Is This Trump’s Backup Plan?

September 1, 2016 · 10:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Mother Jones: “This spring, as Donald Trump battled Ted Cruz in the heated Republican primary campaign, the mogul was also tending to his day job, with his business empire staking a claim to some new corporate territory. On April 11—a day when media reports noted Trump had been oddly silent and out of sight following his recent defeat in the Wisconsin primary—a Trump-owned company applied for a trademark on a brand new hotel concept. It was dubbed ‘American Idea.'”

“According to the trademark filing made by DTTM Operations LLC, a Delaware-based company Trump set up in January to manage his trademarks, the GOP nominee was reserving ‘American Idea’ for use in an unspecified hotel services, spa, and/or personal concierge business. Could it be that the candidate running under the banner of ‘Make America Great Again’ was devising a plan to capitalize on Trump-style patriotism for a new hotel or chain of hotels with some sort of America theme? Was this Plan B? A way to convert his campaign into a commercial success, if voters fail to elect him the nation’s next CEO?”

Trump Dealt with People Who Had Mob Ties

September 1, 2016 · 9:56 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump, as a builder in New York and Atlantic City decades ago, sometimes dealt with people who had ties to organized crime,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“They included a man law enforcement called an agent of the Philadelphia mob; a gambler convicted of tax fraud; a union leader found guilty of racketeering; and a real-estate developer convicted in a stock scheme that involved Mafiosi.”

Trump said he either had only cursory relationships with them or wasn’t aware of their ties at the time, calling himself “the cleanest guy there is.”

Trump Had Been Planning Mexico Trip for Weeks

August 31, 2016 · 9:15 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s visit to Mexico was not hastily put together, but the result of a couple of weeks of closely guarded work,” sources close to the campaign told NBC News.

“Trump insiders quietly reached out to officials in Mexico with the goal being to prompt an invitation from President Enrique Peña Nieto to meet Trump in person… Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner led the effort to secure a meeting, the sources said. With receptive signals coming back from Mexico, Team Trump waited for the formal invitation they had set in motion.”

Mexican President Contradicts Trump

August 31, 2016 · 8:03 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump swept into Mexico City on a politically perilous mission to prove his mettle as a negotiator by facing a nation that he has repeatedly denigrated and has promised to compel to pay for a border wall,” the New York Times reports.

“But Mr. Trump’s efforts at diplomacy in a meeting with Mexico’s leader, Enrique Peña Nieto, quickly backfired: Mr. Trump said that the two men did not discuss financing for the wall, one of his signature immigration issues, while Mr. Pena Nieto said later on Twitter that at the start of their meeting, ‘I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.'”

Mexico Trip a Big Win for Trump

August 31, 2016 · 5:57 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump met in Mexico with President Enrique Peña Nieto, who is being criticized by many Mexicans for holding the meeting. In a subdued joint appearance before the press in Mexico City, the two men described the meeting as warm, despite significant disagreements on issues of trade and immigration,” the New York Times reports.

Byron York: “Indeed, it was a big win — a very big win — for Trump. Going into a meeting with the potential for disaster — who knew how Pena Nieto would receive the world’s most controversial presidential candidate or what embarrassments might lie ahead? — Trump came out of the meeting looking very much like a potential President of the United States. Standing beside the Mexican leader in front of a green-gray granite wall reminiscent of the United Nations, Trump presented the picture of a statesman.”

Will Trump Get His Labor Day Reset?

August 31, 2016 · 4:21 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “Welcome to the most important day of Donald Trump’s campaign, at least going back to his convention. Twenty-four hours from now, Trump will (presumably) have a revised and revamped immigration policy. He will also have made a foreign trip to visit the government he’s tangled most with publicly. He’s seeking to look and act presidential, to signal that he’s listening, trying, and evolving.”

“At least in theory, it’s a sort of real-time display of the management approach he’s looking to bring to the nation’s highest office. It all comes at a moment of vulnerability for Hillary Clinton – see those new poll numbers that show trust in her eroding – that she’s chosen to spend almost exclusively with donors. If Trump needs a reset race before Labor Day, he’s doing what he can to get it. The master of optics and television imagery is getting some potentially valuable takeaways from the last day of August.”

Mexicans Angry at President for Inviting Trump

August 31, 2016 · 3:56 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The surprise announcement that Donald Trump would visit Mexico on Wednesday triggered a deluge of negative reactions here, with many Mexicans criticizing their president for inviting a U.S. candidate who has vowed to seal the border with a wall and deport millions of immigrants,” the Washington Post reports.

“The meeting poses a great risk for Peña Nieto, a former governor and the most unpopular Mexican president in decades. In the best of times, Mexicans feel conflicted about their neighbors to the north. In Trump, many Mexicans see the embodiment of their worst gringo fears: an overbearing and insulting politician happy to trod all over the poorer neighbor to get his way.”

Trump Still Hasn’t Placed Half of His $10 Million Ad Buy

August 31, 2016 · 3:53 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“At the beginning of this week, the Trump campaign announced – to great fanfare – that it was launching a $10 million ad buy from Aug. 30 through Sept. 6,” NBC News reports.

“The problem: Two days later, half of that ad buy still hasn’t been purchased.”

Is Trump Making a Mistake Going to Mexico?

August 31, 2016 · 9:13 am ET · Leave a Comment

Dan Drezner: “The question is why it is happening. As I’ll explain in a moment, there are so many ways this can go wrong that it boggles the mind. Remember Mitt Romney’s disastrous overseas trip in 2012? Scott Walker’s bumbling overseas trip in early 2015? Multiply that by a factor of 10 and that’s how badly this could go.”

Trump May Make Surprise Visit to Mexico

August 30, 2016 · 10:00 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is considering jetting to Mexico City on Wednesday for a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, just hours before he delivers a high-stakes speech in Arizona to clarify his views on immigration policy,” the Washington Post reports.

“Peña Nieto invited both Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to visit Mexico last Friday… Trump, sensing an opportunity, decided over the weekend to accept the invitation and push for a visit this week, according to the people familiar with the discussions.”

Bloomberg: “The trip is a go unless the Secret Service nixes it for safety reasons, a campaign aide said, though Trump has often changed plans without warning.”

Bachmann Says God Picked Trump

August 30, 2016 · 8:30 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) said that Donald Trump was “raised up” by God to win in the general election, The Hill reports.

Said Bachmann: “This is one thing I know from the Book of Daniel: the bottom line of the Book of Daniel is this: it teaches us that the most high God lifts up who He will and takes down who he will.”

“I actually supported Ted Cruz. I thought he was fabulous but I also see that at the end of the day God raised up, I believe Donald Trump who was going to be the nominee in this election. I don’t think God sits things out. He’s a sovereign God. Donald Trump became our nominee. I think it’s very likely that in the day that we live in, that Donald Trump is the only individual who could win in a General Election of the seventeen who ran. Maybe I’m wrong, I don’t know but I do know that the Bible is true and that Daniel teaches the most high God which is one of God’s names is the one who lifts up who he will and takes down who He will…”

Trump Suggests Kaepernick Find Another Country

August 29, 2016 · 5:23 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Donald Trump was not happy about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during a performance of the national anthem, BuzzFeed reports.

Said Trump: “I have followed it and I think it’s personally not a good thing. I think it’s a terrible thing, and you know, maybe he should find a country that works better for him, let him try, it’s not gonna happen.”

Robocall Urges Vote for David Duke and Donald Trump

A new robocall from former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke:

“We’re losing our country. Look at the Super Bowl salute to the Black Panther cop killers. It’s time to stand up and vote for Donald Trump for president and vote for me, David Duke for the U.S. Senate.”

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports the Republican Party of Louisiana “deferred voting on new rules Saturday that would make it more difficult for David Duke and other convicted felons to run as Republicans in elections held after November.”

Trump Campaign Manager Says He Won’t Deport All

August 28, 2016 · 1:23 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Donald Trump’s new campaign manager moved to clarify his new immigration policy, focusing on “being fair and humane” instead of deporting all undocumented immigrants, Politico reports.

Kellyanne Conway said the new plan is, “if you want to be here legally, you have to apply to be here legally. He is not talking about a deportation force, but he is talking about being fair and humane.”

Key takeaway: “That’s a clear break from Trump’s earlier position, which emphasized removing everyone who was in the country illegally, regardless of their individual circumstances.”

‘We Have a Psychopath Running for President’

August 28, 2016 · 11:45 am ET · Leave a Comment

Citing his “grandiose notion of self-worth, pathological lying, lack of empathy and remorse,” former Obama campaign chief David Plouffe called Donald Trump a “psychopath” in an interview on NBC News.

Said Plouffe: “I think the assessment was that Donald Trump would try and do some things to appeal to the middle of the electorate, to appeal to suburban college-educated women. He’s not. I mean, basically, we have a psychopath running for President. I mean, he meets the clinical definition, okay?”
