Christie Spends Holiday In State Park He Shuttered

July 2, 2017 at 4:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R) “joined his family at a state-owned retreat in Island Beach State Park on Saturday night, less than 24 hours after ordering the closure of all state parks and beaches because of the budget impasse in Trenton,” Politico reports.

“Christie, his wife, his children and their guests have the run of the 10-mile barrier island, where police are turning away all others visitors over the long holiday weekend.”

Said Christie: “That’s because the governor has a residence at Island Beach. Others don’t. It’s just the way it goes. Run for governor and then you can have the residence.”

Christie Adds Government Shutdown to His Legacy

July 1, 2017 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chris Christie is heading into his final six months as governor presiding over New Jersey’s biggest government crisis in more than a decade: A shutdown that will literally turn the lights out in Trenton,” Politico reports.

“New Jersey lawmakers failed to pass a budget by the annual deadline at midnight last night, and Christie promptly issued an order sparking the closure of government offices and services deemed non-essential. State parks and beaches will likely be closed this morning, just in time for the holiday, as will motor vehicle offices. Courts could be closed come Monday. Tens of thousands of state government employees will be furloughed.”

Christie Says He Doesn’t Care About 15% Approval

June 21, 2017 at 8:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. Chris Christie (R), the least popular governor in New Jersey history, says he doesn’t care what people think of him because he’s not running for office.

Said Christie: “The poll that matters is when people actually go in and vote. It would be nice if people actually polled voters or people who are likely to vote, because everybody else’s opinion, quite frankly, doesn’t matter about whether you like a public official or you don’t — unless you’re willing to move forward and exercise that preference at the polling places.”

Is North Carolina the Future of American Politics?

June 20, 2017 at 7:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jason Zengerle: “Welcome to North Carolina circa 2017, where all the passions and pathologies of American politics writ large are played out writ small — and with even more intensity. Ever since 2010, when Republicans seized control of the General Assembly for the first time in a century, and especially since 2012, when they took the governor’s mansion, the state’s politics have been haywire.”

“In just a few years, North Carolina Republicans have not just run quickly through the conservative policy checklist; they’ve tried to permanently skew the balance of power in the state in their favor, passing some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country and drawing some of the most egregiously gerrymandered congressional and state legislative districts in modern American politics (though their moves have repeatedly failed to pass muster with the courts).”

FBI Pick Billed Taxpayers $2.1 Million for Bridgegate

June 20, 2017 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s pick to be the next FBI director, Christopher Wray, billed New Jersey taxpayers more than $2.1 million in legal charges and expenses while representing Gov. Chris Christie as his personal attorney before during and after the Bridgegate trial,” WNYC reports.

“It is unclear what Wray and an extensive team from his firm, King & Spalding LLP, was doing for Christie — the bills provided to WNYC from the state Attorney General’s Office are heavily redacted, and Wray has never spoken publicly about his role.”

“The public did not even know that Wray was working for the governor until nearly two years into his work, when Christie’s spokesman said a cell phone that the governor used during Bridgegate was in Wray’s possession. Two former Christie aides who were indicted and ultimately convicted had unsuccessfully sought to subpoena the phone to use as part of their defense.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

June 19, 2017 at 4:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s a nightmare. Get away from my car if you see my car. I had to buy a car. Someone hit me in the first week… I am learning how to drive again. I hadn’t driven in four years. I’m a horrible driver. But I like the independence a lot.”

— Former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R), quoted by the Charlotte Observer, on having to drive himself again.

Northam Wins In Virginia

June 13, 2017 at 10:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, “backed by almost every Democratic elected official in the state, defeated the populist campaign of former congressman Tom Perriello, who had the support of Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, in a race that resembled the national party’s struggle over its future direction,” the Washington Post reports.

In the Republican race, Ed Gillespie “was hoping to fend off a stronger-than-expected challenge from rival Corey Stewart, whose strength was perhaps the biggest surprise of the night.”

Kansas Rolls Back Brownback’s Tax Cuts

June 7, 2017 at 9:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kansas lawmakers rolled back Gov. Sam Brownback’s (R) signature tax policy over his objections Tuesday night, “forcing into law tax increases to fix a budget shortfall and provide more money for schools,” the Wichita Eagle reports.

“The legislation ends the ‘march to zero’ income tax cuts that Brownback heralded for much of his time as governor. Income taxes will rise across the board but most tax rates will remain lower than they were before the 2012 tax cuts. The increases are expected to generate more than $1.2 billion for the state over the next two years.”

First Read: “Talk about a political sea change — the conservative state of Kansas raising taxes! — which up-ends a central GOP orthodoxy that cutting is always good and raising them is always bad. If you were looking for the breaking point for Republicans on taxes, we found it in Kansas.”

Nevada Just Passed a Public Health Insurance Option

June 6, 2017 at 9:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nevada, with little fanfare or notice, is inching toward a massive health insurance expansion — one that would give the state’s 2.8 million residents access to a public health insurance option,” Vox reports.

“The Nevada legislature passed a bill Friday that would allow anyone to buy into Medicaid, the public program that covers low-income Americans. It would be the first state to open the government-run program to all Nevada residents, regardless of their income or health status.”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval (R) did not respond to an inquiry about whether he would sign the bill or veto it.

She added: “It’s awful.”

Mississippi Lawmaker Calls for Lynching

May 22, 2017 at 10:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mississippi state Rep. Karl Oliver (R) said that Louisiana leaders should be lynched for removing Confederate monuments, the AP reports.

Said Oliver: “The destruction of these monuments, erected in the loving memory of our family and fellow Southern Americans, is both heinous and horrific. If the, and I use this term extremely loosely, ‘leadership’ of Louisiana wishes to, in a Nazi-ish fashion, burn books or destroy historical monuments of OUR HISTORY, they should be LYNCHED! Let it be known, I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening in our State.”

He later apologized: “I am very sorry. It is in no way, ever, an appropriate term.”

April 27, 2017 at 1:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Boston Globe: “On Tuesday, New Hampshire state Rep. Robert Fisher (R) was unmasked as an architect of a men’s rights Web page where he is accused of strategizing about how to seduce women in an age of feminism and denounced claims of rape as false.”

“On Wednesday, he rejected calls to resign, blamed fake news, and held himself out as a symbol of the downtrodden man.”

Said Fisher: “Here’s my message to the public: I am not disappearing. I will continue to stand strong for men’s rights and the rights of all.”
