Former Astronaut Launches Texas Senate Run

June 24, 2025 at 8:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Terry Virts, a retired NASA astronaut, is not a household name, even in his home of Houston. But the way he announced his campaign on Monday for Senator John Cornyn’s seat in Texas, taking a swing at both political parties, may be blazing a trail for Democratic candidates in 2026,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Virts’ official announcement video was revealing in two ways. It reflected the growing hunger among Democratic outsiders to take on President Trump. And it underscored how such outsiders believe the best way to do that is to also take on the Democratic leaders in Washington.”

Nasty Texas Primary Has Republicans in a Panic

June 23, 2025 at 5:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Texans are gearing up for an ugly primary between Cornyn, a two-decade senator arguably associated with the GOP of another era, and Paxton, a MAGA combatant who has prevailed in Texas politics despite repeated accusations of legal and ethical wrongdoing.”

“Their party is gearing up for a headache.”

“Republican leaders fear that nominating Paxton, who has an edge with the farthest-right voters active in primaries, could hand Democrats their best opportunity for a win in Texas in decades. A competitive Texas senate race in the general election, they warn, could cost Republicans upward of $250 million, forcing the party to put resources into a red-leaning state that could go elsewhere and potentially threatening their Senate majority.”

Joni Ernst’s Gaffe Becomes Rallying Cry for Democrats

June 16, 2025 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A one-sentence gaffe from Iowa’s junior senator has become a line of attack against Republicans nationally, with Democratic fundraising solicitations, political ads, social media and T-shirts now highlighting her words heading into the midterm elections,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Sen. Joni Ernst’s response of ‘we all are going to die’ to a constituent who was complaining about proposed Medicaid cuts in President Trump’s ‘one big, beautiful bill’ has also helped produce a 2026 GOP primary challenger for her and prompted several Iowa Democrats to announce bids for her seat.”

“The incident has shone a fresh spotlight on the Republican Party’s political vulnerabilities as well as Ernst’s uncertain political future, with some Iowa watchers wondering whether she will stand for re-election. She angered Trump’s MAGA allies last year, delayed her trademark summer motorcycle ride until the fall, and now has become the face of what Democrats paint as Republican cruelty toward poor people.”

Is California a Dress Rehearsal for Trump?

June 8, 2025 at 11:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “If Trump can incite disturbances in blue states before the midterm elections, he can assert emergency powers to impose federal control over the voting process, which is to say his control. Or he might suspend voting until, in his opinion, order has been restored. Either way, blue-state seats could be rendered vacant for some time.”
