Trump Aide Leaked Defense Secretary’s Phone Number

May 15, 2017 · 4:54 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rachel Manteuffel: “A story about President Trump’s bodyguard Keith Schiller… was accompanied by a photograph of the two of them walking on White House grounds. The bodyguard was holding a stack of papers, and, according to the caller, on the outside of those papers was a yellow sticky note that said ‘Jim, Mad Dog, Mattis’ and had a phone number.”

“This of course sounds impossible. Way more care than that is taken around the president, right? The Secret Service is good at secrecy, generally. So I thanked the guy for the call and dubiously pulled up the photo in question. With the monitor turned 90 degrees and the photo blown up, indeed, I could make out a number and what might be “Jim, Mad Dog, Mattis,” if you have better eyesight than mine even when I squint.”

“I called. I got the voice mail. It was him.”

Democrats Spend Big on Online Ads

May 15, 2017 · 3:48 pm ET · Leave a Comment

HuffPost: “This is a golden age of Democratic online organizing. According to experts, the wave of anti-Donald Trump sentiment may represent a rare opportunity for lawmakers to shift away from a reliance on big-money donors and toward a system popularized by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) during his presidential run: small-dollar giving that begets sustained forms of activism.”

“Campaign fundraisers say the deluge of money currently coming in online is unlike anything the party has ever seen in the first quarter following a presidential election. More than one operative described investments in digital advertising as ‘free money,’ and as a chance for someone with an eye on the White House to build a foundation for that campaign.”

White House Won’t Say If Tapes Exist

May 15, 2017 · 3:12 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The White House refused to say Monday whether it would comply with congressional requests to produce possible recordings of conversations between President Trump and White House visitors,” The Hill reports.

Facing repeated questions from multiple news outlets, White House press secretary Sean Spicer went back to the same line: “The president has made it clear what his position is.”

“Spicer’s response heightened a standoff between the executive and legislative branches that could complicate the process to replace Comey.”

Nervous Trump Aides Hope for a Reboot

May 15, 2017 · 2:48 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Rattled by President Donald Trump’s increasing frustration with the staff guidance he’s getting and by the administration’s unforced errors, White House officials are desperately hoping the president’s first foreign trip beginning on Friday offers a chance to reboot what’s become a damaging narrative,” NBC News reports.

“Preparations for the trip come as Trump’s inner circle appears to be shrinking, fueling paranoia inside the West Wing among a fatigued staff battered by a drumbeat of reports suggesting some senior staffers are on the chopping block.”

“While some kind of shake-up appears nearly inevitable at this point, insiders caution it doesn’t seem imminent — at least, not right now.”

Democratic Lawmaker Says Trump Must Be Impeached

May 15, 2017 · 2:45 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) called for the impeachment of President Trump, “marking the most explicit call yet by a member of Congress to start the process of ousting the president,” BuzzFeed reports.

“Green, in a statement, cited Trump’s ‘obstruction’ in the investigation into whether his campaign coordinated with Russia during the 2016 election. Green pointed specifically to Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey last week, as well as Trump’s tweet stating that Comey ‘better hope that there are no tapes of our conversations’ and that Trump ‘acknowledged he considered the investigation when he fired’ Comey.”

U.S. Accuses Syria of Mass Murders

May 15, 2017 · 1:28 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration accused the Syrian government of operating a crematorium to cover up what U.S. officials called ‘mass murders’ at the notorious Saydnaya prison outside Damascus,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The U.S. estimates the Syrian government is hanging as many as 50 detainees per day at the prison and burning some of the remains afterwards… The U.S. released several declassified satellite photos it says reveal the existence of the crematorium near the main prison.”

Republicans See Strong Potential Challengers to Trump

May 15, 2017 · 1:25 pm ET · Leave a Comment

McClatchy: “The early Democratic jockeying to take on President Donald Trump has not gone unnoticed on the other side of the aisle — and Republicans concede there are quite a few potentially formidable contenders.”

“In interviews with two dozen GOP operatives, strategists and officials around the country, Republicans placed the most credible Democratic candidates into categories: the rising congressional stars (Kamala Harris) and the pure political outsiders (Mark Cuban), the fiery progressives (Elizabeth Warren) and the pragmatic moderates (John Hickenlooper).”

‘Morning Joe’ Hosts Claim Conway Doesn’t Like Trump

May 15, 2017 · 11:53 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough claimed that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway felt “so dirty” supporting President Trump on their show that she once said she needed to “take a shower,” the Washington Examiner reports.

Said Brzezinski: “She would shill for Trump in extensive fashion and then she would get off the air, the camera would be turned off, the microphone would be taken off and she would say ‘Blech, I need to take a shower,’ because she disliked her candidate so much.”

Scarborough claimed Conway once said, “I don’t believe in this guy. He’s just my client. It’s just a paycheck… I’m just doing this for the money.”

Support for Gay Marriage Hits New High

May 15, 2017 · 11:24 am ET · Leave a Comment

A new Gallup poll finds 64% of U.S. adults say same-sex marriages should be recognized by the law as valid.

“Although not meaningfully different from the 61% last year, this is the highest percentage to date and continues the generally steady rise since Gallup’s trend began in 1996.”

NATO Tries to Trump-Proof President’s First Visit

May 15, 2017 · 11:22 am ET · Leave a Comment

Foreign Policy: “NATO is scrambling to tailor its upcoming meeting to avoid taxing President Donald Trump’s notoriously short attention span. The alliance is telling heads of state to limit talks to 2 to 4 minutes at a time during the discussion, several sources inside NATO and former senior U.S. officials tell FP. And the alliance scrapped plans to publish the traditional full post-meeting statement meant to crystallize NATO’s latest strategic stance.”

“On May 25, NATO will host the heads of state of all 28 member countries in what will be Trump’s first face-to-face summit with an alliance he bashed repeatedly while running for president. NATO traditionally organizes a meeting within the first few months of a new U.S. president’s term, but Trump has the alliance more on edge than any previous newcomer, forcing organizers to look for ways to make the staid affair more engaging.”

Macron Chooses Prime Minister from Rival Party

May 15, 2017 · 10:54 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Newly-inaugurated French President Emmanuel Macron appointed a conservative prime minister in a move to broaden his political appeal and weaken his opponents before legislative elections in June,” Reuters reports.

“It is the first time in modern French political history that a president has appointed a prime minister from outside his camp without being forced to by a defeat in parliamentary elections. Macron’s presidential win itself was a seismic shift in a political landscape dominated for decades by the two main left-wing and right-wing parties.”

When a Cover-Up Isn’t Secret, Did It Happen?

President Richard Nixon was forced out of office for a crime — the break-in to the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex — and we still don’t know if he actually ordered it. We don’t even know why it happened or what exactly the burglars were trying to find.

Supreme Court Deals Blow to Voter ID Law

May 15, 2017 · 10:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear North Carolina’s appeal of a court ruling that found its legislature intended to discriminate against minorities in enacting one of the toughest voter ID laws in the nation, NBC News reports.

Rick Hasen: “These days at the Supreme Court, getting the Court not to hear a voting case is a significant victory. While the Court could well issue an adverse decision in the future, the 4th Circuit opinion stays on the books for now, and it has already been relied upon to hold other strict voting laws illegal.”

Midterm Alarm Bells Going Off for Republicans

May 15, 2017 · 9:06 am ET · Leave a Comment

First Read: “Trump’s 39% job rating is a screaming alarm bell for the Republican Party when you think about the midterms, which are still more than 500 days away. To put Trump’s 39% into perspective, George W. Bush didn’t reach that level in the NBC/WSJ poll until October 2005, so after the Social Security debacle, after the Iraq war turned south, and after Hurricane Katrina. And the GOP lost the House and Senate the following year. And Barack Obama NEVER reached 39% in our poll — his lowest approval rating was 40% in September 2014, right before Democrats lost the Senate (after losing the House in 2010).”

Lawmaker Targeted Activist in Letter to Her Employer

Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) “wrote a fundraising letter in March to the board member of a local bank, warning him that a member of an activist group opposing the Republican worked at his bank,” WNYC reports.

“The employee was questioned and criticized for her involvement in NJ 11th for Change, a group that formed after the election of Donald Trump and has been pressuring Frelinghuysen to meet with constituents in his district and oppose the Trump agenda… She says the pressure she received for her political involvement was one of several reasons she decided to leave.”

Trump’s Legislative Agenda Is Essentially Dead This Year

Despite Republicans holding control of both houses of Congress, President Trump’s only significant legislative “victory” is the GOP health care bill, which barely passed the House. But it’s so unpopular the Senate rejected it entirely and is starting over.

Why Trump Worried About Picking Callista Gingrich

May 15, 2017 · 7:28 am ET · Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “About six weeks ago, the President was kibitzing about the Vatican ambassador role. Trump told our source he was reluctant to send Callista to the Vatican because he likes seeing her husband Newt defending him on TV. Our source told the President they were sure satellite hook-ups could be arranged for Newt at the Holy See.”

How Trump Gets His Fake News

May 15, 2017 · 7:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

Politico: “White House chief of staff Reince Priebus issued a stern warning at a recent senior staff meeting: Quit trying to secretly slip stuff to President Trump. Just days earlier, K.T. McFarland, the deputy national security adviser, had given Trump a printout of two Time magazine covers. One, supposedly from the 1970s, warned of a coming ice age; the other, from 2008, about surviving global warming, according to four White House officials familiar with the matter.”

“Trump quickly got lathered up about the media’s hypocrisy. But there was a problem. The 1970s cover was fake, part of an Internet hoax that’s circulated for years. Staff chased down the truth and intervened before Trump tweeted or talked publicly about it. The episode illustrates the impossible mission of managing a White House led by an impetuous president who has resisted structure and strictures his entire adult life.”
