CBO Says 14 Million Will Lose Health Insurance Next Year

March 13, 2017 at 4:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Congressional Budget Office has found that the Republican plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act will increase the number of Americans who are uninsured by 14 million next year and by 24 million over ten years.

CNBC: “The CBO’s analysis is an uncomfortable, but long-expected, reminder to Republican leaders, including President Donald Trump, about the potential political perils of getting rid of Obamacare. The ACA has been credited with driving down the nation’s uninsured rate to record low levels, from 18 percent of Americans in 2013 to 10.6 percent in the last quarter of 2016.”

Ex-Virginia Mayor Pleads Guilty in Meth-for-Sex Sting

March 13, 2017 at 3:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Fairfax, VA mayor Scott Silverthorne pleaded guilty to a felony drug distribution charge after local police arrested him in August for selling methamphetamine to undercover officers in exchange for group sex, USA Today reports.

“Silverthorne is to remain in custody until a June 9 sentencing hearing where he faces a maximum 40 years in prison… Family, friends and co-workers were visibly shaken in the court room, one saying ‘Oh my, God,’ after the judge issued the ruling.”

Trump Political Group Consumed by Power Struggle

March 13, 2017 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A political group launched by some of President Trump’s top campaign advisers to boost the White House in its biggest policy fights has been conspicuously absent as Trump begins to sell his agenda, hobbled by staffing delays, internal jockeying for control and a struggle to win the favor of big donors,” Politico reports.

“Now some are setting out to create a second competing nonprofit group, with the notable backing of the wealthy Mercer family, who are perhaps the most prominent donors in Trump’s orbit and who have long sought strict authority over their political spending. A third group could even be in the works.”

White House Tries to Walk Back Trump Wiretap Claims

March 13, 2017 at 2:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that President Trump “doesn’t really think” that Barack Obama “tapped his phone personally,” seeming to walk back Trump’s explosive and unsubstantiated claim that his predecessor ordered an illegal wiretap of Trump Tower, Politico reports.

Spicer claimed that the fact that Trump put quotation marks around the words “wire tapping” in one tweet was proof that he was not speaking literally.

Scientists Are Missing from Trump’s Government

March 13, 2017 at 2:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “has moved to fill just one of 46 key science and technology positions that help the government counter risks ranging from chemical and biological attacks to rising seas,” the Washington Post reports.

“The vacancies in the 46 Senate-confirmed posts range from the president’s science adviser, to the administrators of NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, to the chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.”

You Shouldn’t Spend Any Money Trump Promises

After NBC News reported there was no proof President Trump was donating his $400,000 annual salary to charity as he promised in a “60 Minutes” interview, press secretary Sean Spicer said at a briefing it was the president’s “intention” to do so at the end of the year.

King Refuses to Say Muslims Contribute Equally

March 13, 2017 at 12:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) refused to say on CNN that Muslim Americans are equal to German Americans in their usefulness to society — doubling-down on recent comments that white people have made greater contributions to Western civilization than other “sub-groups.”

Said King: “I’d say they’re all created in the image of God and they’re equal in his eyes. If they’re citizens of the United States, they’re equal in the eyes of the law. Individuals will contribute differently, not equally to this civilization and society. Certain groups of people will do more from a productive side than other groups of people will.”

Struggling Kushner Property Gets Big Chinese Deal

March 13, 2017 at 12:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A company owned by the family of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, stands to receive more than $400 million from a prominent Chinese company that is investing in the Kushners’ marquee Manhattan office tower at 666 Fifth Ave,” Bloomberg reports.

“The planned $4-billion transaction includes terms that some real estate experts consider unusually favorable for the Kushners. It provides them with both a sizable cash payout… for a property that has struggled financially and an equity stake in a new partnership.”

Mother Jones: Keeping with family tradition, Jared Kushner won’t cut his business ties.

Liberal TV Shows Rise In Viewership

March 13, 2017 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Left-leaning MSNBC, after flailing at the end of the Obama years, has edged CNN in prime time. Stephen Colbert’s openly anti-Trump ‘Late Show’ is beating Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight’ for the first time. Bill Maher’s HBO flock has grown nearly 50 percent since last year’s presidential primaries, and ‘The Daily Show’ has registered its best ratings since Jon Stewart left in 2015.”

Quote of the Day

March 13, 2017 at 12:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He will not have the votes. Everybody is being nice to everybody because they want us to vote for this, but we’re not going to vote for it.”

— Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), discussing Speaker Paul Ryan’s plan to replace Obamacare on Face the Nation.

Punting Wiretap Investigation to Congress May Backfire

March 13, 2017 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “It’s been a week since the Trump White House punted to Congress rather than provide evidence to back up what President Trump alleged about President Obama’s ordering his phones tapped. Congress is now doing what the president said he wanted done, and the noise on that front will only get louder. Letters are flying demanding evidence from federal agencies, with a public hearing on Russia ties coming next week.”

“It’s only a matter of time before FBI Director James Comey is put on the record on Capitol Hill. GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona is making clear the choices ahead for the president: ‘Either retract or to provide the information that the American people deserve,’ he told CNN. The president may be counting on other news to crowd out his unsubstantiated allegation, but putting this on Congress may actually ensure it doesn’t disappear.”

King Blasted for ‘Our Civilization’ Comments

March 13, 2017 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who last July said white Christians have contributed more to Western civilization than any other “subgroup,” found himself again the subject of criticism, this time for saying that Muslim children are preventing “our civilization” from being restored, the Des Moines Register reports.

King, who was retweeting a message endorsing Geert Wilders, a far-right candidate for Dutch prime minister, said Wilders “understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

Republicans Pose Challenge to Trump Trade Agenda

March 13, 2017 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican lawmakers are showing increasing resistance to President Trump’s trade agenda, worried that his plans could hurt exports from their states and undermine longstanding U.S. alliances,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The concerns indicate that the biggest threat to Mr. Trump’s trade policy—which emphasizes new bilateral deals and a tougher stance against countries blamed for violating trade rules—is coming from his own party. The opposition from Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, stands to complicate Mr. Trump’s efforts to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement, or Nafta, and tackle alleged trade violations in China.”

Why the CBO Score Is a Big Deal

As early as today, the Congressional Budget Office could release it’s “score” on the GOP health care bill by projecting how much it will cost and how many (or few) it will cover.

Scottish Leader Calls for New Referendum

March 13, 2017 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister Of Scotland has announced that she will start proceedings for a second Scottish referendum on independence,” CNBC reports.

“In a speech in Edinburgh, the First Minister said that the language of partnership from the United Kingdom had ‘gone completely’ in relation to Scotland’s view on Brexit… Scotland voted 62% to 38% to remain in Europe, but as it currently exists as part of the United Kingdom would be forced to leave the European Union.”

Conway Suggests Even Wider Surveillance of Trump

March 13, 2017 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kellyanne Conway suggested to the Bergen County Record that the “surveillance” of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign may be broader than the unsubstantiated wiretaps he claimed.

Said Conway: “What I can say is there are many ways to surveil each other. You can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets — any number of ways.”

Conway went on to say that the monitoring could be done with “microwaves that turn into cameras,” adding: “We know this is a fact of modern life.”

Trump Pays Close Attention to White House Briefings

March 13, 2017 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Yorker: “President Trump, by most accounts, is rarely too busy to watch TV, especially when he is the topic. ‘Look at his daily schedule, and you’ll notice how few events are held between 1 and 2 p.m.,’ a radio correspondent told me. This is the hour during which Spicer almost always conducts his briefings…”

“Another correspondent pointed out how often press aides deliver notes to Spicer while he’s at the lectern, and how obediently Spicer seems to respond to the notes’ directives, cutting a response short or abruptly ending a briefing. The reigning theory is that the notes are transcribed messages from the President, watching live from elsewhere in the building.”

CBO Score for Health Care Bill Coming This Week

March 13, 2017 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: The Congressional Budget Office is set to release its ‘score’ — the fiscal and practical impact — of the Republican health-care bill today or tomorrow and it’s not expected to be pretty. The White House has been bashing the CBO, saying it frequently misses the mark, but it will be critical data for lawmakers on Capitol Hill as they consider how to vote. A budget-busting number could thwart the bill’s chances, or at least prolong this process.”

The Hill: “As the healthcare world anticipates the cost estimate of the controversial legislation by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of the Actuary may also be putting its own price tag on the measure. The CBO is Congress’s official scorekeeper, but if CMS puts out a similar analysis, it could help shield the non-partisan CBO from criticism.”
