McConnell Has Most to Lose In Alabama’s Special Election

August 15, 2017 · 7:13 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The special Senate election in Alabama is a crucial test of President Trump’s influence with Republican primary voters but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has the most to lose there on Tuesday,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“Trump endorsed appointed Sen. Luther Strange in what is essentially a three-man contest… But it’s McConnell’s credibility on the line after his affiliated super PAC and associated nonprofit organization invested millions of dollars to boost Strange over Rep. Mo Brooks and Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.”

Strange Struggling to Make Runoff

August 13, 2017 · 9:13 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) “wields an endorsement from the president of the United States, is the beneficiary of a multimillion-dollar campaign from allies of Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, and has the backing of influential conservative interest groups like the National Rifle Association,” the New York Times reports.

“But Mr. Strange is wheezing into Tuesday’s Republican Senate primary here. He is grasping to secure a second-place finish and a slot in a September runoff with Roy S. Moore, the twice-deposed former State Supreme Court justice and evangelical-voter favorite who is expected to be the top vote-getter but may fall short of the majority needed to win outright.”

Roy Moore Suggests America Is Evil

August 11, 2017 · 7:46 am ET · Leave a Comment

When The Guardian told Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) that Ronald Reagan once called Russia “the focus of evil in the modern world,” Moore replied, “You could say that very well about America, couldn’t you?”

He added: “We promote a lot of bad things,” specifically citing same-sex marriage.

When the reporter suggested that’s an argument Vladimir Putin makes, Moore said, “Well, then maybe Putin is right. Maybe he’s more akin to me than I know.”

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said he is projecting that 20% to 25% of voters will go to the polls on August 15, the AP reports.

“Merrill said a typical primary brings turnout of 30% to 32%. The closely watched race features crowded fields and heated matchups, particularly on the Republican side. However, the late summer special election comes at a time that state voters aren’t accustomed to going to the polls.”

McConnell Intervenes In Alabama Special Election

July 31, 2017 · 7:08 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “The Republican leader is aiming to thwart Rep. Mo Brooks and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore in a special election in Alabama next month. Both men are campaigning against McConnell as a despised symbol of the establishment — and both would exacerbate his already stiff challenge wrangling his GOP conference. McConnell is responding in kind.”

“His super PAC is set to spend much as $8 million to boost his favored candidate, recently-appointed Republican Sen. Luther Strange. McConnell has activated his sprawling donor network and pressed the White House for more resources. And the [NRSC], the Senate GOP campaign arm which McConnell controls, has warned consultants they’ll be cut off from future work if they assist Strange’s opponents.”

Brooks Would Vote to Oust McConnell

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who is running in a special Senate election in Alabama, said he will not vote to keep Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as majority leader if he wins the race, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Brooks: “Inside the Republican conference, Mitch McConnell has got to go. He’s the head of the swamp of the U.S. Senate.”

Republicans Rally Around Strange

May 27, 2017 · 10:47 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Luther Strange’s tenure in the Senate is not even four months old, having been handed his Alabama seat by a scandal-plagued governor who resigned on the cusp of impeachment by lawmakers in Montgomery. But Republicans in Washington are going all out to rescue Strange in his campaign this year, treating him like a beloved Senate veteran,” Politico reports.

“The multimillion-dollar push in a state that Democrats have almost no chance of winning is intended to help Strange muscle through a crowded primary field that includes two bomb-throwing conservatives apt to cause Mitch McConnell some major headaches should they defeat the appointed senator.”

Roy Moore (R) announced he is resigning from his position as the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court to run in the special election for U.S. Senate, the Birmingham News reports.

Said Moore: “My position has always been God first, family then country. I share the vision of President Donald Trump to make America great again. We can make America great again, we’ve got to make America good again.”

Moore said he has submitted his papers to resign from the state supreme court, a position he was suspended from for the remainder of his term.

Strange Now Likely to Face Crowded Primary

April 19, 2017 · 10:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“With less than 10 weeks of Capitol Hill experience under his belt, Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) suddenly faces a special-election primary in just four months and with far more serious vulnerabilities,” National Journal reports.

“Gov. Kay Ivey (R) on Tuesday moved up the special election for the seat from 2018 to 2017. The decision came a week after former Gov. Robert Bentley resigned amid a scandal involving an alleged affair, and the messy exit is renewing concerns about Strange’s Senate appointment.”

“Alabama Republicans predicted that the earlier election timeline would result in a crowded, free-for-all primary that would leave Strange significantly more at risk.”

Strange Appointed to Senate Seat Vacated by Sessions

February 9, 2017 · 8:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) named state Attorney General Luther Strange (R) to the U.S. Senate seat left empty by Jeff Sessions, the AP reports.

“In elevating Strange to the U.S. Senate, Bentley also will have the authority to appoint a state attorney general to fulfill the remainder of Strange’s term. The appointment comes two months after Strange asked an Alabama House committee to pause an impeachment probe of Bentley, who was accused last year of having an affair with a onetime top political adviser.”

Bentley Expected to Pick Strange for Senate Seat

February 8, 2017 · 7:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) is strongly leaning toward picking Attorney General Luther Strange to replace Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) after his expected confirmation to become United States Attorney General, Politico reports.

“One possible advantage of appointing Strange, this operative said, is that Bentley — who has been implicated in a tawdry sex scandal and was under an impeachment investigation by the state legislature — gets to appoint a new attorney general who might be less inclined to prosecute him.”

Bentley Could Appoint AG Investigating Him to Senate

February 3, 2017 · 9:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) “has narrowed the list of possible replacements for Jeff Sessions to six names, including that of one state official who could be investigating the very governor that would appoint him to the U.S. Senate,” the Birmingham News reports.

The inclusion of Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange (R) on the list has raised questions since Strange has been investigating Bentley in connection to possible impeachment offenses surrounding his relationship with former adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason. If Bentley appoints Strange to the U.S. Senate, the governor will then be able to appoint his successor.
