds that the GOP tax reform plan does not play all that well in one of the richest congressional districts in the country.”
“The Democrat’s advantage widens when applying two different likely voter models. A historical midterm model gives Sherrill a 44% to 40% lead, while a model that includes a turnout surge in Democratic precincts gives Sherrill a 45% to 39% lead.”
