Christie Insists Trump Respects Him

October 23, 2017 at 8:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jason Zengerle: “Christie insists that he and Trump have no problems with each other — that, in fact, they’ve been friends for years — and it’s obviously important to him that people know he views himself and the businessman turned president as peers. … Christie says of Trump: ‘He gets mad at me at times, he yells at me at times, but he respects me.’ Christie adds that he often yells back at Trump, although ‘less now that he’s president.’”

“Indeed, it’s conventional wisdom among political insiders that Christie’s problem isn’t so much with Trump as it is with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, whose father Christie sent to prison when Christie was a federal prosecutor.”

Why Christie Didn’t Get a Cabinet Post

September 8, 2017 at 12:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Bannon told CBS News that Gov. Chris Christie (R) wasn’t considered for a Cabinet position in President Trump’s administration because he failed to offer support after the release of the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape.

Bannon said he “took names” of those who abandoned Trump: “You know, I’m Irish. I gotta get my black book and I got ’em. Christie, because of Billy Bush weekend, was not looked at for a Cabinet position.”

He added: “I told him the plane leaves at 11 o’ clock in the morning. If you make the plane, you make the team. He didn’t make the plane.”

Christie Stuck at Historic Low Approval

September 1, 2017 at 6:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Rutgers-Eagleton poll finds New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) approval rate at just 16%.

“The governor has long lost the support of the state’s Democrats and unaffiliated voters, which make up a majority of New Jersey’s voting bloc. But making matters worse for the Republican governor, 50 percent of the state’s GOP residents have an unfavorable view of him.”

Christie Won’t Appoint Himself to Senate Seat

August 29, 2017 at 6:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he probably wouldn’t appoint himself to the U.S. Senate if Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) were to resign following his federal corruption trial, Politico reports.

Said Christie: “I don’t see that happening. I really do believe that some of us are built for executive positions and some of us are built for legislative positions. I think I’m much more of an executive branch kind of guy.”

Christie Could Pick a Senator Before He Leaves

July 20, 2017 at 5:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) “is the most unpopular governor in the country, but in his last days in office he may get to exercise enormous influence nationally: Choosing a successor to embattled Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), which could result in a Republican senator, at least temporarily, from deep-blue New Jersey,” Politico reports.

Menendez “goes on trial for corruption in September, and there are two scenarios that could see him leave Washington before Christie is term-limited out of office in January: If Menendez is convicted and the Senate acts quickly to expel him, or if he cuts a plea deal and leaves office even earlier.”

Christie Booed After Catching Foul Ball

July 19, 2017 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Daily News: “Christie, sitting in the third row behind the first base line, was able to make the catch after Cardinals second baseman Paul DeJong fouled off a pitch during the top of the third inning… Unfortunately for Christie, whose approval rating is down to 15%, the majority of fans in attendance didn’t appear to be too impressed with his catch — or the fact he appeared to give the ball to a young kid nearby — booing the unpopular governor after it became clear he was the one who caught DeJong’s foul ball.”

Said the TV announcer: “Nice to see him get from the beach to the ballpark.”

Gov. Chris Christie (R) said that Donald Trump Jr.’s 2016 meeting with a Russian attorney, saying it’s “probably against the law” to get opposition research for his father’s presidential campaign from a foreign country, the AP reports.

Said Christie: “I think, quite frankly, it’s probably against the law in addition to being inappropriate. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that we seem to have a frenzy of people jumping to conclusions.”

But Christie added that there’s no evidence the campaign obtained such research.

How Christie Fell Out of Favor with Trump

July 17, 2017 at 5:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Mail: “Donald Trump fell out with Chris Christie, a new book reveals, by screaming at him: ‘You know my number, just give it to the President, I don’t want your fucking phone.'”

“Trump became furious on election night when the New Jersey governor offered to use his own mobile phone to take a congratulatory call from Barack Obama. As a germophobe he was also horrified at the idea of having Christie’s phone next to his face.”

“Aides said that Christie’s move was the ‘ultimate mistake’ and one from which he ‘wouldn’t recover.'”

A new Monmouth poll finds just 15% of New Jersey adults approve of the job Chris Christie (R) is doing as governor while 80% disapprove.

Said pollster Patrick Murray: “It really is difficult to drive approval ratings into the single digits barring something like a criminal conviction. However, you have to admire Christie’s seeming tenacity for trying to get his numbers down to that level.”

Christie Doubles Down — Again — With No Apologies

July 4, 2017 at 8:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This is Chris Christie with nothing left to lose: Lounging on a deserted beach closed to the public due to his political gamesmanship, and mocking his detractors as his poll numbers sink toward single digits,” Politico reports.

“While Christie has always enjoyed the perks of office and tweaking his critics, the New Jersey governor has been especially brash in his showdown with Democratic lawmakers, leading to a state government shutdown right before the July 4th holiday.”

Christie Lied About Going to the Beach

July 3, 2017 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

At a news conference on the budget stalemate that has closed the New Jersey state government, Gov. Chris Christie (R) denied he went to the beach: “I didn’t. I didn’t get any sun today.”

However, the Newark Star-Ledger had proof to the contrary. Earlier that day, a photographer flew by Christie and his family on the beach — twice — while taking photos from the open door of a small plane.

July 2, 2017 at 4:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) “joined his family at a state-owned retreat in Island Beach State Park on Saturday night, less than 24 hours after ordering the closure of all state parks and beaches because of the budget impasse in Trenton,” Politico reports.

“Christie, his wife, his children and their guests have the run of the 10-mile barrier island, where police are turning away all others visitors over the long holiday weekend.”

Said Christie: “That’s because the governor has a residence at Island Beach. Others don’t. It’s just the way it goes. Run for governor and then you can have the residence.”

Christie Adds Government Shutdown to His Legacy

July 1, 2017 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chris Christie is heading into his final six months as governor presiding over New Jersey’s biggest government crisis in more than a decade: A shutdown that will literally turn the lights out in Trenton,” Politico reports.

“New Jersey lawmakers failed to pass a budget by the annual deadline at midnight last night, and Christie promptly issued an order sparking the closure of government offices and services deemed non-essential. State parks and beaches will likely be closed this morning, just in time for the holiday, as will motor vehicle offices. Courts could be closed come Monday. Tens of thousands of state government employees will be furloughed.”

Christie Says He Doesn’t Care About 15% Approval

June 21, 2017 at 8:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R), the least popular governor in New Jersey history, says he doesn’t care what people think of him because he’s not running for office.

Said Christie: “The poll that matters is when people actually go in and vote. It would be nice if people actually polled voters or people who are likely to vote, because everybody else’s opinion, quite frankly, doesn’t matter about whether you like a public official or you don’t — unless you’re willing to move forward and exercise that preference at the polling places.”
