Trump Suddenly Warns Syria

June 26, 2017 · 11:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

The White House said that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria appeared to be preparing another chemical weapons attack, and warned that he would “pay a heavy price” if one took place, the New York Times reports.

“Several military officials who were reached late Monday said they had been caught off guard by the White House statement, but it was unclear how closely held the intelligence regarding a potential chemical attack was.”

Buzzfeed News: “Five defense officials… said they not only did not know where the potential chemical attack would come from, but they were unaware the White House was planning to release the statement.”

“You’re not gonna get 49. You’re either gonna get 50 or probably 35.”

— Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), quoted by Vox, adding that the CBO estimates on the GOP health care bill “are going to make it harder to get to 50, not easier.”

Senate Health Bill Near Collapse

June 26, 2017 · 9:15 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The Senate bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act was edging toward collapse on Monday after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said it would increase the number of people without health insurance by 22 million by 2026,” the New York Times reports.

“Two Republicans, Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, said Monday that they would vote against even debating the health care bill, joining Senator Dean Heller of Nevada, who made the same pledge on Friday. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin hinted he, too, would probably oppose taking up the bill on an expected procedural vote as early as Tuesday, meaning a collapse could be imminent.”

Said Paul: “It’s worse to pass a bad bill than pass no bill.”

U.S. Image Suffers Around the World

June 26, 2017 · 9:10 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Although he has only been in office a few months, Donald Trump’s presidency has had a major impact on how the world sees the United States. Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the U.S. have declined steeply in many nations. According to a new Pew Research Center survey spanning 37 nations, a median of just 22% has confidence in Trump to do the right thing when it comes to international affairs.”

“This stands in contrast to the final years of Barack Obama’s presidency, when a median of 64% expressed confidence in Trump’s predecessor to direct America’s role in the world.”

Pentagon May Help Deport Foreign-Born Recruits

June 26, 2017 · 9:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon is considering a plan to cancel enlistment contracts for 1,000 foreign-born recruits without legal immigration status, knowingly exposing them to deportation,” the Washington Post reports.

“The undated action memo, prepared for Defense Secretary Jim Mattis by personnel and intelligence officials at the Pentagon… describes potential security threats of immigrants recruited in a program designed to award fast-tracked citizenship in exchange for urgently needed medical and language skills.”

Huckabee Says GOP Senate Making ‘Major Blunders’

June 26, 2017 · 7:52 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Mike Huckabee told Fox News that GOP senators appear to be “on the pathway to making some major blunders” with their health care measure.

Said Huckabee: “Something that is worse than not getting it down quickly is getting it down wrong.”

He added: “I think Republicans are going to have to suck it up and say, “This isn’t going to get a lot cheaper, it can’t, it won’t.'”

Collins Won’t Vote for GOP Health Care Bill

June 26, 2017 · 7:45 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) tweeted that she would be voting “no” on the Senate health care bill after the CBO estimated that 22 million fewer people would be covered under the plan.

She said she wanted to “fix the flaws in ACA. CBO analysis shows Senate bill won’t do it. I will vote no.”

Axios: “Collins is the sixth senator to come out against the bill in its current form, and the third to say she’ll vote against a motion to bring it up for a vote. That means the bill is stalled unless changes are made to convince senators to change their votes.”

Poor People Would Pay More for Less

Sarah Kliff: “The CBO report is a dense 49-page document that you can read here. But you can find its clearest explanation of the Senate bill on page 48. This is where the CBO report explains how premiums would change for low- and middle-income Americans — and what type of health insurance they would get for those monthly payments.”

“This page shows, in no uncertain terms, that low-income Americans would be asked to pay higher premiums for worse health insurance coverage.”

FBI Has Questioned Trump Adviser at Length

June 26, 2017 · 6:24 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“FBI agents have repeatedly questioned former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page about his contacts with Russians and his interactions with the Trump campaign,” the Washington Post reports.

“Over a series of five meetings in March, totaling about 10 hours of questioning, Page repeatedly denied wrongdoing when asked about allegations that he may have acted as a kind of go-between for Russia and the Trump campaign.”

“Because it is against the law for an individual to lie to FBI agents about a material issue under investigation, many lawyers recommend their clients not sit for interviews with the bureau without a lawyer present. Page said he spoke without a lawyer and wasn’t concerned about the risks because he told the truth.”

China Is Reading Its Citizens’ Faces

June 26, 2017 · 6:17 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Facial-recognition technology, once a specter of dystopian science fiction, is becoming a feature of daily life in China, where authorities are using it on streets, in subway stations, at airports and at border crossings in a vast experiment in social engineering. Their goal: to influence behavior and identify lawbreakers.”

“China is rushing to deploy new technologies to monitor its people in ways that would spook many in the U.S. and the West. Unfettered by privacy concerns or public debate, Beijing’s authoritarian leaders are installing iris scanners at security checkpoints in troubled regions and using sophisticated software to monitor ramblings on social media. By 2020, the government hopes to implement a national ‘social credit’ system that would assign every citizen a rating based how they behave at work, in public venues and in their financial dealings.”

22 Million Would Lose Coverage Under Senate Bill

June 26, 2017 · 4:25 pm ET · Leave a Comment

A new CBO report says the Senate bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act “would increase the number of people without health insurance by 22 million by 2026, a figure that is only slightly lower than the 23 million more uninsured that the House version would create,” the New York Times reports.

“Next year, 15 million more people would be uninsured compared with current law… The legislation would decrease federal deficits by a total of $321 billion over a decade.”

Washington Post: “The CBO’s analysis has been awaited as a crucial piece of evidence as McConnell and other Republican leaders try to hurry a vote on the bill this week. But they are navigating an expanding minefield of resistance from their own party’s moderate and conservative wings, while Democrats are united against it.”

Real Questions from Fox News to President Trump

June 26, 2017 · 4:04 pm ET · Leave a Comment

BuzzFeed compiles questions that Pete Hegseth of Fox News asked President Trump in a recent interview.

Here are some of the better ones:

HEGSETH: Mr. President, you face resistance on this bill; but, of course, you’ve faced resistance on the entirety of your agenda. Who’s been your biggest opponent? Has it been Democrats resisting? Has it been fake news media? Has it been deep state leaks? What’s — when you think about it, what holds it up the most?

HEGSETH: How frustrating is it to have former president Obama there, out there leading the resistance?

HEGSETH: Some people might say it’s – the level of anger is unprecedented, but it’s also unprecedented for a former president to come out the way President Obama has. He came out on Facebook recently, you may have seen it, he said you bill, Mr. President, “Not a healthcare bill, it’s a massive transfer of wealth; it’s going to harm Americans. It’s mean.” What do you say to the former President…

HEGSETH: I opened up the failing “New York Times” and “The Washington Post” this morning. No mention at all of this bill that you’re signing today. For veterans who are so passionate about this, it’s such a historic bill, are they going to cover this? And if they don’t, why don’t they cover it the way they cover every breathless scandal in the media today?

Kennedy Will Not Run for Connecticut Governor

June 26, 2017 · 2:14 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“There will be no Camelot in Connecticut in 2018: Ted Kennedy Jr. declared Monday that he is not running for governor,” the Hartford Courant reports.

“The possibility of a Kennedy on the ballot in 2018 tantalized some Democratic insiders. Having the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the son of former U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts on the gubernatorial ballot would have brought star power and national attention to what is already expected to be a hotly contested race.”

Doctor’s Group Says Bill Violates ‘Do No Harm’ Rule

June 26, 2017 · 1:24 pm ET · Leave a Comment

One of the nation’s largest healthcare lobbying groups Monday announced its opposition to the Senate’s ObamaCare repeal plan, warning that it could hurt the “most vulnerable citizens,” The Hill reports.

Said the American Medical Association: “Medicine has long operated under the precept of Primum non nocere, or ‘first, do no harm.’ The draft legislation violates that standard on many levels.”

Gorsuch Among the Most Conservative Justices

June 26, 2017 · 11:34 am ET · Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “There was a lot of dissembling when Justice Gorsuch was nominated to the Supreme Court, that he was some kind of blank slate, without preconceived ideas about how he would rule as a Supreme Court Justice. Of course, this was a ruse to blunt public criticism. Many of us knew that he would be a very conservative Justice—the only question is if he will be more like Scalia, Thomas, or Alito.”

“Justice Gorsuch has been on the Court only a few months, and only heard one month’s worth of oral arguments. But today, on the last day of the Supreme Court’s term, we got a very good indication he will be most like Justice Scalia, and often voting with Justices Thomas and Alito, making Justice Gorsuch one of the most, or most, conservative Justices.”
