House oversight committee chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) said that if a memo FBI Director James Comey wrote detailing President Trump’s request to end an investigation exists, then his committee is willing to issue subpoenas to get it, CNN reports.

What Just Happened?
White House Officials Are Increasingly Exasperated
A senior official in the Trump administration, who previously worked on the president’s campaign, offered a candid and brief assessment of the fallout of the president’s possible interference in an FBI investigation to the Daily Beast: “I don’t see how Trump isn’t completely fucked.”
Said another: “I feel like running down the hallway with a fire extinguisher.”
Trump’s Disclosure Puts Israeli Spy’s Life at Risk
“The life of a spy placed by Israel inside ISIS is at risk tonight, according to current and former U.S. officials, after President Trump reportedly disclosed classified information in a meeting with Russian officials last week,” ABC News reports.
“The spy provided intelligence involving an active ISIS plot to bring down a passenger jet en route to the United States, with a bomb hidden in a laptop that U.S. officials believe can get through airport screening machines undetected. The information was reliable enough that the U.S. is considering a ban on laptops on all flights from Europe to the United States.”
Comey Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation
President Trump asked the FBI director James Comey “to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February,” the New York Times reports.
Said Trump, according to the memo: “I hope you can let this go.”
“The existence of Mr. Trump’s request is the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and FBI investigation into links between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia.”
Republicans Desperately Want Trump to Work Out
Dan Balz: “As President Trump lurches from one crisis to another, Republicans have chosen a strategy of compartmentalization over confrontation. It is a survival mechanism, one that comes with no guarantee of ultimate success but with significant risks attached.”
“With each controversy, Republicans try to look away, in the hope that the storm around the White House will pass and some sense of calm and normalcy will emerge. Events of the past eight days — the firing of James Comey as FBI director and now the report that the president shared highly classified information from a U.S. ally with the Russians — underscore just how difficult it has become to maintain that posture.”
“Republicans desperately want this relationship to work. They have a big policy agenda that they want to see turned into law. They want to move on health care and taxes, government regulations and budget priorities. They waited through the last years of the previous administration for the opportunity to hold all the levers of power.”
Another Bonus Quote of the Day
“We need to have immediate classified briefings on what occurred at this meeting so that Congress can at least know as much as Russian leaders.”
— Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA), in a statement., on President Trump’s disclosure of classified information to the Russian foreign minister.
Trump Disclosure to Russia Is Israel’s ‘Worst Fears’
Two Israeli intelligence officials confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Israel had shared specific intelligence with the U.S. regarding ISIS plots to smuggle explosive laptops onto planes.
The revelation that Trump had shared that intelligence with Russian officials was Israel’s “worst fears confirmed,” said one of the intelligence officers.
Said one: “We have an arrangement with America which is unique to the world of intelligence sharing. We do not have this relationship with any other country… To know that this intelligence is shared with others, without our prior knowledge? That is, for us, our worst fears confirmed.”
Trump Lashes Out at White House Staff
New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s appetite for chaos, coupled with his disregard for the self-protective conventions of the presidency, have left his staff confused and squabbling. And his own mood, according to two advisers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, has become sour and dark, turning against most of his aides — even his son-in-law, Jared Kushner — and describing them in a fury as ‘incompetent.'”
“Even before the latest bombshell dropped, reports swirled in the White House that the president was about to embark on a major shake-up… Mr. Trump, who still openly laments having to dismiss his first national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, has groused that General McMaster talks too much in meetings, and the president has referred to him as ‘a pain.'”
GOP Lawmaker Under Ethics Investigation
“Congressional ethics investigators are probing Rep. Chris Collins’ (R-NY) role in attracting investors to an Australian biotech company,” the Buffalo News reports.
“They are looking into any potential role played by Collins, the firm’s largest shareholder, in persuading investors to buy stock in the company.”
Earlier this year reporters overheard Collins in a cellphone conversation just off the House floor, bragging about “how many millionaires I’ve made in Buffalo the past few months.”
Trump Passed Israeli Intelligence to Russians
The highly classified intelligence that President Trump disclosed in a meeting last week with Russian officials at the White House was provided by Israel, the New York Times reports.
“The revelation adds a potential diplomatic complication to the episode. Israel is one of the United States’ most important allies and a major intelligence collector in the Middle East. The revelation that Mr. Trump boasted about some of Israel’s most sensitive information to the Russians could damage the relationship between the two countries. It also raises the possibility that the information could be passed to Iran, Russia’s close ally and Israel’s main threat in the Middle East.”
Stone and Jones Warn of Attempt to Remove Trump
Roger Stone and Alex Jones made a 15-minute video in which they warn that there will be a bipartisan move to remove President Trump from office under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution claiming that he is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Guilfoyle Says She Might Become Trump’s Press Secretary
Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle tells the San Jose Mercury News that she is in conversations with the Trump administration about becoming White House press secretary.
Said Guilfoyle: “I’m a patriot, and it would be an honor to serve the country. I think it’d be a fascinating job, it’s a challenging job, and you need someone really determined and focused, a great communicator in there with deep knowledge to be able to handle that position.”
She added: “Sean Spicer is a very nice man and a patriot; he’s dedicated himself to this public service. Very tough position he’s in — I wish him the best, and I know he puts a lot of effort into it.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day
“Can we have a crisis-free day? That’s all I’m asking.”
— Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), quoted by CNN.
White House Staff Hid When News Broke
Daily Beast: “Communications staff and senior staffers at the White House were literally ‘hiding in offices,’ according to a senior Trump aide, as a gaggle of White House press stormed White House hallways just after the Washington Post story broke on Monday evening.”
A Pattern of Poor Judgment
James Hohmann: “Let’s step back for a second and ponder why Trump thought it was a good idea to give an audience to two leaders from an adversary of the United States, who the intelligence agencies believe meddled in last year’s presidential election. The FBI continues to probe possible connections between Trump associates and the Russian government. So are multiple congressional committees. Adding insult to injury, Trump scheduled this meeting for the morning after he axed Comey.”
“Not only that, Trump welcomed Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak — a key figure in the earlier Russia controversies — to the meeting. Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, had to resign because of fallout from his contacts with Kislyak and misleading statements about what he’d said. Attorney General Jeff Sessions had to recuse himself from matters related to the FBI’s Russia investigation after it emerged he met and spoke with Kislyak, despite denying any contact with Russian officials while under oath during his confirmation hearing. Any conventional president would avoid Kislyak like the plague. Trump welcomed him with open arms.”
Garland Has No Interest In Being FBI Director
Judge Merrick Garland, whose nomination to the Supreme Court by President Obama was blocked by Senate Republicans, has told associated he has no interest in being the new FBI director, the Washington Post reports.
“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been among those saying Garland should be considered to replace fired FBI director James B. Comey.”
Democrats Open Big Lead on Generic Ballot
A new Public Policy Polling survey shows Democrats now have a 49% to 38% lead overall on the generic congressional ballot.
“Even more notable though is that among voters who say they’re ‘very excited’ to turn out in the 2018 election, the Democratic lead balloons to 27 points at 61% to 34%. The outcome of lower turnout midterm elections often hinges on which side is more engaged, and Democrats have the clear advantage at this point on that front — 63% of their voters say they’re ‘very excited’ about voting in next year’s election, compared to only 52% of Republicans who say the same.”
Also of note: Only 25% of voters support the GOP health care bill, while 52% are opposed.
