There’s No Modern Precedent for This Democratic Tsunami

November 4, 2026 · 10:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “This was an electoral tsunami: a complete collapse of the Republican coalition and the largest victory by either party in half a century.”

“When all the vote is in and counted, Democrats will win the national popular vote in all House races combined by 13 percentage points, according to our estimates. That would be the largest margin of victory since the post-Watergate elections in 1974 and 1976.”

“And by one measure, it’s even larger: Democrats could flip as many as seven Senate seats that leaned Republican by more than 10 points in the previous presidential election.”

“There’s simply no modern precedent for either party to do so well in states that had leaned so heavily toward the other side.”

Mississippi Senate Race Unresolved

November 4, 2026 · 10:55 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Senate midterm race in deep-red Mississippi remains unresolved Wednesday morning, with Democrat Scott Colom mounting a surprisingly competitive challenge to incumbent GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith,” CBS News reports.

“With 96% of the vote in, just a few dozen votes separated the candidates, a stunningly close result in the Magnolia State.”

Alaska Senate Race Unresolved

November 4, 2026 · 10:50 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Senate race in Alaska remains unresolved Wednesday, as a contest that has garnered widespread attention over the two candidates named Dan Sullivan faces a lengthy ballot-counting process,” CBS News reports.

“The count in Alaska could stretch on. Alaska has a ranked-choice voting system, which allows voters to rank as many or as few candidates as they’d like in order of preference. If no candidate secures support from more than 50% of voters as their top choice, the count goes to a second round.”

“The ranked-choice tabulation doesn’t occur until the last counting of ballots 15 days after Election Day, meaning the process could drag on for weeks if one candidate does not secure more than 50% of first-place support on the ballot.”

Election Deniers Not Contesting Their Massive Losses

Susan Collins Didn’t Have a Chance

November 4, 2026 · 10:46 am ET · Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Collins betrayed no hint of concern. Around 9:40 p.m., she made a long, beaming pass through the party. As Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ filled the room, Collins accepted hugs and handshakes, small gifts and words of encouragement. She peered at the laptop screen of a Republican staffer who showed her a rosy analysis of the latest returns. Maine counts its votes at an agonizing pace, and as Collins worked the crowd, it was still possible for Republicans to believe she might defy the odds one more time.”

“Collins’s stroll around the ballroom was, in retrospect, not a victory lap but a farewell. She would not return to the party. Shortly after midnight, she called the Democrat Troy Jackson to congratulate him on his win. By that late hour, the ballroom throng had thinned to just a few dozen people, and Collins made no concession speech.”

Why Republicans Lost so Big

November 4, 2026 · 10:34 am ET · Leave a Comment

Idrees Kahloon: “How did the GOP’s situation get so bad? A moralizing account might say that Trump is getting just deserts for his precedent-breaking behavior in office—the great personal enrichment, the weaponization of the justice system against his enemies, the dismantling of agencies without congressional consent. But this assumes too much about the propriety of American voters—who, after all, returned the president to office after he had tried to overturn his election loss in 2020.”

“The more obvious explanation for Republicans’ poor performance is economic. Having come to office by exploiting discontent with inflation under Joe Biden, Trump seemed to think that the same rules would not apply to him while in office.”

Mike Johnson Won’t Run for GOP Leader

“Speaker Mike Johnson told his staff today on a call that he does not plan to run for minority leader and will step aside, according to two sources familiar with the matter,” the Washington Sun reports.

It seems highly unlikely he’ll remain in Congress either.

Trump Unlikely to Challenge Results

November 4, 2026 · 10:21 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Advisers to President Donald Trump privately acknowledge that the outcome of Tuesday’s elections were so favorable to Democrats that they do not anticipate the Trump administration pushing to challenge results on a broad scale – if at all,” CNN reports.

Said a Trump adviser: “It was essentially too big to rig.”

Inside the Democrats’ Plans to Take On Trump

November 4, 2026 · 9:49 am ET · Leave a Comment

Time: “It was a coast-to-coast rout that exceeded the Democrats’ high expectations. As of Wednesday morning, the party had flipped at least 29 House seats, including decisive victories in swing districts in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Virginia, while Senate victories in deep red states like Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, and Iowa gave them control of the upper chamber.”

“The results were a decisive rebuke of a President whose handling of the economy, rising prices, and the war with Iran had fueled widespread discontent, and who spent the closing days of the campaign musing about candidates’ anatomy and dismissing Americans’ concerns over their bottom line.”

“For the first time since Trump returned to Washington, Democrats will be empowered to do more than stomp and shout. They will be able to set the legislative agenda in both chambers of Congress, compel testimony from Administration officials, investigate allegations of corruption, force Republicans to take difficult votes, and block new Cabinet nominees or federal judges.”

Too Big to Rig

November 4, 2026 · 9:48 am ET · Leave a Comment

Andrew Egger: “The whole game changed last night. We’re all still grappling with what Democrats’ once-in-a-century rout will mean…. Trumpism has not been fully defeated, not yet. But one of its darkest elements has been smashed for good.”

“In 2020, Trump tried to steal a presidential election by sheer force. After he failed, he and his movement spent years systematically grinding down the institutions that got in his way. After his re-election, he stocked the government with loyalists and attempted to seize unprecedented federal control over elections. The inescapable question has hung in the air like a miasma: What happens if he tries to do it again?”

“Last night, those fears popped like a soap bubble. Whatever dirty tricks Trump might have been planning—and you can bet he was planning them—were trampled by the stampede of the Democratic wave, which was, to borrow a phrase, too big to rig.”

Another Bonus Quote of the Day

November 4, 2026 · 8:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

“You not only have to question the judgement of a man who would take a woman — an elderly woman, out of the car she was living in out of the parking lot in a church in Pennsylvania with her cats and put her in front of a video camera, and make that a TV ad in the gubernatorial race. We know what Vivek Ramaswamy is, and voters have judged him as such. But here is the real problem going forward. J.D. Vance stood 100 percent with Vivek Ramaswamy. Not only as a person and a candidate, but he stood behind that advertisement. And Vivek Ramaswamy will be forgotten. He is going to be sent to the dustbin of history. But J.D. Vance is going to be remembered, I think, for this campaign, for more than anything else, he stood by that ad, a man who wrote a book on Catholicism, stood behind that ad. It’s a disgrace.”

— Former Gov. Chris Christie (R), on ABC News.

Flashback Quote of the Day

November 4, 2026 · 8:19 am ET · Leave a Comment

A Big Win for Democracy

November 4, 2026 · 8:07 am ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “The best news of the night for democracy was that Republicans, as far as I’ve seen, conceded their losses in totally normal ways; even Trump accepted the results, at least for now.”

“Yes, that’s a low bar. But there were very legitimate fears that Trump and his allies would succeed in interfering with these elections, and he certainly tried before being beaten back by the states (including Republican elected officials in many cases) and the courts (again, including some Republican judges). To have Republicans accept loss is a very big deal.”

“Overall, the doomers were wrong, but the alarmists were very correct to draw attention to real dangers, many of which still exist. Still, it’s going to be even harder for Trump and other enemies of democracy to get very far in 2028, with Democrats holding so many key positions in so many states.”

A Republican Wipeout for the Ages

November 4, 2026 · 8:01 am ET · Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “It was ten years in the making, but Donald Trump finally got the electoral ass-kicking that he deserved. Voters of all stripes from every region of the country rejected the President, his agenda, and his party.”

“2026 was not a normal midterm. It was bigger than 2018, 2010, 2006, and 1994. Democrats are on track to win the largest popular vote margin since 1974 — the first midterm after Watergate (which is fitting on many levels).”

“Democrats took the House and flipped the Senate. Republicans lost everywhere. Democrats flipped states that Trump won by more than 15 points and won districts that were never supposed to be competitive. We elected a Black woman governor of Georgia, a Latina in Texas. Democrats swept the statewide offices in Georgia and Texas and now have governing trifectas in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.”

It Wasn’t (Just) the Economy, Stupid

November 4, 2026 · 7:56 am ET · Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “What happened last night was no ordinary election. It was a mass affirmation that most Americans still believe in our nation’s basic values, and a mass rejection of a movement that wants to destroy everything our nation stands for. And no, it wasn’t just economic dissatisfaction.”

“Yes, Trumpflation created by tariffs and the Iran debacle helped. But an election swung by public anger over high prices looks like 2024, when Trump won the popular vote by 1.5 percentage points. Last night Democrats appear to have won the popular vote by 13 -14 percentage points.”
