Trump Acted on Impulse to Fire Comey

May 11, 2017 · 7:07 am ET · Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “The answers to why Trump canned Comey are becoming clear: The president was filled with grievance about the FBI probe and acted on impulse without clearly thinking through the fallout, numerous sources tell me.”

Playbook: “The past 48 hours has been a political and P.R. disaster for President Trump and the White House. By all accounts, Trump’s decision to dump Comey wasn’t based on a methodical review of the facts. Instead, it appears like many of Trump’s more controversial decisions to be a gut driven response based purely on personal animus in this case — Comey wasn’t loyal enough, didn’t support Trump’s claims that former President Obama wiretapped him and wasn’t moving fast enough to find those responsible for leaks about Trump.”

Sessions Emerges as Most Valuable Trump Ally

May 11, 2017 · 6:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “The drama was fresh evidence of Sessions’ role as a critical political player in the Trump cabinet. He has exhibited all the qualities of loyalty Trump most prizes: He was the first senator to endorse him, one of the only members of the upper chamber to embrace him enthusiastically during the presidential campaign, and, as his involvement in the Comey controversy demonstrates, has proved that he is willing to thrust himself into the breach and take political hits to advance the president’s interests.”

“The president has rewarded that loyalty with trust. At the Department of Justice, he now enjoys full authority over the federal law enforcement apparatus.”

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein “threatened to resign after the narrative emerging from the White House on Tuesday evening cast him as a prime mover of the decision to fire Comey and that the president acted only on his recommendation,” the Washington Post reports.

Comey Wouldn’t Let Trump Review His Testimony

May 10, 2017 · 11:32 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The anger behind Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday had been building for months, but a turning point came when Comey refused to preview for top Trump aides his planned testimony to a Senate panel,” Reuters reports.

“Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had wanted a heads-up from Comey about what he would say at a May 3 hearing… When Comey refused, Trump and his aides considered that an act of insubordination and it was one of the catalysts to Trump’s decision this week to fire the FBI director.”

Russia Investigation Was Heating Up

May 10, 2017 · 10:50 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“In the weeks before President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, a federal investigation into potential collusion between Trump associates and the Russian government was heating up, as Mr. Comey became increasingly occupied with the probe,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Comey started receiving daily instead of weekly updates on the investigation, beginning at least three weeks ago, according to people with knowledge of the matter and the progress of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe. Mr. Comey was concerned by information showing possible evidence of collusion, according to these people.”

May 10, 2017 · 10:44 pm ET · Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll asked respondents for the first word that comes to mind when they think of President Trump. The answer given more times than any other was “idiot,” followed by “incompetent” and “liar.”

Why Trump Really Fired Comey

May 10, 2017 · 10:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump had long questioned Comey’s loyalty and judgment, and was infuriated by what he viewed as the director’s lack of action in recent weeks on leaks from within the federal government. By last weekend, he had made up his mind: Comey had to go.”

“Trump was angry that Comey would not support his baseless claim that President Barack Obama had his campaign offices wiretapped. Trump was frustrated when Comey revealed in Senate testimony the breadth of the counterintelligence investigation into Russia’s effort to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential election. And he fumed that Comey was giving too much attention to the Russia probe and not enough to investigating leaks to journalists.”

Politico: “Senior aides and other associates who know the president say the firing was triggered not by any one event but rather by the president’s growing frustration with the Russia investigation, negative media coverage and the growing feeling that he couldn’t control Comey, who was a near-constant presence on television in recent days.”

Graduates Greet Education Secretary with Turned Backs

May 10, 2017 · 10:28 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Betsy DeVos went to Bethune-Cookman University on Wednesday, knowing her first commencement address as secretary of education could get ugly at the historically black institute of higher education,” the New York Times reports.

“It did — fast. Over sporadic heckling, and at some points to the backs of gown-clad graduates refusing to face her.”

Trump Auditions New Spokesperson

“Press secretary Sean Spicer’s absence from the briefing room on Wednesday comes at a tenuous time, as President Donald Trump has asked senior advisers for weeks if he needs to change the face of his administration,” Politico reports.

“Trump was pleased with deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ performance on Friday, when she first filled in for Spicer on camera during the midday briefing, three White House aides said, adding that he has talked about grooming her for Spicer’s more visible role.”

Comey Invited to Testify Before Senate Panel

May 10, 2017 · 3:06 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Ousted FBI Director James Comey has been invited to testify in a closed session next Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee,” Politico reports.

“The session would provide a first chance for Comey to weigh in on the circumstances of his firing and update senators behind closed doors on the status of the FBI’s investigation into allegations of coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia.”

FBI Agents Worry About Future of Russia Inquiry

May 10, 2017 · 3:03 pm ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Agents said they were stunned that Mr. Trump would fire Mr. Comey in the midst of an F.B.I. investigation into whether any of the president’s associates had conspired with Russia to swing the election in favor of Mr. Trump. Some said in interviews that news of the firing felt like a gut punch. Others wondered whether they would be able to continue the inquiry.”

“One senior F.B.I. official said that the president had severely damaged his standing among agents, many of whom are conservative and supported Mr. Trump as a candidate. Agents were angered by the way Mr. Trump fired Mr. Comey, who learned of his dismissal from television reports while he was in Los Angeles. They called it disrespectful.”

“And agents flatly rejected the assertion Wednesday by a White House spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee, during a briefing with reporters, that the F.B.I.’s rank-and-file supported the sudden firing of Mr. Comey.”

McConnell Rejects Call for Special Prosecutor

May 10, 2017 · 2:58 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Before President Trump was even sworn into office, congressional Republicans made a pledge: They would be a check on executive power, they said, often making the independence of the legislative branch a centerpiece of their own election campaigns last year,” the New York Times reports.

“But on Wednesday, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the majority leader, sought to give the beleaguered administration significant cover, strongly defending the firing of the F.B.I. director, James Comey, and resisting calls to challenge Mr. Trump and support a broader inquiry of Russian interference in the election.”

Politico: “After a flurry of GOP statements Tuesday night criticizing Trump for axing Comey so suddenly, there were no new Republican calls on Wednesday for a special prosecutor or select committee to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections or possible collusion with the Trump campaign.”

Trump Approval Sinks to Near-Record Low

May 10, 2017 · 1:50 pm ET · Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll finds President Trump with a near-record negative 36% to 58% job approval rating.

Said pollster Tim Malloy: “There is no way to spin or sugarcoat these sagging numbers. The erosion of white men, white voters without college degrees and independent voters, the declaration by voters that President Donald Trump’s first 100 days were mainly a failure and deepening concerns about Trump’s honesty, intelligence and level headedness are red flags that the administration simply can’t brush away.”

White House Scrambled to Defend Trump on Comey

May 10, 2017 · 1:44 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Sources at the White House described scenes of confusion in the hours following news of Trump firing Comey. Internally, at least at a fairly senior level, people were scrambling to figure out what happened.”

“The firing was done in such haste that his own comms shop couldn’t catch up, and the vast majority of White House staff learned about it on TV when the news broke, per White House sources. There are reports of a meeting in Spicer’s office after they announced the news, which happened Chuck Schumer was on TV giving his response to the news of the firing.”

Said one official: “It’s insane. The whole thing is just insane.”

Matt Drudge: “Trump advisers leaking to media are now deliberately sabotaging presidency. Major house cleaning needed for survival.”

Russian Diplomat Mocks America’s ‘Humiliating’ Situation

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said “it is humiliating for the American people to realize that the Russian federation is controlling the situation in America” during a press conference at the Russian Embassy, Axios reports.

Said Labrov: “I believe that politicians are damaging the political system of the U.S. trying to pretend that someone is controlling America from the outside.”

On his conversation with President Trump this morning: “He didn’t raise the issue of Russia’s involvement into America’s elections last year.”

Republicans Close Ranks Behind Trump

May 10, 2017 · 1:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “In the hours since President Trump sacked James Comey as FBI director, the splashiest headlines have gone to Republican critics of the move… But for most elected Republicans, and on conservative-leaning media, the story last night and today has been a cut-and-dry case of Democratic Party hypocrisy. Despite the White House’s deer-in-headlights PR response to questions, most of the president’s allies have robustly defended him, syncing up with the preferred story line that the president did what most Americans had been craving.”
