Will the Left Keep Winning in the Midwest?

August 11, 2026 · 5:59 am ET · Leave a Comment

“The Democratic Party’s ascendant left flank, looking to build on its success in Michigan last week, faces fresh tests in two primaries in the Midwest on Tuesday,” the New York Times reports.

“A democratic socialist appears to be clearly ahead in the governor’s race in Wisconsin, and a progressive is facing off against a moderate in an expensive Senate race in Minnesota. Wisconsin, like Michigan, is a closely watched national battleground.”

“On the Republican side, President Trump’s choice to succeed Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina — Mr. Graham’s younger sister, Darline Graham — is running in a special primary election against four more experienced rivals. Despite Mr. Trump’s endorsement, a runoff is likely in the crowded race.”

CNN: Wisconsin weighs a democratic socialist governor and other key races to watch in Tuesday’s primaries.

“Democrats inside and outside Wisconsin are anxious about Tuesday’s primary election in the battleground state. Their worries can be summarized in two words: Francesca Hong,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The 37-year-old state representative and part-time bartender, a dues-paying member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has led in polls ahead of the final day of balloting for the Democratic nomination for governor in a race that has been one this year’s most chaotic.”

Joe Scarborough Says Democrats Are ‘Fumbling’ Again

August 10, 2026 · 11:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Joe Scarborough slammed Democrats for refusing to denounce the extremist views of some of the party’s most contentious figures this year, arguing that the political party is ‘fumbling the football at the two-yard line’ just like it did in 2024,” The Wrap reports.

Said Scarborough: “The Democratic Party has a choice to make. I said this day-in and day-out leading up to Kamala Harris’ election. You couldn’t watch an NFL game without seeing 300 ‘Taxpayers are going to pay for trans surgeries for convicts’ ads on NFL games.”

He added: “Even though they still pretend that did not move viewers, I think the Trump campaign spent $30 million on those ads, and it moved working class men, working class white men, working class Black men, working class Hispanic men.”

Fetterman Says El-Sayed Has Put Senate Seat in Play

August 10, 2026 · 9:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) warned that Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed could cost his party a must-hold Michigan Senate seat,” the New York Post reports.

Said Fetterman: “He has put, you know, that seat in play. And after Bernie Sanders and others created the disaster in Maine, and they pushed garbage person like Platner, and now they’ve pushed an individual like El-Sayed that’s been very proud of his very deeply anti-Israel views and proud to campaign with an avowed communist overall.”

He added: “He just has like this weird little man syndrome energy just going around insulting people. And, you know, that’s the kind of campaign that he’s run.”

Pelosi Wages War Over Her Succession

August 10, 2026 · 6:25 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Nancy Pelosi is unleashing her political machine to block one of California’s most prominent state lawmakers from replacing her in Congress, bringing an increasingly bitter feud to a head inside San Francisco’s Democratic establishment,” Politico reports.

”The latest clash erupted after Pelosi and her allies publicly blasted Scott Wiener’s campaign last week over an AI-powered chatbot imitating her preferred successor, San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, calling the bot ‘sexist’ and a source of ‘harmful racial tropes that echo Trump birtherism.'”

“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made a public video announcement over the weekend about a private matter: The congresswoman is freezing her eggs,” the Washington Post reports.

“The congresswoman said she was going public with her decision against the backdrop of steps by the Trump administration to curtail abortion access and some forms of reproductive care across the country. It also comes amid speculation that she could seek higher office.”

AOC Says Millennials Are Reshaping the Electorate

August 9, 2026 · 10:57 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said Sunday a ‘generational tidal wave’ of millennial voters is reshaping the electorate in the wake of recent primary elections,” ABC News reports.

Said Ocasio-Cortez: “Millennials are not punk kids anymore. We’re grown adults with mortgages and kids, and that generation is starting to be decisive at the polls, and there is anger at being ignored, sidelined, having our economic futures mortgaged by the generations that came before us on everything from the economy to climate, and we’re taking the reins.”

CNBC: Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t “ruled out” running for president or Senate in 2028.

A Democrat Sounds the Alarm On Christian Nationalism

August 9, 2026 · 5:52 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Representative Jared Huffman, Democrat of California, thought he was going to make himself a political pariah when he announced publicly that he did not believe in God,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Huffman, the only self-declared ‘humanist’ in Congress, found that constituents in his mostly liberal Northern California district were unfazed.”

“Now Mr. Huffman has written a book in which he takes on how religion influences politics in America, in which he argues that extreme Christian nationalism, embraced and enabled by influential Republicans, is the country’s most dangerous political movement. He also accuses many of his own Democratic colleagues of being ‘incapable’ of naming and confronting the threat.”

Kamala Harris Steals One of Trump’s Top Slogans

August 8, 2026 · 5:28 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Mediaite: “Former Vice President Kamala Harris has been urging Democratic voters to make the midterms ‘too big to rig,’ which might sound familiar, because it was one of President Donald Trump’s go-to slogans during his 2024 campaign.”

“Harris has ripped off the phrase and worked it into several of her speeches lately, including a Friday speech in New Orleans when she said Democrats have to win so handily it’s ‘too big to rig’ for the ‘cheating’ Republicans to do anything about it.”

“I know that it was a bitter end to this very long primary, but I also know that Haley brings the best of herself to her work. She is one of the most committed public servants that you’ll ever meet. She loves democracy like I love democracy, and whatever differences that we might have had in the primary, they pale in comparison to what unifies us.”

Why I Can’t Get Behind the Politics of Electability

August 7, 2026 · 9:35 am ET · Leave a Comment

Julia Azari: “We might be approaching peak electability season. Traditionally, there’s a bit of a lull before the general election campaigns really kick off, and there are a few more primaries to go. Abdul El-Sayed won the primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan, and Francesca Hong seems likely to win the Democratic nomination for governor in Wisconsin next week (though, who knows).”

“As I’ve mentioned before, electability tends to be the go-to argument for more moderate candidates endorsed by whatever we might term the party ‘establishment.’ The fact that politicians talk about electability rather than taking actual policy positions isn’t terribly surprising, but it’s still disappointing to see the concept crowd out more substantive arguments.”

Said Stevens: “Everything that needed to be said in the primary was said. It’s a big tent party.”

She added: “Abdul’s got a big campaign to run. We did the unity deal. My focus here is, no Rogers. No Republicans. Abdul and I had our primary. It’s over. It’s over.”

Liberals Are Now Fighting a Two-Front War

August 6, 2026 · 11:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “When left-wing insurgents defeated a trio of progressive House members in New York, the House Democratic leadership suffered merely an embarrassment. Last night’s primary election in Michigan, by comparison, is an outright catastrophe for the party’s leaders. The Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated the four-term Representative Haley Stevens, has attacked the party as corrupt, offends some of its heretofore-cherished principles, and is currently trailing the Republican candidate in a race to hold a Democratic seat that ought to have been safe this year.”

“Parties generally follow bitter primaries with talk of coming together and moving forward. But the center-left liberals who have run the Democratic Party for decades need to be honest with themselves: They just suffered a crushing blow, and more will come unless they quickly absorb bracing lessons from this debacle.”

“Democrats should use Congress’ August recess to lean into economic populism and take on corporate interests — not just ‘simply oppose Trump and his billionaire friends,’ according to a memo by a quartet of progressives,” Semafor reports.

Wrote the senators: “If Democrats are going to be the party of working people, we have to prove that we can be trusted to unrig the system by confronting the elites who are doing the rigging.”

Are Montana Democrats Abandoning Their Own Candidate?

August 6, 2026 · 5:23 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Democrats are facing an unusual obstacle in their push to create as many paths to a Senate majority as possible this fall: a Democratic nominee who refuses to quit,” NOTUS reports.

“Democrat Alani Bankhead is set to face Republican Kurt Alme in Montana’s Senate election — the kind of race that would be a reach for Democrats in a normal year but could be on the table in a favorable political environment this year. The problem is Democrats are rallying behind independent candidate Seth Bodnar, who they think actually makes that long shot a possibility.”

“But with both candidates running, beating Alme is nearly impossible.”
